    You know, this is one case where I'd have to say, "Who gives a rat's ass?"

    Someone with too much time on their hands had an article to write this week, apparently.

    In the not-too-distant future, wireless /will/ replace a lot of the cabling, so it's not like the "problem" will get a whole lot worse. Don't believe the hype.

    I'm all for wind farms, personally. I got wood looking at the one up in the hills just outside of Cardiff (forgive me for forgetting the place name, it's been 5 years or so).

    Interesting article (yes, I read it), but one thing I don't understand. The author states early on that "Both men must find ways to motivate people to work together so knowledge can spread and have maximum impact on improving software quality."

    I don't see Linus doing that kind of thing. Does he, personally, motivate a damn thing? It's not like I studied the history of this "movement", but didn't he basically just toss the infant OS out there for whomever to use in whatever way?

    Maybe I'm reading too much into it...

    Aside from any real danger that might be posed by this, I think Hollywood isn't doing the scientific community any favors (this season's 24, Outbreak, etc...).

    That said, I'd volunteer only if there were about 7 figures in hazard pay included. :)

    The only problem I have with that thinking is that people just expect the government to take care of them when they get laid off.

    If I knew noone would help me, I'd sure as shit save up a bunch of months' worth of salary just in case.

    In fact, that's just what I'm doing, and all the financial planning papers I've read say the same: Make sure you have 3 to 6 months+ saved, in cash or easily-convertible investments (NOT the stock market), for emergencies.

    Unfortunately, the Great Society safety nets discourage people from saving in this way. Better to just buy buy buy until you have nothing left, then come begging when the axe falls.

    Of course you'll get people who say "What about the poor who have to spend all their money living paycheck to paycheck?" To them, I say such people should have made smarter choices (fewer kids, maybe 1 tv instead of 3, basic cable instead of digital, don't bother with a cell phone, etc). The "poor" in this country are far from it, compared to the rest of the world...

    Some of them probably are kooks. However, the things you point to are simply part of the gov't structure that is outside the minimal parameters government ought to have control over.

    Libertarians want the least governmental oversight, being against the things you mentioned, while distasteful to non-libs, are at the very least logically consistent with their general feelings.

    As for me (leaning heavily lib), I think public schools are a mess and could use a lot more competition. I do like public lands, and I think "the safety net" is relatively silly.

    Me, I just vote libertarian as often as possible, but I don't go join any damn party...

    It sounds like your beliefs (the crack-smoking bit at the end :)) really lie in the libertarian spectrum.

    Politicians should never have real jobs then, by your "reasoning". If he works for an oil company, then the whole war is about making him rich. If it's a car company, it's about selling tons of cars to China. If he works for a legal firm, he's a wicked Special Interest lobbyist.

    So what, should Senators, when they are defeated / retire from the Senate, be forced to go live on a tropical island somewhere??

    While your definition of which one was "bad" is obviously shaded by your beliefs, the fact of the matter is Clinton didn't get impeached for getting a hummer from an intern.

    He got impeached because he lied about it in a court of law, which is a no-no in this country. It's called perjury.

    It's interesting that you think the R's are the ones going off the deep end. Your quote "can and may well be suppressing dissent at home" marks you as a fool, however: There's plenty of dissent on the homefront, and if you can't see it, there's nothing I can do about it.

    Mod this nonsense down. What does the output of 'free' have to do with the price of tea in China?

    Right now, wmaker (using top) is using approx. 4 MB of RAM on my machine.

    "Everyone knows" Linux loads as much stuff into RAM as possible. I don't think 'free' has anything to do with how much RAM is actively used by specific programs...

    Ah, pretty interesting idea. I haven't touched movie encoding at all... Do you have some kind of S-Video input from your VCR?

    Where does it cost $26k? I ordered mine for just a shade under $22k and it has the Bluetooth "Smart" entry system.

    Very cool shit: You don't even have to take your keys out of your pocket, the car just knows you're sitting in the driver seat.

    The more expensive upgrade (that brings the cost to about $24k) has the GPS nav system and a bluetooth connection for cell phone use.

    Btw, I'm in the DC area, but I had to order my car from back home in Buffalo. :) The wait here in DC is into February.

    Just curious, if you no longer rely on physical media for movies, are you just downloading them from Kazaa (or elsewhere of course), just watching them at the theatre? On PPV? Or something else? :)

    Though I do agree: the only paper I really use now is scrap for sketching notes...

    I don't think people will "get" the big picture any time soon though. Inertia is a powerful force. Maybe by the time we're old and retired.

    I rather disagree. I think it's society's goal if you live in a socialist republic. If you live in my libertarian utopia :) it's the individual's responsibility to manage risk.

    I think most of the issues of the day (wars, social security, medicaid/care, etc) are essentially driven by people who think like you do ("it's the job of society") whereas people like me ("bah, it's everyone's individual responsibility") see potential results and solutions far differently. Oh well...

    "Stay up to date in the marketplace" is about the weakest reason I've seen anywhere. That's like saying "Let's jump on .Net because it's new, even though Java works great for us".

    The idea that the latest, shiny app must get used is indicative, to me anyway, of the immature nature of the web design industry. Gandalf's Theory (the one about breaking shit for the sake of it = stupid :)) doesn't apply here, I guess, thank the gods for more mature industries where you can learn a tech and not worry about it for a few years...

    But I am curious: What's so great about the 2004 versions?

    Everyone cries about the horror of the future where we'll only be spoon-fed what they want to feed us.

    What a crock. There has, and always will be, alternatives. While it's entirely appropriate for concerns to be raised now, to expect that we'll end up with some sort of "Evil Corporate Control" over what we can do with our lives is kind of paranoid, don't you think?

    I mean, we COULD actually just go outside, sit in a hammock and read a book, couldn't we? Television entertains me less and less as time goes on (though I won't even try to claim I'm one of those who doesn't have one / never watches it).

    The problem is, we're kind of talking about two different things.

    1. Trying to be the creator of generally useful open-source software (something like Apache or MySQL). That's the hard part, I'll agree with anyone there.

    2. Trying to use open-source software as a basis for building further "stuff" whatever that stuff may be. In this case, OSS is the greatest thing since sliced bread, because you don't have to start from scratch, or pay someone all your hard-earned scratch to get started.

    You must have no experience in building a company or working for a successful company. Using Free Software that works with open standards and is reliable most certainly does benefit a company in the long run.

    My company is based on the concept of Free Software as a foundation.

    Your nonsense about "no advantage" is only in the Free Software area, which is true: If you and I both use Apache (for instance) as a basis for further development, our further developments had better be differentiated in some way.

    I'm not hammering on you, per se. Most of the guys responding to you, however....

    1. YOU might not like skinnable software, but it's the 'in' thing and whether you like it or not, it's not going away.

    2. HTML email that YOU receive might all be spam, or might waste too much space, but joe sixpack and ed executive love it.

    3. Cold cathodes might be "old news" now, but only if you've seen a few dozen. Don't lie and say the first time you saw a case like that you didn't say, "Sweeeeeet".

    It's like the Enlightenment WM. The first time you saw it you said, "Hey, that's pretty sweet". That's what the book is talking about: How style is pretty much just as important as substance. It has nothing to do with "you" (the whining anti-style /. collective) and your own rebellion against it (which, in itself, is another expression of style -- see the punk rocker example given by the reviewer).

    I hate to be the bearer of bad (obvious) news: None of the rest of us 6.x billion people give a shit whether or not you think ricer Hondas are cool, so do us a favor and stfu. /rant.
