It's funny that you should mention In Flames -- they're my second favorite band:). And the only reason they're not first is because I had give that slot to Nevermore for their masterpiece "Dreaming Neon Black". (There may be some mp3s/oggs on their website, but I can't get it to load at the moment.)
Dark Tranquility is one of my favorite bands -- I haven't bought Damage Done yet, but I still think Projector is amazing:). Is Machinae Supremacy similar? (Then again, I see that they also offer MP3 and even Ogg files on their website, so it may just be a matter of listening for myself.)
You might have thought Iron Maiden was washed up long ago, but that's quite contrary to the truth. I've gotten my filthy hands on their new Dance of Death release a bit early, and I can say that these guys are firing on all cylinders.
How does Dance of Death compare to their Brave New World
album? I really liked that one, and I was so pleased when Bruce came back to the band. (For those not aware, Bruce Dickinson was Iron Maiden's original singer; he left for a new solo albums, and eventually came back to the band.)
I also see that you can view the Wildest Dreams video on Iron Maiden's site (from Dance of Death).
You need an Firebird extension -- Tab Browser Extension -- which sometimes works on its own, and sometimes needs help from the registry (this is a win32 problem only, AFAIK).
Do you recall what those registry changes might be? I checked the Tab Browser Extension page, but I didn't see mention of them there. And, I do hope that it's not the "supportDDEExec false trick", since that apparently no longer works;).
All right, so that looks like it might solve the open-in-a-new-tab bit:). As for inline autocomplete, I can't speak for previous builds, but I didn't see it in the nightly build that I tried last night.
I'm trying to switch over from Mozilla to Firebird and Thunderbird, but I've run into a few niggles. On the Thunderbird side, for instance, is there any way to open links in a new Firebird tab? In Mozilla's MailNews, I like being able to middle-click to open URLs in a new browser tab:).
And, on the Firebird side, is there a way to turn on inline-autocomplete for the URL bar? (If you're not familiar with inline-autocomplete, it's when the top-match dynamically appears in the URL bar as you type.)
Other than that, I'm also looking for a DOM Inspector extension for Firebird as well. Yeah, there are some one-off XPIs to get the DOM Inspector in Firebird, but I'm concerned that they may not be actively developed. For instance, if the Firebird extensions API changes, I'm not sure if someone would step up to release a new DOM Inspector XPI:-/.
The Nex IIe from Frontier Labs is a real prodcut, and it supports both CompactFlash Type I & II (such as IBM's Microdrive). Then again, it doesn't support Ogg (yet?), so that's why I'm not buying one;).
My online CD retailer of choice these days is DeepDiscountCD. Their prices are very reasonable and, best of all, shipping is free -- that alone often puts them $2-3 cheaper than their competitors. (They also have a sister-site, DeepDiscountDVD, which also has free shipping.)
A lot of people, myself included, would prefer to buy our music legitimatly.
... Even though you know artists are better off if you don't?
That reminds me of the boss who, in declining to give an employee a raise, says "Well, most of it would have been taken up by taxes anyway."
Of course, that's a poor excuse for declining a raise -- the employee would have seen some increase, after all. By the same token, even if artists aren't making as much as the labels per-CD, they're still making some amount.
Basically the Canadian company Transgaming decided, that their version of Wine, WineX, is good not only for running games, but for other Windows programs too.
Why is it that some authors, decide to insert commas all over, the place?;) (admittedly, some of those commas are necessary, but not all of them)
I realize that this is slightly off-topic, but it's still on the subject of Linux hardware support:). My HP 5L is on its last legs and I'm in the market for a new printer (nah, it's not he separator pad this time).
I've found LinuxPrinting.org and while it's a useful resource, it doesn't include all the printers I'm considering. For instance, while the HP section seems to be completely current, the Samsung section is missing a few.
I'm in the market for a 1200dpi b/w laser printer and some of the printers I'm considering at the moment are the LaserJet 1200se (or LaserJet 1300) from HP and the ML-1750 (or ML-1651) from Samsung. Of course, neither the ML-1750 nor the ML-1651 are listed on LinuxPrinting.org's Samsung page:-/.
Here's my rationale for each. The HP LaserJet 1200se is HP's cheapest laser that can do 1200dpi -- but I get the impression that it may have been discontinued and the 1300 may be easier to actually find. And, the ML-1750 is Samsung's cheapest 1200dpi laser, but it only gets "1200x600dpi", which I don't know whether that means it's has "real" 1200dpi support or not:-/. And, the ML-1651 is a bit more expensive than the ML-1750 but supports 1200x1200dpi.
Fresco, which got renamed to Berlin, which got renamed to Fresco, seems mostly delayed due to a schizophrenic attack.
Schizophrenia is a disorder characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and catatonic behavior. I'm guessing that's not what you had in mind?
Or, check it out at BestBookBuys (think of it as PriceGrabber/PriceWatch for books). There, you can see that Buy.com has an even better price ($21.27 shipped).
Power metal with death metal vocals: that was a neat gimmick.
Well, it's not so much a gimmick as a metal subgenre. Many fans of it know it as "melodic dealth metal" and In Flames in particular has the "Gothenburg Sound" (that's the city in Sweden where an inordinate number of melodic death metal bands originate). Just try a Google search for Gothenburg Sound and you'll find many more bands of the genre.
I'm also a big fan of melodic death metal -- in fact, In Flames is my second-favorite band (Nevermore is first, if only because of their brilliant work with Dreaming Neon Black). As I'm always looking for other artists similar to In Flames, what are some other bands that you enjoy?
Get catastrophic health insurance. I'm paying about $75/month for a $2,000/year deductable ($500/year deductable for prescriptions).
Do you have more info on this? I'm currently working as a freelancer and those rates sound reasonable. I currently go through eHealthInsurance (about $87/month w/ $500 deductible) but that's short-term health insurance, so I have to repply every 6 months.
For what it's worth, if you're unemployed and looking for some temporary health insurance just for the peace of mind, I've been pleased with eHealthInsurance. The name may be silly, but it's professionally done and you can be insured the same day you sign up (which is all online).
When you say "play everything", do you mean DVD-V/DVD-A/SACD/CD/MP3? Or, are you perhaps referring to regions or other meanings of "play everything"?
In any case, if I'm understanding your goals correctly, I don't believe such a beast exists. In particular, items (b) (region free / Macrovision free through software) and (c) (reasonably high quality) may be mutually exlusive on their own since the only hardware vendors daring enough to include those types of mods in software are probably the same ones that end up with low quality products (like Apex).
I've been shopping around for a new laser printer for my home PC and... what does "600x1200" mean, anyway? I understand 600 dpi and 1200 dpi but, effectively, what does 600x1200 give me?
To some of us following the home theater scene, the Bravo D1 may be old news;), but I can understand that it may not be common knowledge. In any case, the Home Theater Forum is a great resource in general and it has a couplethreads on this player as well. Of note from that second link is that the Bravo is not the only DVI player on the market:
The only DVI-out DVD players on the market at the moment are the V Inc. Bravo D1, the Samsung 931, and the Momitsu DV-880. If you will not be using the DVI-out on these players, all of them are said to give relatively subpar quality via all the analog outputs.
I learned exactly what makes an employee exempt, at least in the states of Hawaii and California, and have been quite convinced for some time that 90% of the tech industry is breaking the law.
So, do you have a rule of thumb for this, or perhaps a FAQ somewhere that I could reference? I'd like to learn more about what it takes to be an exempt employee.
I know that regular TiVos support USB WiFi adapters (and I have my TiVo setup that way at the moment). But, do DirecTiVos have that functionality, or do you know if there're any plans to add that in?
Yeah, Dish does sound enticing, for all the reasons you mentioned (especially the HDTV channels). However, I give DirecTV the edge for its integrated TiVo service -- I already have a regular TiVo and I just couldn't live without it:).
I've been thinking about cutting off my land line. But, I'm also considering signing up for DirecTV (or at least I'd like to leave that option open). Doesn't DirecTV require a land line for its initial setup or otherwise? Or, maybe that's not correct?
Supposing that a land line is required for DirectTV, could I use a broadband-based phone service (like Vonage) for that? Then again, even if that did work, Vonage is still no cheaper than my land line (both are around $25).
This is a bit off-topic, but if you're in Dallas, give the Slashdot Meetup for Dallas a try:). We usually have about half a dozen people each month and it's a good time. (there's also a Linux Meetup, if that strikes your fancy)
