the specs if I recall are a 350mhz cpu, 128 mb of ram, 4-8 Gb storage, USB 1.1, and a useless 800x480 display. Utterly worthless. I tried researching instructions for installing linux, not easy. All for trash grade hardware.

If they where the same price I just might buy one. Laptops are are terribly hard to mod, with exception of hard drives and mabey some extra ram. first thing I do is install linux anyway so I just buy hardware, and don't care who's name is on it.

given that CPU freq is controlled by volts, and so are fans, a very simple microcontroller with a DAC and ADC could easily do this in less than 500 lines of code. There is no concept into making this they don't teach in a decent 2 year college's technologies program.
it depends on the motherboard. mine has automatic fan controls I can set for fan scaling. its very very simple. see, there is a min temp, a max temp, and a slope for the line(fan by temp). This determines what fan speed at what temp. Set in bios. There is also a bios saftey switch that will shutdown with dangerous temperatures. not sure if every bios does, many do. last computer had this too.
There is no reason the bios shouldn't be able to do this. It doesn't take a lot of compute power for something like this. In fact mechanical thermostats used to do this without computers before microcontrollers took over.
Then there is AMD's q-fan bios tables which let the operating system control the fans. I just let the bios do it though.
eitherway I have xsensors frontend for lm-sensors, as well as psensors which reads GPU and hardisk temps as well.
If the latest cards are not supported, the latest cards will not be bought.

I run linux mint, which is made from ubuntu, which is made from debian, which does most of the heavy lifting of making an operating system out of bits and pieces. Its been running since 1994. Yes, I do donate to their foundation, so far more than I would pay for morphOS, and gladly donate 50-100 a year, every year.

The power of a true general purpose OS with a nice phone interface on it. All of this will now run natively on any android phone with right firmware/drivers thanks to kernel 3.3./3.4.
microsoft killed this for windows phone. I really don't care about MS phones. MS killed what I did care about all for a product NO ONE seems to really want. They've been doing this for 20 years now. Its their job to make graphics cards. Until they release a full API/ABI with a permissive license, yes its their job to write drivers.
