"I'd just like Microsoft to explain themselves this one time. Completely, thouroughly, honestly. Then they can tell us what they will do to ensure it won't happen again"

We did. Dunno why no one points this out, but:

I emailed Zonk about it but I don't think he's had a chance to update the posting.

Long story short the idea that this is intentional rests on the premise that only an incorrect value produces the vuln. That is totally wrong, both correct and incorrect values trip the vulnerability. Besides doesn't it seem odd to create a backdoor that would require the user to first visit a website? What, were we going to take out a superbowl ad suggesting people visit www.microsoft.com so we could...uh...what exactly?

I don't have the verbiage here but if someone has a copy of advance wars post it.

Basically it says that backups are never needed, therefore you are in violation of copyright if you make a backup. Or something to that effect.

    Dear Eric,
    No it doesn't. Unless they:

    a) sell it with your PC and you have to AGREE with the LICENSE by default and pay for it even if you don't want it.

Um...there's tons of places where you can purchase a machine with no OS, or you can build your own. Despite what people think, there is no "innate" right to own a Compaq/Dell/IBM/Mac PC with your choice of operating system pre-installed. If you like Compaq computers and you want to run Linux on one, you have to ask yourself if the price of paying for the Windows license and deleting the software is worth running Linux on a Compaq computer. If it is, then shut the fuck up. If not, still shut the fuck up and go build your own machine or purchase one from another place or vendor.

    b) they force on you upgrades that you do not want

Funny. No one has ever come to my door and forced me to upgrade. Everyone makes a choice when a new version of something comes out. If you like the new features, you buy it and install it. If you don't THEN DON'T INSTALL IT. There's a million places available on the net to obtain previous versions of operating systems and software and most companies, even the dreaded evil empire, support operating system releases up to 2 versions back.

You can't blame loss of flerbage on the fact you're a whiney fuck who can't pull up an Internet search engine to avoid the companies you hate so much.

Seanbaby is just one of a hundred sites out there offering not just pop culture commentary, but honestly some of the more cutting edge humor available today (except for our site. Our Tshirt slogan is "They're not funny"). Seanbaby just happens to be the best at it.

More disturbing is Katz weekly trumpeting of the impending AOLTW/Microsoft/Whoever else takeover of the Internet.

Of course we should be aware about these things, of course we should celebrate sites like Seanbaby that, frankly, rock. But can we tone down the "DEAR GOD QUICK EVERYONE READ SEANBABY TO STOP THE AOL YOU GOT MAIL MONSTER OMGWTF!" hysteria?

  11. Gleaning the Pube. on Extortion and the UGO Network? · · Score: 3

The days of getting paid 6 figures a year (or even five) for cutting and pasting news, or using the words "pimpdaddy smackdown" on your website is way over. It's a wonder UGO lasted as long as they did. Those who are smart, like OMM, saw the writing on the wall and made contingency plans.

God knows what someone like Blue is going to do. Of all the sites, his is the most useful gaming cut and paste site on the net.

The problem has been, and will continue to be, the cost of bandwidth. Serving out 100k hits a day or greater just costs way too much money for an independent person to deal with unless they are independently wealthy. One good /.'ing of your site, and your in hock to you ISP for thousands of dollars if you are running sko more cost effective co-lo. This makes networks like UGO sort of a required thing.

But networks can't exist on ad banner money alone, and users expect the web to either be free or, failing that, MASSIVE bang for the buck.

I still maintain that the furure of these networks is to offer massive content at a yearly subscription rate, paying affiliates by continuing to use ad banners. How would it work? Like this. Say an ad banner network, GAN, has 50 affiliates. They offer full access to all 50 affiliates for 9.95 a year. (here's the massive content/bang for the buck part) Now since the network cant survive on that alone and pay their affiliates, they also offer one single ad banner on their affiliate sites (at a rate much lower than has been done previously) and they pay their affiliates that way.

For those who say "no fucking way I'm paying a yearly subscription and still put up with ad banners", well that's how magazines work. You pay your 4.95 for newsweek or "out" magazine AND LO AND BEHOLD! The mag ALSO has advertisements. And newspapers work the same way. And fucking paying for cable TV doesnt stop the commercials. Jesus, they even play commercials in front of movies in the theater now. Buck up and get with the fucking program hippie. The web isnt any different.

Will Blue (or even the /. guys) continue to make a living this way? Probably not, he'll have to get a day job or start selling original content. But at least the sites will continue for those who want to run it as a hobby, and they wont have to worry about bandwidth costs.

To think that anyone could make a living, or even deserve to, simply posting links readers send in is a little ludicrous. And yeah I understand the irony that that is exactly how /. works.

I'm just glad Paul "fucking" Steed is no longer out there to show up on fan sites, berating the Internet for being a place where people can express opinions.

The guy is unbelievable. I mean IMHO no one can deny his model work. But he was a thorn in id's side for a long long time. Practically every time he posted to some message board I bet owner's cringed.

Keep in mind he's done many things in the past year that I personally would have fired him for if I ran the company. Those who would berate the rather silent partners at id (Cloud and Adrian Carmack) keep in mind all the times Steed pissed off the community with his statements about the fans of the game. Measure that against how many times you ever heard Adrian Carmack complain about the fans' opinions publicly.

All in all, a new Doom represents a hefty challenge for id. But I think they need a challenge, and I'm completely pumped about their focus on single player. The only bad part is like Dan Quayle, Bob Dole, and the entire cast of Battlefield Earth, we won't have him around to kick anymore.

  15. A new Hope on RIAA Claims Initial Legal Win vs. Napster · · Score: 1

I've been thinking a lot about the recent MP3 mess since I wrote a post about it on our website (http://www.gamersangst.com/views/index.cfm#231).

A lot of people make the distinction that its about the dinosaurs of the music industry vs. the new technology of the Internet. To me its not about that at all. Its about the mediocrity of music vs. its current high cost.

Dr. Dre and Metallica have become real watered down lately. Their only hope at sustained money making popularity is to protect their vested interest in their earlier, better music and insuring it does not get freely pirated. If it does the amount of fans buying their older, better stuff dwindles and the amount of people buying their "comfortable" new stuff is already low.

Likewise the RIAA realizes that music is overpriced, bands are overpayed, and fans are restless. *Their* only hope to sustain their royalty and membership fees is to pressure alternative avenues of music distribution to become a part of their fee organization in order to sustain their revenue growth.

Along comes napster. Suddenly here I am, sitting at my desk wondering "I wonder what ever happened to that Slade song I used to like in 7th grade?" Hop on naptser and 5 minutes later I'm listening to said song.

Its not about dinosaurs vs. new technology. Its not even really about greed in its most simplistic sense. Its simply about people trying to protect a system that has gathered them both money and power. Which is an age old human situation that we end up creating for ourselves.

To the RIAA: I for one would pay a reasonable price for mp3 music. Get off your fucking ass and provide it instead of sueing people answering a need you are too greedy to agknowledge.
