I'm starting to wonder if these trolling articles bashing Microsoft are a just a plot to get us to read articles and see those new ads. This comment at the end of Timmothy's summary is what got my attention.

Tanveer1979 writes: though, that "the bright side is that it doesn't send anything to internet, it only downloads files, and compares the files on your computer with the files on server. And I guess a little effort is needed for the malicious to program it to send your data to web."

The last line about a little effort needed for the malicious program is just pure speculation. With a little effort you can send the contents of /etc/passwd to the net and I suppose with a little effort you could send a full inventory of your installed RPM's to the net too. It doesn't mean it is happening though. This is just plain irresponsible journalism here, if you can call cutting and pasting user submitted links journalism.

Doesn't the artist have something to lose here? What if every company did this? Or what if every boradband user published gigabytes of music? The recording industry would suffer. The whole music industry would suffer. Who would be able to finance new bands and promote touring bands? Corporate advertisers maybe? Maybe the next REM tour will have 3 minute Budweiser commercials between songs. That would be fucking cool wouldn't it?

Yeah, the RIAA does some dumb shit with the heavier fees on webcasters, their latest lobbying efforts, and their notion that all listeners are pirates. But after reading this topic, it kind of looks like everyone is a pirate. Fair use is one thing, but with the attitudes expressed here in this public forum fair use will be killed because the RIAA doesn't have to go very far to show lawmakers that there are alot of thieves who will abuse fair use. Thanks guys.

I might have a pretty strong opinion of what music I think sucks but there are millions of teenagers who disagree with me and keep buying N'Sync. The RIAA isn't forcing them to buy this crap. The industry might have created these guys but its the kids who are keeping them popular.

We all assume we are being screwed when it comes to buying a CD for $16.95. Is this because we can buy a stack of 50 blank CD-R's for about the same price?

Besides the cost of the media there are other costs involved in making CD's. Recording studio time, editing, cover art, packaging costs, marketing costs, distribution costs, and I am sure the list goes on. Considering CD's cost me about $16 at record stores in 1986 and they cost $16 in record stores now just how am I being screwed? I can buy them in discount and department stores like Target for about $2 less than a record store in the mall or online for about $2 less than at the mall. But still, considering the end cost to the consumer hasn't really changed in 16 years how can you complain? In most cases they are even cheaper because there are more outlets and certain stores can take less of a markup.

I've noticed a lot of people disputing the addicting nature of Everquest. Everquest players are the ones who coined the term "Evercrack." Anyone who plays and has tried to quit knows it can be a hard game to leave. However, addiction is not always in the substance. Often you will find reformed drug addicts and alcoholics have replaced their addiction to a substance with something else. Often times it will be sports, fitness, or religion. Addiction is built into them for some reason or another.

If this guy was truly an Everquest addict, the chances are very high that he would have had something else replacing the "addiction". Alcohol, comic books, internet pr0n, drugs, chat rooms, eBaying, "first post"ing on slashdot article, who knows.

They probably can't tell her who he socialized with in game but they could at least post a contact number for her so interested parties can contact her about her sons death. They did that much for a Sony employee who lost a son at the World Trade Center on 9/11. They had an MOTD up for about a week with a URL so people could post any info.

Sony's lawyers will also be quick to point out the Columbine case.

Well you must have read at least part of the article to get some of these facts. Unfortunatly you got it pretty mixed up and are talking about cases involving several different players instead of the one in question.

The mother wants some information regarding her sons suicide. Had the guy gone to a night club and come home and killed himself then the mother could go to the night club and try to find people he was with to try to find out why he did it. In this case she can't talk to anyone because Sony is being very uncooperative. Her only recourse is to sue Sony which will do several things. Directly it might get them to put some warning labels on the box and it will get some publicity. Indirectly, the news of the lawsuit may reach guildmates or acquaintences of the deceased in game who may choose for themselves to contact the mother and offer her some condolences so she can get the closure she needs.

Sony is more than capable of putting out a message of the day, MOTD, to notify friends of this player to visit a site where they can choose for themselves if they want to talk to this guys mother. Instead Sony always blurts out this boilerplate response about privacy of its players and that is the end of the matter to them. They clearly have a responsibility here, in this case a moral one, to offer some form of condolence to this guys mother. They can at least let people in game know about the death and let the players choose if they want to do the write thing.

When I played I had a guildmate get severly injured in a car accident. He was in a coma and almost died. It was months before we all found out about it and when we did we all sent messages to our fallen friend. Someone in the guild went as far as hand delivering screenshots and get well postings to him in the hospital which he appreciated very much. The point is, there are some people who play the game who do care. If this guy had friends in the game they might know of some of the problems he was having and that could help his mother recover from her loss.

I think in the end the mother will hear what she needs to but not with Sony's help. The publicity and will prompt a few players will come through to help her.

I personally witnessed the self destruction of more than one person while playing the game and I saw many people put trust in people who they didn't know only to lose all of their in game posessions. For those people who would spend 12 hours a day for more than a year in game only to lose it all because they thought they had a friend it is very devistating. No more different than giving someone you meet in real life the key to your apartment only to come home one day and find all your stuff gone, save a few pennies scattered on the rug.

Everquest is addicting and there is a point where you realize, at least there was for me, that you've spent nnn hours in game and have yyyy treasure. You can quit now and lose it which makes you realize that the nnn hours were all pretty much a waste or you can keep playing until you find something better to do with your time that will make you forget about the waste of nnn hours and the loss of yyyy treasure. Some people quit and come back to the game several times before quitting for good. Others will do something to get banned from the game to ensure that they will be quitting for good. I think this is where you see people getting ripped off by so called friends because the people who do this are caught and they do get banned.

I think Everquest can be a very dangerous game for some people. It is only a game but it has people interacting and bad people do play it. I definatly wouldn't let a child play it and would advise against a mentally ill person playing it as there seem to be enough of those playing already. On the other hand, I have heard great things about how some people with physical handicaps have used the game to give them a life they couldn't normally have.

(And personally I don't think anyone is going to top OS X for elegance in this decade. That thing is just pure art. Go Steve!)

I just don't understand what Amiga is trying to accomplish. For one, they look too fragmented with all the consumer electronic stuff that they have going on. Personally I think they had their chance in the 90's and blew it. I don't think the market will support another OS. Look at BeOS. They claim Microsoft killed them. Linux isn't really taking over the desktop world by storm but on the other hand is probably going to kick Sun's butt sooner than later in the server world. How is Amiga going to be any different than lets say Be or Apple as far as competing with Windows? By filling a niche market so people can run their 10 year old software on modern hardware? Speedball wasn't that much fun.

Let's face it, Amiga's strong point was multimedia. If I am a multemedia professional today then I either have a G4 and Adobe's suite of software or a P4 with Adobe's suite of software. If I am into video then I have a Newtek Video Toaster on an Intel box and my A4000 is propping the window open so I can smell the dogwoods bloom.

Mod me flamebait, a troll, or call me a bigot if you want. But I just don't see the point. Hell, even using this board as a Linux platform doesn't make that much sense to me.
