I would hazard that its not just "stay in your cube all day" programming jobs that are losing out - its ALL fields where that can happen. Call center, medical tests, auto design... the list is growing every day.
That isolated cube can be awfully far away!
Plus IMHO those who do well in those kind of jobs tend to have little business / political clout. So they get the shaft. Life blows sometimes.
I agree. You don't want to be just a Perl or C++ programmer. You want to be someone who understands finance or direct marketing or XYZ and who applies their Perl or C++ skills. Much better prospects!
Certain parts of the country have been hit much harder than others. So instead of being in competition with 200 resumes you'll be in competition with 5,000. Look for a job in alternate locations or be willing to relocate. Its hard and kinda crazy to leave your family and friends but since you're starting out the experience might be worth it. You can come back "the victor". I did this.
Or you could find some non profit orgs out there and offer to spruce up their systems and get them going - for free! It could wind up being more experience and responsibility than you might even get for money. Great references too! And a song in your heart. Proves to yourself that you know all you say you do on the resume.
The finaly point is to DO SOMETHING. Just sending out resumes and learning are not enough. Use some of it in creative ways or at least try to.
yeah. That is REAL money. Just think what that could have been used for: funding a great new product, trying to dampen a social ill somewhere, anything really.
"For his part, Mr. Goldfarb said that with reforms in management practices to address BayStar's complaints, it might keep its funds in SCO."
This is troubling. Baystar thinks they have a chance. They are saying get rid of some yooboos and stop living off our cash and we'll still play with you. I think SCO has done it already with the CTO leaving. Thie question is if that is enough good faith. The stock is up. Someone might think so.
I dumped Sprint for the free phone and regret it. I have another six months on the contract but then I'm gone. EVERY MONTH THEY SCREW UP MY BILL. And it takes about an hour of waiting to get someone.
I've wiped disks clean, installed new distros and open office, tweaked it to avoid glitches and then donated the resultant computers to a local homeless shelter. They use them as typewriters for the most part.
I hate to see perfectly good equipment go to waste. (Especially just because I wanted the latest and greatest!)
They don't post "Microsoft News" now on MSN either and they STILL muck it up and make it painfully dull.
So its not the content that can lead to a flop - it is the message container that can ruin it. I think other portal visions are more hip and successful in this area and will come out ahead.
... just look at MSN! (On second thought just trust me on that one.) Even the most non technical people I know find MS sponsered content boring at best and insulting at worse. I don't think people are going to flock to this site with no "street cred".
The only value this site has is it might bleed some cash from MS that would otherwise go to funding SCO.:)
I'm interested in trying my hand at some QT work and this review makes it seem like this book is a good start for me. My concern is QT vs GTK and how much of my experiences will be useful if I change at some point. Whats the scoop?
I'm not really interested in commercial application development - just learning.
... that really have a strong effect on my enjoyment and use of a monitor.
Here are my two cents:
1. Keep at least an arms length away from the monitor. Keeps you from staring at the damn thing up close.
2. Keep some light around the room going. If its nice and dark then you kill your eyes and they tired much faster. I know it makes it harder to see but you'll see longer.
3. Get a plant. You need something oddly shaped in three demensions near the monitor. Gives you something to refocus your eyes and keep from getting eye muscle strains.
So the US pays for some big dumb RAM disk so they can snoop and take away even more liberties from US citizens and others.
And on page two I read in today's newspaper how a few thousand IT jobs have left Atlanta for India and China.
The US's power and might is built upon $$$ which buys you tech, weapons and influence. Soon we'll be in decline, without money nobody will listen to us and the sun shall set on the Empire.
Quote from the first book review "... the source code of the book isn't available (it appears to have been done in LaTeX), which I think makes it legally impossible under the GPL to redistribute the book..."
Is this concept true? If the text is out there you could just as easily reenter it into another mark up language of your choice. It all human readable.
I was playing an online game ( I think it was Battlezone by Activision) a few years ago and my handle was gender neutral. Someone asked if I was male / female. I was taken back by that question as why would it matter? I said female to see if it mattered. Boy did it. I had players taking damage by jumping between me and an opponent, players nearly killing off someone and then leaving the prey for me to finish off to up my score, and even offering tips! Normal protocol is to be mean, rude, and blast everything that moves and even some that don't.
Its one world but not everyone experiences it the same way.
great links - thanks for passing on the info.

Good luck.
mine has a plastic sleeve not leather.
CTO was a typo vs CFO. oops.
Something "long planned" - hmm. Its easy for them to say. But I wonder.

In the end what a shame.
Perhaps he was an easy sacrifice to the money gods. It would seem though that SCO's officers like the limelight more than the business of business.
Hopefully they'll keep wasting investor cash. That is the quickest way of halting this strange saga.

Maybe they need to lose a few bucks then they'll learn how to ask for their money back a little faster.

Don't go there. All that glitters is not gold.

I hope this is of some use.
all depends on what you want to live in.
Hell I'll work for $12.00/hour if I can buy a two bedroom house for say 16K.
Here in northern VA it will cost you 550K.
Something bad is brewing.
There is always that CR/LF issue.
was this file copied over from a windows environment?
perhaps as you finished off the file with SED you allowed a LF?
do an "od -c " on the last few bytes of the file and see what the trailing char is. That will give you a hint as to the source of the problem.
Good luck.

I felt that the article was trying to turn comdex into a usenix conference. Totally different beasts and enjoy each for what they are or are not.

What do they say on this? Any links?

Interesting point. Thanks.
