A number of years ago the myth was true. Back when Blaster was doing its thing a fresh XP machine would be toast within minutes of getting plugged in. Of course this was before the service packs where the concept of "maybe we shouldn't leave all the back doors wide open" was introduced.
Yeah, old fashioned family values - the cure for society's ills - NOT.
The child grows up thinking that physical violence is normal. They'll grow up thinking the showing anger and rage is normal. Then they'll be in school and in the workforce and they'll wonder why they can't get along with others or worse, they'll end up in jail [childhelp.org]. They'll have employment problems all their life and hiring mangers will never give them feedback so they'll be going through life wondering what the fuck is wrong with everyone.
Nevertheless, any effort to correct and steer behavior requires both the carrot and the stick. I will be the first to agree that lashing out at one's child in rage is counterproductive and harmful. However, when lesser measures have failed and the child is still displaying inappropriate behavior, a spanking that is given rarely and calmly will get the message across that the child fucked up badly and is now in very serious trouble.
Physical pain is a part of life. We use it as a correctional measure on our dogs, on our horses and on all other forms of life that we deal with and that are not capable of rational debate.
And somewhat offtopic, a limited display of anger and rage *is* normal. Keeping it all bottled up inside is rather bad for you. Slamming a door, cursing or punching a boxing bag for a while provides a wonderful outlet.
Fortunately, the best way to find out is to borrow somebody else's laptop to give a presentation and then put in your personal USB stick in front of the audience so that everyone can be amazed at the pictures that get automatically put into a slide show...
Yup, it's pretty much IRC, except one's future employer has been provided with a better search engine to find out all the inane crap we spouted 20 years from now;-)
I see my boss about once a week anyway, mostly to catch up. He does his thing, I do mine and we have phones and e-mail when something needs to be discussed.
All a matter of mutual trust and understanding.
Then again, living in a country where the concept of "at-will" employment would be ludicrous helps too I suppose.
Corporate power is, by nature, less powerful than a tyrannical, omnipotent state. Without a powerful state to back it up, a corporation -has- no power not given to it by its citizens, and citizens can reduce the power of a corporation in a blink of an eye compared to power of a government.
I'm a corporation with a couple dumptrucks full of toxic waste. You're a private citizen with a back garden that has a stream crossing through it. My toxic waste is now in your back yard.
So what are you gonna do, punk? Cry to the government? Socialist!
Fear doesn't get you anywhere. Rational skepticism and an active interest do. *Anyone* who shouts that he/she would do a better job than whoever is in charge right now should be scrutinized to the exact same level as those they criticize. Those who desire power are almost by definition unfit to wield it.
I'd wager to suggest that true believers have always been rare. There's the fruitcakes on one end and the cunning priests looking for political power and a cushy job indoors on the other. In between there's the silent majority just trying to put food on the table/in the cave/etc. They've been raised with a religion and sort of go through the motions because that is what all the neighbours do, but in reality they don't give it all that much thought.
Then again...perhaps I'm just underestimating the ability for self-delusion when it comes to Homo Sapiens
And you know this...how exactly? Got any solid number or citations to back that up or did you just pull that out of your ass?
Many Slashdotians have more than enough disposable income to buy whatever games we want when we want them. gog.com provides(provided?) several things pirate sites don't at an extremely low price, and I for one have picked up quite a few of their games even though I still have the original CD-roms still lying around, simply for the convenience and compatibility with a modern OS.
It's not going to be a hot seller shop and I'm left to wonder how well the titles now run on a modern OS.
Congratulations on never having heard of them but instantly arriving to conclusions anyway.
For the record, one of the reasons that they're quite popular with a lot of us is that they take old games, strip out any DRM they may have and make them run properly under the latest OS's. So far every game I've gotten from them worked flawlessly under XP64 and Win7 without any unnecessary configuration or tinkering.
MS Project is the only thing that I haven't actually found a solid open source replacement for, and no one ever actually USES it! They just put all their project plans and timelines into Excel!
No big surprise there. MS Project licences are horribly expensive compared to excel.
Besides, it doesn't take that much effort to do the same thing in excel, including all the spiffy gizmo's with regards to capacity etc. Whip it up once and save it as a template. Especially when you do a lot of smaller projects (3-6 months, less than 100k) MS Project is simply overkill.
If you take money from the rich and give it to the poor, that is fundamentally wrong.
Says who? We've been taking things from one another since we first fell out of the trees. Granted, for 99% of human history it was the rich and powerful taking it away from those who already had far less, but that's a minor detail.
Taxation is the price for living in a civilized society. So please, if you are of the opinion that all forms of taxation are theft, why not piss off and literally sit by yourself on an island?
I listen to people like you, a good chunk of slashdotland....it's like the Enlightenment never happened. Like Rousseau, Voltaire, and Jefferson didn't get thru to y'all the importance of government as a social contract and consent of the governed.
Quite the contrary. Which is why we ridicule the exceptionally small percentage of selfish dirtbags that seem to think they can reap all the benefits of society without paying for any of it.
Obama, et al, really do think your money belongs to them first. To be doled out as they see fit.
Populist claptrap. Citation needed. And no, Glenn Beck doesn't count.
EVE online went live in 2003, so running close to 7 years now.
I think there's more factors in play though. They're very supportive of fan projects (free advertising) and don't care about people using their IP so long as it's not commercial. Add the way skill training works(it takes X amount of time train a skill, doesn't matter if you're playing or not) and players are far more likely to stay for longer periods of time and keep their accounts active while not actually playing.

Maybe less than would go wrong if Iran got the bomb?
Now here's a nice scenario for you...what if Palin got the bomb?
Please excuse me while I convert all my possible credit into hookers and blow, the world's gonna end anyway...

Why not Rincewind? Not like he hasn't saved the world before, or used a magic sword for that matter. (First or second book, don't recall which one)
Actually, I'm having a lot of fun distilling what I want to say down to its bare essence in order to fit the 140 char space.
Then again, I mostly use twitter to see my elected officials make fun of each other(and egg 'm on a bit at times).

Lets think this through for a minute.
You know what, that makes perfect sense...oh wait.
Who wrote the US constitution again?
He did do a full interview in the O'Reilly show as well earlier this year.
Linky
No matter how you feel about the guy's program, you gotta admire him for his balls for steppings into the lion's den and taking it on the chin.

No wonder you posted AC...

Team Colbert vs. Team Stewart? :) Lots of innocent(insofar as that is possible for celebs) bystanders...I'd play that.
My thoughts exactly. They announce a sale on the 16th and on the 17th close down stating "they've thought long and hard about it".
Curious to see what happens next. Had quite a few more purchases planned with them, but in light of the circumstances...
So *don't* distribute it and use it exclusively in-house, which is perfectly allowed under the GPL.

Simple, just compare how many Stones of Jordan you need to trade for it... :)
Oh, good grief, now you reminded me of Waterworld...talk about a trainwreck of a movie.
Or far more important...if ones meditates for long enough will there be pi?
We may smoke more, but we also tax the everliving crap out of tobacco.
