    You can't learn to be a systems administrator. Everyone wants a quick way out anymore... You have to work to be a systems adaministator. Why is it everyone in this world thinks that you go to college, they wave a magical wand over you, and then you become a different person? The only thing different about college is that they have labs and equipment that you can work with(if your high enough, and if not tough shit). IMHO college is worthless for a person going into the computer feild.

    Why must everyone on slashdot run around yelling without even know what they are yelling about.
    If I send an arp request to you, your machine will send back your MAC address. Don't beleive me, well use your leet slackware hacking skills and type "arp" wooohoo look at all those hardware adresses.

    Why don't you try making a distrabution. Spend all your free time making a nice install, and new package manager that works great, and then make packages for every program 3 times (sparc alpha intel). Then when your done tell me, i'll come over and take it and put my name on it and sell it. Your hard work, my hard money.

    So you have never been to college have you? Book last for about 2 semesters and then they tell you they don't want to use them anymore.
    computers last alot longer then books in college.

    Why on earth would you want to use debain? I made the mistake of installing debain on my alpha. The newest release (about 2 months ago). They have the longest, most painfull install I have ever used, the package manager is a joke, and the steps you need to go through to install.... wait, I see why you like it, it makes you feel cool, mabey they could make a cd with both debian and slackware on it and call it the LEET cd.

    Drawing board means that you haven't even started to create the product. And the time he was writing this I beleive (correct me if i'm wrong) Redhat 6.1 beta was out. /me runs around like a chicken without a head yelling fud

    Ok, This is fud and heres the proof. In his article, he says that Mandrake just came out with 6.1 october first and redhat still has theirs on the drawing board. Um? didn't redhat release 2 days ago? Anyone else catch anything i was only skimming the article (due to lack of content)
    I have respect for the people at Redhat. They went to alot of work to make their installer and package everything up into rpm, but mandrake just takes all that work adds kde and calls it their own, kinda sickening.

    Mabey we should have a anti Christain kick back. In D&D you kill monsters on paper, some times you kill local villagers.
    Now lets compare this with christains. At a small age you are forced to go to church and hear the bible stories about people being killed and mamed. And then while in church or driving by church you see the christain mascot, A big cross with a guy nailed to it. Then you have all the other crack pot christains all over the world killing other people becuase they are not christain. I think this world would be alot better off without christains.

    Oh my god, compaq is going to use linux and they ARE going to make software for it, and then they ARE going to stop supporting software, and little did we know they put bugs in linux that would make it crash and everyone will get mad at linux and go to NT. DAMN COMPAQ for touching our presious(sp?) linux!! ITS OURS DON'T TRY TO MAKE IT BETTER!! AWAY foul demons of hell.. no one wants to help linux, everyone wants to undermind it... and dont' moderate me down damit! ITS A JOKE!

" this certainly sounds like war to me, your geek enclave better learn awful fast about war when it confronts a larger, experienced enemy.

    It will not be a war, it will be a slaughter. In wars people die on each side. In this war the techs will just destroy the stupid in one fail swoop.

    The news is crap anymore. Just a few days ago some paper came out and talked about how the school shooting was covered completly wrong. The kids in the shooting were not even in the trench coat maffi... And don't forget about all the school that made kids stop wearing trench coats becuase of it. The News has no idea anymore what they are doing, they just try for ratings, at since some of them have credible backgrounds people just beilive what they are saying for the truth. I think before people go making rash judgments from what they hear on tv, they should first go out research (like teachers banning trench coats). We have to many dumb monkies in this country.

    I hope it doesn't end. I'm always happy when I see the human race going forward. With all the stupid things that go on (war, politics, spending money on stupid goverment programs), its always a nice breath of fresh air when we can become more technolized.
    I think we need to section of this earth, the dumb people who want to be un computerized and can sit around and make new laws for themselves every day and find new programs to spend their money on that will better the kids, and then the other half which are the computer people, who don't waste time on Stock markets, War, Politics.. they just sit around and get things done and enjoy their inventions. Eventually the non computer side will try to regulate the compute side, and we'll use the technology to kill them all, and end up with a race of smart people who don't do stupid human tricks.

    I can install Linux just fine. I can install Solaris just fine. But installing Windows is another story. I'm not sure if it windows, or people creating crap for windows. I still can't get a driver for my sound card. (the manufacturer won't give it out), and the major vendor I bought the thing from doesn't give it out. So by following the logic of all the people who hate linux, if my sound card doesn't autodetect during windows install, then windows sucks right? Oh ya.. and windows did not detect the modem either.... so does that make windows suck even more? On a brighter note, installing redhat on my alpha, everything was detected. :)

    He shoulda just installed redhat, they don't have that know what feel to it. You get it installed.. log into X and its there with alot of programs you can play with.

    Instead of typing in your log in and password, you can swipe your card to log into the machine, but I think you can also log in without the card if it is set up right.

    You must be the expert... but I LOOOOKED on suns page and the cost of the sun ray is $10 a month for 3 years, thats not that bad. And have you ever seen the price difference between a compaq server and a sun server? The sun server is cheaper.
