    Security will not be better when every PCs are the same and use the same software, system administration will be easier.

    I use lots of gnome/kde programs but neither environment, I prefer windowmaker.

    Same is valid for xterm, just pick up your favorite xterm replacement. I use eterm which was planned for enlightement so ...

    Red Carpet CorporateConnect provides centralized Red Carpet updating to corporations and workgroups, including special features which allow system administrators to distribute their own in-house applications to their users - quickly and securely - through the Red Carpet interface.

    So, it seems that there's still a 'normal' version, for use with 'normal' programs, using 'normal' server and a commercial one, with high-bandwith servers and some commercial soft.

    No problems, just use the one you prefer depending, pay if you want/can and use the free version otherwise.

    Of course, let's hope that there will still be free updates available.

    By not making any commercial use of these patents.

    Any individual can make a *private* use of these patents (if I remember well)

    Patents gives the patenter the right to make a commercial use of the claims of the patents.

    As long as you're not selling/renting/... it, you're perfectly authorised to do it.

    So, intersestingly, it is very obvious that the full lifetime of product decrease ...

    Moreover, windows 2000 has the shortest lifetime and is currently in use in lots of (big) companies for which winXP doesn't make a lot of differences (play games ?)

    Did someone else noticed that transgamin has licensed macrovision safedisc copy protection ?

    At least linux programmers will be able to protect their work from piracy and stop the widespread copying of cd containing GPL software.

    That's a big hope for the hole FSF foundation which will be able to maintain its value and retribute its shareholders.

    available spectrum is from 3.7 to 4.2 Mhz.

    For your information, IEEE 802.11(b) products are in the 2.4 GHz range and future 802.11(g) products will be in the 5 GHz range.

    So it won't work except if you develop a new version of 802.11 in the MHz (and products).

    Good luck !

    (frequency hopping will be very hard to do in a 0.5 MHz bandwith)

    In order to avoid psychological problems and other traumatisms, US Authorities have decided to ban the word 'Down' due to mottos like 'another plane down'.

    Unfortunately, the key 'Page Down' has been removed from all keyboards in united states and moreover, users cannot 'Scroll Down'.

    As the link to the HOWTO is not at hte top of the netfilter homepage, it is not possible for users in the US to reach it.

    When you've got a patent, what is protected is not the description of the patent but the claim(s).

    So this patent cover not just :

    • "recording one program while watching another"
    as stated on the /. frontpage but

    "A process for the simultaneous storage and play back of multimedia data, comprising the steps of:

    • accepting television (TV) broadcast signals, ...
    • tuning said TV signals to a specific program
    • ...
    • providing at least one Input Section, wherein said Input Section converts said specific program to an Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) formatted stream for internal transfer and manipulation
    • ...
    • storing said video and audio components on a storage device
    • ..."
    multiple steps describing what is a Tivo, and not a VCR .

    The description are usually written to fool peoples. It is originally means to describe the object (the claims) of the patents to people so that they are easily understood. Not more !

    Yep, when they were under AT&T control, Bell Labs haven't inovated a lot.

    (fiber optics, comms satellites, transistor, unix, c, cellular phone networks, ...)
    (and just a few nobel prizes)

    Yep, I have checked the website using the IP adress. I don't say that their WEB server was down but that their server was down.

    Btw, the web server works but is un-usable due to and tags relating to microsoft.com references.

    Have you checked the internic databases ?
    I don't think they are screwed up, they are pointing to the accurate microsoft dns server (see others posts).
