    I should have emphasised the employees more. At ILM its all 100% legit. but when those employees go home, that copy of Maya downloaded and installed from the internet is not legal.

    3D studio max had a similar implementation. They had the dongle pci card protection that the software communicated with to make sure it was legit. Well the crackers just started removing the references to that hardware. 3.0 (i believe) was released and cracked shortly after. About 3-4 weeks after the pirated release on the internet. Hundreds of users started showing up on the 3d forums asking about degrading models. They missed a portion of the copy protection that would end up slowly destorying the models. a few polygons here and there. Kind of a funny and a really impressive solution (technologically and creative wise)

    the animation people (ILM, Disney etc) all pirate software. lately that really high end stuff has been becoming affordable for the noncommercial user. But they had no option in the past. they needed to learn and become better, and not pay more than their car cost for a program. There companies obvisousely had legit copies

    i definately question the internet being the largest mode for piracy. WRONG. those cd factories in the US that are raided every few weeks that contain 1Million pirated cds or so. thats a LOT of piracy in one bust. That is just the US.

    Try going to Asia, legal software is a fraction of the total sales, same with music, books, and Movies

    entrapment only applies to LAW ENFORCEMENT.

    there is no crime commited here because the people were allowed to.

    Entrapment only applies when a law enforcement official gets you to commit a crime that you wouldnt without them badgering you.

    So since its not a crime to hack into something you have permission to, and they are not police/FBI/etc there is no entrapment

    there would be a way to unkill it then. plus the fact that you own the hardware and they are effectivaly breaking it, that would be considered destruction of property.

    actually thats a myth, it was never used in the dissenting opin, it was used seperatly outside of a trial. it has no legal ground, just an opinion (by a supreme court justice though)

    i doubt many people will purchase that software, if they only want to use it to pirate ebooks. they are stealing books, they will still the software.

    someone who buys that software, will have a legit use for it

    first off, email passwords could easily be sniffed, passwords of all kinds can be collected.

    but most importantly, he doesnt want NONpaying customers on the network. He needs a way to authenticate a client, and prevent others from getting the mac address and spoofing etc.

    The users may not care about their security, but thats their problem. he cares about people abusing the network

    BSD seems the best for this. Its the most free, and since companies and individuals can use it the same, it gives everyone an oppurtunity with little restrictions.

    I prefer GPL personally, but thats my own opinion for MY code.

    i have been looking at this as an option for some programs, but whats irritating is some programs require full database such as PostgreSQL, when i like mysql. I usually dont want to run both. fortunatly i have a bit of programming experience and i can usually modify it. but some programs it seams that a real database would not be needed. To bad there wasnt a way for easy plugin access, ODBC could work, but still thats not a great example. something in a standalone "db", like access 2000 is used (on the windows side)

    In my programming C# book, Microsoft has come a long way with using xml database recordsets. its kind of cool and pretty easy to implement. which works perfects in smaller applications.

    You are technically right, the DMCA doesnt exist outside the USA, but laws just like it do.

    not to mention that you didnt put anybody at risk. There were not allowed to be on your property in a tree nontheless. That is much different than say a broken frig or something in the front yard etc.
