'Hate crimes' are a distinct subset of existing crimes where the gender/sexual preference/race/whatever plays a role in the selection of the victim.
Kicking the crap out of a guy specifically because he's gay is hence weighed in a different fashion than kicking the crap out of a guy "just because". Whether or not making the distinction is a good thing I leave as an exercise for the reader.
I use twitter to speak directly to my elected representatives. No media or anything else inbetween to spin words, direct 1 to 1 contact(with the rest of the world watching).
Oh, please. I don't give a rat's ass about soccer/football, and even I understand the offside rule. If all else fails, just write it out in pseudo-code in order to illustrate it to a typical/. nerd;-)
Don't you find it hypocritical that this thread like most threads do nothing but trash lawyers. But what profession do they automatically run to when they are pissed off over a specific subject and THEIR reading of the law?
No, not really. Because the organization that typically pursues violations of the GPL etc. in the US is the EFF and they have a very solid reputation for trying to solve matters in an amicable fashion first. Only when the other party categorically refuses to play ball do they start involving the justice system.
There is a group of people that feel they have the right to download anything and everything on the planet. There's also a group of people that supports open source and doesn't appreciate it when the license under which it is distributed gets violated. Both of these groups can be found on Slashdot, but that does not mean they consist of the same individual people.
I let myself get paid for fixing people's computers. Usually it involves dinner and some drinks and on very rare occasions a more physical demonstration of gratitude.
It may not be hard cash but I consider it adequate;-)
We are being thought about Anne Frank. The famous Jewish girl. We aren't being told about that the Dutch had one of the highest degrees of telling on people who where hiding those Anne's... And there are many, many more examples of this. So give this guy a medal for putting history as it should be... the way it was.
Interesting. I distinctly remember from my history classes that we(the Dutch) had both the highest percentage of resistance members as well as the highest percentage of collaborators. In fact, we had enough collaborators to have our very own My First SS Division.
You know, up till today I'd have agreed with you. We're doing one heck of a job catching up though, so no worries.
Now please excuse me while I go outside to ask every low income nimrod I can find whether they're happy with what voting right got them (aka: they got shafted and they're too fucking ignorant to even know it).
Just for a second there I thought someone had made a sequel to Cyberstorm 2 and I completely missed it...turns out it's a game just for government employees...bastards!
Just out of curiosity, did you also smoke non-joints at the time? Or was the moment you stopped smoking pot also the moment you effectively stopped getting nicotine?
You know, I'd pay good money for a proper 3d movie full of Matrix style slo-mo shots of Han Solo doing horrible things to Jar Jar over and over and over and over and over and over and over *** BRAIN OVERLOAD ***
We all reach a point where "enough is enough" and we can't be bothered to keep up anymore. That's when we start complaining about new stuff instead of calling it awesome, reminisce about how much better things were back in the day, even though they involved going uphill both ways in the snow, and start voting conservative.
Now if you'll excuse me, there's some kids outside that seem to be enjoying themselves, I'd better go and cut up their ball.
Unions are able to organize across an entire industry, but how frequently do employers bargain collectively with the unions?
Over here in the Netherlands, quite regularly. It's not uncommon for all the unions that cover a certain industry and the various employers to get together and negotiate a set of working conditions for the entire sector in a single go.
Then again, our unions are actually mostly reasonable. Cultural thing, I guess.
Assuming he is correct, and I have no reason to doubt him given his credentials, does this sound like the position of a rational, cooperative, civilized nation-state?
Isn't what he is saying pretty much what MAD is all about? The moment anyone uses a nuke, we *all* die, hence no one uses nukes.
Besides, if a people gets kicked all over the planet for 2000 years and blamed for every wrong in the world I can't really fault them for making it extremely clear what's gonna happen the next time someone tries to wipe them out. Shame we haven't quite figured out that we(being the western world) are moving towards pushing the Muslims in the same direction and there's a heck of a lot more of them...
IANAL so don't know full ramifications of the "subject only to your privacy settings", but seems to me that means if I set something as private then it's private between myself and the person(s) I shared it with.
And if a judge subpoena's one of those folks to come on in and testify they're just as obligated to do exactly that.
In other words, if you tell people about you pulling stupid shit and whoever you're up against in court finds out, those people are going to (have to) tell on you.
Lots of corporations hold / promote / back activities that do not provide an immediate return on the bottom line. If you're looking for tax deductions anyway you might as well go with something that you care about and gets you some good PR in the process.
Not saying that that makes it any less "good" or idealistic, just that it really isn't all that uncommon.
Indeed, over here in Western Europe they tend to be roughly twice as expensive as the competition but they also typically outlast all the other offers by a factor of at least 2.
Big initial investment but pays off over the years in simply knowing you have a quality piece of machinery. 1 downside though, their appliances tend to be bloody heavy so for someone that moves house a lot they may not be the best choice... *rubs back*
I was just about to yell at you about your irrational hatred of Farmville when you managed to turn it into praise for your (most likely irrationalas well) love for EVE.
So when the baby-boom generation shows up demanding all the benefits we can't afford...we're talking about a rise of the cyborgs?
That is gonna make it so much easier to convince them to move to smaller housing...

Which would be a breach of contract if they play their cards right, leaving you even more fucked up than in the previous situation.

And in politics, the major question is "Are we going to do something about it now or leave it for our kids to deal with?".
And living in a country that has over half of its landmass below sealevel, I'm personally in favor of "right fucking now". ;-)

Anecdotal evidence score: 1:1
Sorry, we Dutchies are still #1 on that front I'm afraid, with the Danes coming in second. :)

Since a cubic meter of natural gas contains about 10 times the energy of a kWh, you'd still be ahead by using gas for heat then.
Next up: Twitter worms that discuss Natalie Portman naked and petrified, GNAA trolls and of course the classic penis bird.

Let's just say that #failbook was rather high in the Twitter trends during the outage ;-)
