Federal Judges are appointed for life, and can acquire Secret Service protection without too much difficulty.
"When you intend to die, you can do almost anything"; I read that in some comic book, but it has a lot of truth in it.. Remember Hitler's Grandmother was Jewish, so self-loathing and rise to power aren't exclusive.
Maybe because the way Windows is used on a nuclear sub (Non-networked, no USB drives, et cetera) leave it pretty much 'unhackable' from somebody who doesn't already have access to that machine?
While Microsoft continues to trumpet the success of its NT operating system over Unix-based systems, the US Navy is having second thoughts about putting NT at the helm. A system failure on the USS Yorktown last September temporarily paralyzed the cruiser, leaving it stalled in port for the remainder of a weekend.
"For about two-and-a-half hours, the ship was what we call 'dead in the water,'" said Commander John Singley of the Atlantic Fleet Surface Force....
The warship was testing its new Smart Ship system, which uses off-the-shelf PCs to automate tasks that sailors have traditionally done themselves. "The Navy started the Smart Ship program with three essential goals in mind: improve combat readiness, reduce crew workload and operating costs, and to do it safely," said Singley. The source of the problem on the Yorktown was that bad data was fed into an application running on one of the 16 computers on the LAN. The data contained a zero where it shouldn't have, and when the software attempted to divide by zero, a buffer overrun occurred -- crashing the entire network and causing the ship to lose control of its propulsion system. Sunk by Windows NT
Seems to me that an Ageis class cruiser would compare favorably to a Nuclear Attack sub security wise
Seriously, you could use an unpatched Windows XP box with all the remote services running and no firewall, and it STILL DOESN'T MATTER SINCE THERE'S NO VECTOR ONTO THE MACHINE.
They use Windows, iirc, because that's where the development tools are. And, since security in this application is basically all physical anyway... why not?
The Smart Ship program is still in development, and officials said glitches are to be expected, but in this case the problem appeared to be more political than technical. Using Microsoft's Windows NT operating system in such a critical environment, some engineers said, was a bad move.
"The simple root of the problem on Yorktown was that politics were played in the assigning of the contract -- there was not a discussion of engineers, it was just a very small group of people pitching for it," said an engineer close to the project, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Didn't see anything about development tools mentioned here.
I use the stuff at work, it's available in various industrial, technical and even in food grades and not particularly expensive. It's also the primary ingredient in Slime a substance without which the Nickelodeon network could not exist.
If Chernobyl was a car, the brakes wouldn't work unless the accelerator was pressed to the floor and the on-board fire extinguisher would use propane as the propellant.
I'm running Arch Linux and Vista dual-boat and I'm in LUA mode in Vista; I don't have any problems with app's auto-updating on Vista. The apps check for updates, asks for the admin password and sometimes I have to click the next button a couple times. Running as Admin get real noisey it's do you want to do this, do you really want to do this, are you sure you really want to do this; then you get to click the next button a couple times. I think using Linux first is a benefit when use Vista, it behaves like I expect. The hard-core windosers have fits with the stuff I think "it's about time they did it right" stuff like limited user accounts security.
I'm just glad you weren't among the 100,105,780 people who have died from Malaria since since Carson's book was published and DDT was virtually banned and declaired a âoepotential human carcinogenâ without evidence by William Ruckelshaus
In the past we've made some assumptions that would make our problem set workable but knew some of them would be later shown to be wrong; for example to sequence the human genome we took thousands of cells, extract the DNA and sequenced it. Where the data was noisy we assumed it was experimental error rather than genomic differences yet we knew the assumption was unsupported. Right now we are extracting DNA form hundreds of cells such as cancerous and non-cancerous and sequencing them and seeing differences between the two because our techniques and equipment is a lot better and faster. One day we may be able to sequence individual cells and see genomic differences at a finer level. It's not lazyness, it's the limitations of our techniques and equipmemt.
[paul@localhost ~]$ uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.30-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jul 4 11:13:08 UTC 2009 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux Well Arch Linux considers it stable, but I think it went into stable from testing yesterday LOL. Arch stays more leading and even bleeding edge than other distro's.
Ground is just a reference voltage, just bond it to the neutral wire at the generator; a laptop doesn't have a ground when it's unplugged from the charger. Sure you want a ground that's bonded to a ground stake with high-voltages like CRT monitors, but its unnecessary on a computer running on 5 and 12 volts.
But if the image is recognizable even (as in your example) as one of one or two similar photos, then I think there is an argument to be made that the use is infringing.
I don't find the alleged original photograph and the posterized image to be recognizable, the angle of Obama's head is different in both the angle to the right and in elevation, the ears on the poster are smaller and less Opie looking. Even the pro's had a difficult time figuring out which photo might have been used, and the impression I got is even Fairey isn't sure.
Boy you just can make this shit up, a guy named Fairey turns a picture of a presidential candidate into a cheap copy of a Stalin poster and they use it in his campain!
Windows inertia keeping people from using a proper operating system.
Once I can boot into a new Linux install and have my four monitors come up without having to manually edit files and search forums for answers....then you can call Linux a proper operating system.

Basicaly what happens is the keyboard induces current in the ground line
Since keyboards and mice signals are in the 1 to 20 kHz range, a filter can isolate that range for listening, they say.
so the answer is to filter out the 1-20KHz range to reduce the level of ground loop feedback and insert some pink noise at the 1-20Hz range into the ground to further bury the signal into the noise.
even usb uses a GND and the D+/D- (data wires) aren't isolated from the GND. Plus most GND is typically a common ground (through the chassis and to the ground of the power cable).
and if you consider the fact that this was done by unfunded, tiny group in just a week....makes ya wonder what the NSA or any other BIGGER and better funded group would have up their sleeves.
looks like I have to come up with a random noise generator to hook up to the ground of my power outlets.
Now you know why the NSA and the other spooky types keep their classified equipment running off a generator powered by an electrical motor rather than connecting directly to the power grid. When you absolutely have to keep something secret nothing beats Faraday cages, air-gaps and mechanical isolation from the power grid.
The impression I got is their problem wasn't so much that they were malignant racists, or that they had published the material as much as it was that they distributed it to the unwilling, such as sliding Holocaust Denial materials in between synagogue doors
These people did their duty and saved the lives of many of their countrymen. But their work was not done at great peril to themselves. It was not under a hail of cannon fire and bullets that they worked at Bletchley Park. Their work is appreciated, but it cannot be more appreciated than the lives of soldiers who gave much much more in the defense of their countrymen.
There is nothing wrong with not giving your life for your country while giving the other bastard every opportunity to give his for his.
The general idea is make a lot of electricity from wind, which means the power plants aren't using as much natural gas and run the cars on CNG. CNG is a lot cleaner burning than petroleum fuels, and domestically produced. Eventually people get used to the idea of burning gaseous fuel in the vehicles and will not wig-out so much when we convert to hydrogen.
The tires wear out in about 50 minutes at top speed, fuel lasts for 12 minutes and there are only a few places on the planet with enough roll-out to get up to it.
Wow you were lucky, I was instructed to not even open half of the "required" textbooks in most classes and of course none of the books were available as used. Soon we got into the habit of showing up for the first class without books and asking the instructor which one were actually going to be used or useful.

My uncle used to serve on a US Navy sub-chaser, he told me after they had sailed aways the Russians would surface and trade goodies with them.
You have to have screens on them to keep the fish out.

Highest spec's, lowest bidder, we always get the worst of the best!
America can't do a damn thing about it without causing Russia to intervene for the other side.
