As soon as I get back from driving my gas-guzzling SUV over to the drive-through at McDonalds to shlorp down some good ol' eco-unfriendly mcfood with all of the extra packaging, I'll sit down and think about what we can do to make the planet a happier place for all of us.
I have every box from every id-released game on my shelf, except Quake 3 which I didn't like. I still have the original floppy disk install from DOOM because I can't bring myself to throw them out. I was planning on buying Doom3.
I won't now. Way to go Carmack - sell the shop to Gates and punish your loyal PC fans for not buying an XBOX. You *could* do it.
ha ha ha - check out my previous comment - that's so funny. Yes this will protect computer users by identifying who it was. And then we'll put biometrics and cameras into automobiles and on guns and and and
Canadians do possess a sense of humour and Canada produces many actors and comedians (see this site ) so I have to assume you're trying to make a bad joke, don't know what you're talking about or you're just a knob.
And now you'll post a defence about how you meant it as a joke. If you find that funny I see why no Canadian ever laughs at your jokes.
I can't really say for sure - but then none of us can.
Years ago ATI released a driver that intelligently did not draw pixels that were covered by others and this gave them a huge performance boost (Hyper Z?). This was not a benchmark or game performance cheat - it provided real world performance increases at no cost to visual quality.
Was that a cheat, or an optimization? It sure improved benchmark scores.
The part that annoys me is that real world game testing "exonerates" NVidia, at least currently.
The new card is faster (and should be, being newer and redeveloped). For someone to jump up and scream "cheat" after doing some strange camera viewpoint tricks that most of us cannot do, especially when they have motive to be upset at NVIDIA (check hardocp for their scoop) makes this look less like news and more like a petty vendetta.
But then, none of us KNOW. Does this optimization just occur in the benchmark? Or does it occur in all games? If the game or bench looks pretty and runs fast, who cares how they did it? AS LONG AS IT'S CONSISTENT.
Anyway, I'm inclined to say that the author was at the least irresponsible and probably should have put this a little differently especially since the optics of the situation don't show him with clean hands or pure motive.
Millions of young males are playing games on their new video cards instead of creating teen pregnancies like they should be, authorities have stated!!!
In other news, skin cancer rates are inexplicably dropping, pizza companies posted an 80% increase in business and deodorant sales have dropped.
Did you see what they had to do to "prove" the cheat? Read the article. In other game tests the card beats the ATI 9800PRO so obviously it is faster. (see anandtech, hardocp, tom's hardware, etc if you really care).
The things that they're being accused of reduce work to the graphics engine - and doesn't affect image quality - it's called OPTIMIZATION. The fastest frame rate with the best image quality.
Man someone must have spent hours in front of their computer coming up with a way to get a sensational story like this. ATI has done it, and so does everyone else but what sucks is that this "news" is being flogged everywhere like it's the most incredible piece of news ever.
In this case it's not ANYWHERE NEAR as bad as changing the card's performance based on the name of the program that's being run - I think most people remember that one.
In this case it's a non-story. And yes, we all pay too much attention to benchmarks. I am now one to two generations behind leading edge and plan to stay there. It's far less expensive than driving a new car of the lot every four months.
It's truly shocking. You can say that online commerce is now fully matured given how it has finally attracted the attention of the US States' gov'ts for taxation purposes.
So what bonehead came up with the idea to force people to go into stores with a much higher bottom line as the only option to purchase their product?
That would be like deciding that hotel reservations online are a bad thing, so we'll force people to call our sales staff - that way we can push upgrades and other items on them.
Some people and companies just have to go their own way....
Look we need to de-generalize this thread a bit. Austism ranges from the profoundly disfunctional to the almost normal.
Some studies suggest a genetic link, others suggest environmental triggers. I suspect both will be validated at some point. Consider that autism has been around and documented for centuries - "idiot savants" - yet why a huge increase now?
Some suspect the MMR vaccine since the disease manifests around that time period.
As far as the autism spectrum goes it covers several "disorders". My son is either Asperger's or PDD-NOS (pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified) but seems normal to most people at surface glance. He is high-strung, and needs support for social situations but is extremely bright. He was reading at age 3 and doing base 2 math, multiplication and division at age 5.
In today's world he will be academically very gifted and socially completely disadvantaged. Yet the strange thing is that he is simply expressing traits my wife and I both possess more strongly than we did.
Once I starting reading the literature dealing with my son's condition it became obvious that I expressed many of these traits as a child. My wife was gifted but not as socially challenged. Once I figured things out I was able to appear mostly normal....well that's subjective I suppose.
So - my suspicion based on my experience and that of the parents around us in our support groups is one of two possibilities:
1. That autistic traits are caused by genetic and environmental factors and the environmental factors are increasing in severity....
OR
2. It is genetic and becoming more prevalent because male and female "geeks" are now allowed to co-exist. Perhaps this is nothing more than a result of women's equality allowing women and men to meet their true peers. Consider that in the "old days" women that were mentally gifted did not become doctors or computer programmers. Even 30 years ago it was not common to see female doctors or lawyers - yes they existed but compared to today where parity is finally beginning to show...
I suspect number 2 is more likely and unfortunately since evolution is currently suppressed for humanity thanks to our advances we cannot tell how this will affect our race. Our son will do well aside from some challenges socially, but do we tell him to marry someone dumb or not to have kids?
First for those of you quoting 'religious' dogma about sin - you have zero credibility. With no knowledge of the purported circumstances of many victims becoming infected with HIV, how can anyone speak about sin? Rapes, lack of knowledge (ignorance if you must), unfaithful partners, blood transfusions, etc., etc.
The only purpose of such flamebait is to only get others to respond in a near-mindless state of rage. Much like bullies on the playground taunt other kids to see them explode.
If they truly believed in religion damning those with AIDS then why are they posting under AC?
Stand up for your beliefs! Sacrifice your karma to make a stand! It would be nice to see an articulate, thoughtful argument from someone who truly believes that AIDS is god's (pick one) punishment for the wicked or unworthy. Or that it's a bioligical control invented to remove Africans for the planet.
This leads to my suggestion. When a/. editor posts this type of story, one that is so emotionally charged as to attract a huge share of AC flamebaiters, maybe the AC post rights should be suspended for that article. This might lead to a flurry of id creations but if your karma is zero you should be classed with ACs for this anyway. If your Karma is 0 you should be excluded. Or whatever the actual text is that goes with zero karma.
Some version of this could be workable. Comments?
ACs please go directly to hell. Do not pass go. You are all sinners anyway. Melissa and other computer viruses/worms were invented to take your computers down and remove you from this forum anyway.
The proof of this will be in the actions taken by the "authorities" with regards to their copyrighted material.
If they choose the 200 top users of "file-trading software" with their copyrighted material, and somehow DOS them (not clear that this would be easy anyway) then those clients will either change their IP addresses, create a new p2p id or whatever it takes to get back online. This is not the same as a legitimate means to remove them from this type of action. Wouldn't it make more sense for them to pass a law saying that those people who perform these nefarious acts can be removed from the internet for n days/months/years? This law is really not going to buy them much for two reasons.
If they successfully manage to squelch enough big-time file sharing users, they are hitting the same demographic that houses a large percentage of script kiddies (not to mention a few serious hackers). Likely the backlash will be a situation like the constant warfare between militant factions and governments where the eye for an eye policy is followed. The file sharers outnumber the "authorities" and probably have bigger guns as well as having the advantage of 'guerilla' tactics since they are scattered far and wide, as opposed to the media magnates sitting in their fortresses - They'd better update their firewall software. It'll be gross for their white hats for a while.
The second reason this won't work is because they just don't have the resources to get enough p2p users to make a difference. Honestly p2p users spawn like blowflies and the law appears to disallow the closing of the networks as long as viable users are not violating copyrights. This is a lame piece of legislation and probably will end up costing them more money via public confidence then they will ever 'protect' by defending their copyrights.
Attack of the clueless media magnates....coming soon to p2p near you.
Yes the US causes friendly fire casualties or hits inappropriate targets when bombing but historically so does any army that sees a lot of action.
I am Canadian. I don't drink beer. I don't think this is funny. I do think the poster is a 'tard. I also don't blame America for killing our soldiers by accident. Just try to fix the problem so less Americans and allies/neutrals get killed by accident. And get rid of sociopaths who think it's funny.

Ostensibly for security purposes, biometrics will be used to identify computer users....coded into the CPUs. That'll help the RIAA and MPAA....
there - that should be a good karma wh.....um never mind.....
143? HTTPS is 443 not 143....143 is IMAP
My GOD Belkin's converting secure web requests into email!
Now scans network devices, NIC cards and prevents driver downloads from loading adware into your firmware.
Everywhere else it's known as RoboAragorn.

I did RTFA.
Don't always assume people didn't RTFA because they don't agree with you.
Moron.
This person doesn't qualify due to distance - plain and simple. So why not take the settlement? It's better than nothing.
He should not have gone public. Clearly. What do you expect when you bite the hand that feeds.
Big company screws up, offers settlement. Morally correct person denies settlement. Crowd goes wild....WHY?
He should have taken the settlement. What moral victory is this going to offer him? Now it's public and they won't set any new precedents here.
Duh.

This is a transparent (sorry) plot by IBM or Maxtor to get us to ruin our hard drives so we have to buy new ones!
This is a suicide mod!
