What exactly is Windows Terminal Server? Is it something like X? I suppose it adds isolation so vendors can't cause problems, but why wouldn't you give them a CGI web interface while letting employees tunnel in instead? If it's a text-based service instead of GUI, is there any particular reason not to do it using telnet and a Linux box?

Further, "internet connectivity" isn't absolutely necessary; rather than run broadband to hundreds of points out in nowhere land, things can get started by setting up an isolated LAN with a single web server. Ship 'em a couple of 250 gig HDs full of goodies, like textbooks and freeware and novels and movies, and they'll be okay until the broadband is in place.

When Google uses this "play money" they lose the opportunity to make money from outside. It *is* an advertising budget; without it, Google would beat out EVERYTHING, but its revenue would trickle to a crawl. The best way to play the game would be to allocate a budget just like it was using someone else's service; that keeps everything under control.

I have the reverse problem; HP made a few laptops with full-power Pentium 4 CPUs a couple of years ago, and I got one. It's nice and fast, but its battery life is roughly 23 seconds.

  13. why iTunes isn't lossless on Does Portable Music Have to be Compressed? · · Score: 1

There's a fairly good reason why the audio files sold by iTunes isn't lossless. It isn't a matter of bandwidth; the amount of bandwidth required to upload larger files is a fraction of a cent apiece. The real reason is because these songs are meant to be uploaded to an iPod, and their memory space (even the 60 gig models) is limited. Putting lossless audio on them would cut the number of hours of audio they can hold by 75%, and users would revolt. Letting people downsample the files would be problematic because of the DRM, and letting people choose between lossy and lossless would complicate things. Therefore, they made a decision.

Still, don't fret people. CD prices can't maintain this price level, so audiophiles will be able to buy the tracks and rip them themselves without paying too much more for their tunes.
