    granted, fast-page memory of decent size is a bitch. i bought 2 * 16 for my old pentium 90 back in the day and spent a fortune :) then again, these were only really used in the 486/early pentium era iirc

    define old? I still see plenty of old computers for sale for like 20 bucks or so, think 386, 486. I occasionally get one if it has a pretty AT case or power supply i might be able to salvage.

    Cars have evolved a *lot*, especially with regards to safety. The old car will still run, but the odds of surviving a serious crash are a lot less in your favor....

    got a Duron 1300 myself which has been lasting for quite a while now, which still serves as my main desktop. Put in some extra memory in the meantime to help out when doing lots of things at the same time, as well as some extra memory harddisk space(ain't broadband a bitch? ;-). Thinking about demoting it to a server atm, but in fact it still happily chugs along...

    heh, just like that "jury of equals" won't be influenced by how someone looks...there've been tons of studies, and certain looks just appeal more to people. to name an example, if for some reason I wear a suit, all of a sudden I get remarks from people about how smart I look this, and how I should dress more often that. These are people who know me quite well, yet somehow they perceive me differently because I wear a suit and tie. Imagine what it's like when dealing with a total stranger.

    In any complex system, I'd doubt that even the gods could work on it. Some days to me, it seems that programming isn't a science, but a random walk. Some changes screw things up, and the program won't even run after they're implemented. Others make the whole program work quicker and more efficiently. What we do is get rid of the bad changes and add the good ones.

    Sounds like evolution to me...

    kidding right? take your average pc-savvy kid without enough allowance. he downloads using emule, finds out he needs a patch, rendering the crack delivered with the iso's useless, hops over to astalavista, finds a "crack" and voila, there ya go. Besides, just using a badly patched IE is more than sufficient to get infested right up to your ears... ...hold on a second... ...you're a troll right?... ...oh what the heck, it's friday afternoon, if me biting makes you happy, so be it...

    Largely due to them being on company Win2k boxes surfing the web while they should be doing work...

    If one were to draw statistics from my own personal surfing behaviour, /. would likely say I use IE about 80% of the time...guess I have better stuff to do than read /. when at home *ducks for cover*

    heh, he's likely referring to the sound problems back in the days when using an SB Live on a VIA KT133. In fact, the pc I'm typing this on right now has that configuration and yes, sound quality isn't exactly spectacular. Then again, we're talking cheapass junk hardware here, so hardly cause for a fuss...

    Farscape: too complicated for Americans. No easy way to say who's the good guys and who's the bad guys. Scorpy's a bad guy, but somehow he's funny and just trying to do what he think's right. Meanwhile Moya's shipmates chop off one of pilot's arms. Ouch, so much for the good guys. No heroic Bruce Willis fighting for the flag and apple pie while asking God to look after his fallen comrades. Waaaaaay too much grey area. Besides, everyone knows only terrorists would try to find a way to make wormholes.

    There's the big difference, knocking *on* or knocking *in*. The first is silly, perhaps obnoxious and if it keeps happening perhaps even warrant for someone to be picked up by the friendly people in the nice shiny car with the flashy thingies on the top. The second is cause for concern.

    As for all these statistics, someone look up how many people get shot in Switzerland per year as opposed to the States. After all, those guys *have* to have a gun in the house and know how to use it...yet I never seem to hear horror stories about the Swiss going insane and killing each other in the streets...

    that's the good part, you don't have to, at least not over here(the Netherlands). Since it is the responsibility of the individual to register their address with the city the collector can simply send their mail to that address. If the person doesn't actually live there that's not their problem. As long as at least 1 letter is sent every 2 years the debt remains active.

    As for the whole "it got lost in the mail" excuse. Well, that shit simply doesn't fly. Trying that on a judge(should the individual choose to pursue that route and fight the debt) will likely get one laughed right out of court.

    Tis little remarks like that really give the OSS thing this lovely mature feeling. The time a windows computer would crash if you touched the mouse during a cd-burn is only, like, oh, somewhere end of last century? As much as I love the whole OSS scene, it's little remarks like this that really get people fuming...

    sorry, make that "unmarried teen pregnancies". as for abortion, kidding right? they never even have the choice as to whether or not they actually refuse to, the community does that for them. ofcourse the fact that the local owner of the drugstore is a cousin of the wife of the nephew of whoever happens to be running the local church doesn't help either when a youngun tries to acquire means to avoid pregnancies/scary diseases. still, fact remains, due to the fact that everything related to sex is completely taboo and not to be spoken about, kids are terribly curious as to what this thing is they've heard about and can't wait to go ahead and experiment with it, without knowing all the funky stuff that can happen if you do it *wrong*. myself, i got very extensive sexual eduction at school when i was, oh, i must have been 13 or something. they didn't just point at the various parts and explained what they were for, but they also quite openly discussed a lot of cultural issues surrounding sex, including the fact that ideally it's a two-way thing, and that us guys may think that a 5 minute wham-bam-thank you ma'am is a good thing, but that the ladies may think otherwise. kids will experiment with sex anyway, they might as well know what they're doing.
