At the company I work for, I work network operations overseeing over 1000 deployed Linux machines. All running Redhat 5.2 with some of our modded out web serving software.
"These days, www.[adjective][noun].com can provide useful sites, as can www.[verb][noun].com . Of course if the verb is 'blow' and the noun is 'job', it's probably not that employment site for meteorologists that you were looking for, but that's a risk you've got to take.
Reminds me of something that happened at my old job once.
A girl I worked with decided to browse online for beauty tips. So she went to altavista and did a search for "facial".
She recieved some rather interesting matches, that could possibly have gotten her fired if managment had ever spotted it.
Maybe an online university isn't for everyone. Maybe a lot of people would be better off going to a school full time, and living in the dorms for the "True College Experiance", but I for one can't afford that luxury.
I work full time. More than full time really. I work anywhere between 50 and 60 hours a week. I make pretty good money, enough to pay for most schools, but in order to go to school I'd need to leave this job, which sends me back to not being able to afford school.
An online university would allow me to take classes in my free time. I already learn quite a bit on my own, but there are certain subjects that I have trouble with, and that I could certainly use the help of a structured class.
You may suggest part time school, or something of the sort, but I work network operations. I don't know when some sort of disaster will occur. I need to be able to work when I need to, without worrying about missing a test, or an important class.
Just because online schooling isn't for you, dosen't mean that someone out there won't benefit from it.
With the new Rage Fury drivers, I'm hoping to beat the snot out of the windows display, after figuring out the workings of X's Dual Display Support. Anyone have Multiple Display Support working in X, and want to share the wealth?
Xfree86 currently dosen't support multiple monitor setups. For that you'd need Accelerated-X (multi-headed), Metro-X, or you could try XFree86 3.9.X.
4.0 Should support multiple monitors, and I'm assuming the ATI Rage drivers will be incorporated into the mainstream Xfree86 by the time 4.0 is released.
But I just bought Accelerated-X so that I could get support for my ATI Expert 128 card for $99. That was just 2 weeks ago. And now my card is supported.
Oh well, hopefully XFree86 will run well on that card. I was planning on switching to XFree again once the card was supported, I just didn't think it would be that soon.
It'll be nice being able to use the fullscreen function of MpegTV (It's designed to work with XFree only)
On a semi-related note... A friend of mine got up this morning and found that his Microwave (which normally displays the date) was completely dead, and would not work at all.
The funny thing is since you don't have the re: in your subject line, and the other comment was moderated down... It just sounds like you're babbling incoherently to yourself, leaving others to wonder what the heck you're talking about.
Businesses who want to have a large company supporting the products they buy. You can't get too much bigger than Microsoft.
I think that could be a rather bad thing considering Microsoft's history of embrace/extent/destroy.
Luckily you can't destroy Linux.. The most they could do is take other companies support with them off on a tangent distribution. All the free software would still be available, but it's possible that say... Oracle or other commercial softwares will only work on the MS/Linux Distribution.
Well, this isn't exactly related, except that it is a star trek observation.
A few people have mentioned the episode where it was reveiled that all the humanoid races were descended from the one race that colonized many planets before they died off.
Well, I seem to recall another episode where due to some sort of genetic disease (i believe that was the cause), everyone started de-evolving into whatever their race origionally came from. Humans started turning more apelike, and Worf started turning into some sort of large spider like creature.
Dosen't exactly sound much like races that evolved from the same genetic material to me. I know I'm just getting picky, but it would be nice if shows like this checked their old episodes for inconsistencies before coming out with new ones that just blow everything away.
I just tried that link, and I was redirected to http://localhost/lizard, which of course replied with a 404 file not found. Is anyone else experiancing the same problem?
Seems logical that if you have email access, then you have icq access.
Not really. It's rather easy for a firewall to block ICQ. They did it at my old job. Although they never were able to completely block AIM (can choose a random port).
Although I do have to agree that SOME form of chat software would work a lot better. Of course encrypted e-mail, or at least offsite mail would be the best recourse. I personally ssh into my machine at home, and I can get my mail from there.
I found a rather nice company based out of Seattle Washington that provides DSL service to locations around the country.
For $80 a month I get 768kbps downstream and 384kbps upstream. Up to 8 static IP addresses. They promote running services, will assist you with DNS, and will let you use any operating system out there.
Their servers are actually linux machines.
The only problem with them that I found is that all of the packets travel to Seattle over an ATM link to the machines gateways, and travel out from there. Not too bad if you live near seattle, but a pain in the ass when you live in Boston like I do.
200ms ping times to get from my machine at home, to my machine at work. Crosses over about 3-4 different ISPs. GAH.
I'm sticking with it though because I don't know where else I'd find a place that will provide that many static IPs for that low of a price.
Uhhh.. I saw about 15 posts from you saying that linux isn't worth it because the menus dont' get added automatically.
Someone tells you that you can add them automatically, and you say that you'd rather do it manually than use the tool that is provided?
I always wonder why people like you bother talking. You just want to complain about problems. You ignore any possible solutions, and then just go on doing what you normally do.
You're not interested in learning anything, just convincing yourself that your way is the right way.
You're saying that the advantage of windows over linux is that you don't need to configure your window manager (explorer.exe)
That would be because Microsoft only provides 1. If you'd prefer, you can just stick with the one default WM in linux. THen you never have to reconfigure. Just close your eyes and pretend you don't have choices if that's what you prefer.
That's because you're on windows. Try reading it from a Linux machine and you'll see the question marks. It's because of the non-standard characters that Microsoft uses.
I'm guessing the origional post wasn't written by hand. It was written in word, or frontpage, and pasted into the text box.

There is already an upside for everything.

People are different, and have different needs.

Very Informative...
Most people would provide a link to the particular document perhaps.
How come I'm never moderator when I need it?
Don't get me wrong.. this is good and all...

Redhat made an announcment yesterday that didn't even get posted on slashdot.
h _vone_2.html
This announcement seems to have started the upward trend.
Basically they're teaming up with another company to make extranet server software with encryption.

I prefer the part about not running on machines with multiple chips.
I guess I only THOUGHT this machine had two processors.
Who would use an MS Linux distro? Honestly?

According to the webpage, there's an update which says that this is in fact a hoax.

I noticed this too.
I read it in the Boston Globe (Print edition)
I'm going to see if I still have a copy of it.

Look again.
I see multiple windows, not an all inclusive window.
The green you see is the desktop I believe

As a few people have pointed out, debian does offer that in a program called Menu.
I've never used it myself, but now that i know it exists, i'm going to look into it.

I don't believe slashdot CAN go public. They're owned by Andover.net.
Correct Link There was a ' instead of a ?
