And does it matter? I think the entire debate falls into the "what is less evil" category, rather than "what is good". I think I have better things to think about.
Other posters have already pointed out the specific problems with what you wrote, but what bugs me more about this post, and the thousands more like it, on just about any story dealing with any scientific topic, is the inherent assumption that some random dude on/. has seen an obvious logical hole that the people whose job it is to study the subject every day for years have missed, usually based on said random/.er's half-remembered high school "science class" or undergrad Physics 101 class. Now, this is certainly possible--in all fields, amateurs sometimes see things that the professionals miss--but it's really not the way to bet.
Never mind that. There isn't even any air in space. What are they going to breath on this asteroid? Nice try NASA. What a bunch of dummies.
Games are an activity that you can play solo, so perhaps socially isolated children resort to videogames. Being socially isolated is a symptom (cause?) of emotional issues. This does not mean that healthy people cannot play games. Its the old correlation does not imply causation. There may be a connection, but the danger is that videogames will make a handy scapegoat regardless.
You may argue that making guns harder to get, like here, reduces this kind of thing. That may be correct. But no matter what, people can get anything, and they will, if sufficiently demented, do something bad.
What's the answer to that?
I would say reducing this type of thing is a good start. Of course you can never entirely eliminate bad things from happening. To say so is naive. But yes, I would definitely say that less shootings is a good thing, and that is the aim of gun control in general.
Is he a genius because of the shape of his brain? Or is the shape of his brain the result of a lifelong pursuit of the intellectual? It's like saying someone lifts weights because they have overdeveloped muscles.
Wait until 5 years from now, when Ubuntu usurps Windows... To be clear I don't think that is idle speculation either. Linux is the superior OS (ie not bloated and, well, we are talking Ubuntu, so not as ad ridden), but for the longest time is has lacked the slick packaging and support, and "ease of use" to draw in the common man. Linux purists dislike Ubuntu, but if Microsoft fails with Windows 8 and Surface, there will be a huge opportunity for growth in the OS world.
Agreed. I am trying to think of a downside, I really am, and there are maybe one or two legitimate ones, but seriously. This is a great opportunity for talented people to get involved. And if they screw it up, meh, so what? Have we lost something? Did the Star Wars Christmas Special, or the Ewoks and Droids Adventure Hour ruin Star Wars forever for everyone? The saga has already survived a deluge of bad handling, and it still resonates with people. A little more won't matter.
I would agree that there should be a basic understanding, but really, most of what you need to know for daily life could be done in a month or two at most freeing up time for other subjects.
This ban has nothing to do with second hand smoke. It's intended to reduce insurance and disability costs for the employer.
End of thread. Its not a big brother thing, not a conspiracy, or someone trying to control everyone. As with nearly everything, its saving money perceived as heavy-handed bureaucratic nefariousness. But the reality is they are trying to save a buck by riding the current anti-smoking wave. It is hardly the moral high ground, but in reality it's a business decision.
its your attitude, if you don't mind my saying. I'm finishing my CS degree at 38 and then on to my masters, at or near the top of my class. Not to brag, but I can because I believe I can, 100%. You can learn new skills if you believe you can, it is as simple as that. Its not that being older means being less capable, but it generally means you have spent more time getting in a comfortable rut that you don't actually want to leave. But it is 100% mental. You are still capable. Frankly I love when people tell me I can't, or I am too old; it drives me.
Haven't you ever been using Windows or OSX and thought "This is so frustrating, if only I could change X!"? Well with Linux, you can.
Windows or OSX is like leasing your computer through Apple or Microsoft. Sure, you can do stuff, but only with their permission. With Linux you finally own your computer and can do anything you like with it or to it.
Fundamentally on the money.
If you are a parent you have a duty to not feed your kids crap and then sit them in front of the TV. And yes, I am a parent, and yes, it can be hard, but that is no excuse to fail your kids. This generation is saddling their kids with poor nutrition and exercise habits that will haunt them for life. Cancel your cable, take them to the park, make McD's a rarity.
I've eaten fast food. On average it costs $20 for my entire family to eat crappy tasting food. Unless you are eating prime rib, groceries are cheaper.
I am being harsh, but these kids don't make the choices, and there are far too many obese children around.
Imagine if Henry Ford had had Apples lawyers. All other vehicles would have to have 5 wheels, or perhaps 3. Perhaps he could get a patent on the windshield as well. Other cars would have to innovate. Perhaps steel bars? A piece of very thin wood?
Who was the first toaster manufacturer to think of rounded corners? Maybe Apple could lend them their lawyers. My toaster looks like every other toaster, how can that be fair?
I was starting to think I was the only one who felt that way. OSX is a flashy and expensive trip down mediocrity lane.I don't get why all the hype. Linux Mint is a bit buggy on my Mac, but it is still preferable to the perpetually spinning beach ball.
Yeah you should stop learning. In the middle of your career, the return on investment is going to be weak. You only have about 40-ish years of good work in you (assuming you don't encounter issues with age-discrimination). It's one thing to learn on your own in the context of your job/career or personal time. It's another thing to invest time and money in a further formal education that is only going to provide so much return.
What are you going to do, go be a 45 or 50 year old entering a new path? Right. That'll be taken seriously.
There is no shortage of people who are ready to tell you what can't (or shouldn't) be done. If it is something you want to do and feel strongly about, do it. Every great mind in history, and everyone who ever did something worthwhile had to hear and ignore the naysayers.
On the other hand, avoiding patent controversy keeps the stock prices high. Sure, one little girl loses the ability to communicate with her family, but Apple execs can can afford to install that second hot tub. You see the predicament they are in.
There's a bright side, it does ease my anxiety over world overpopulation. Why wait for a pandemic to stabilize our population? Lets do it the fun way, with more porn and videogames!
On a side note, it would seem pornstars are the exception, as they are actually having more sex, not less.
Nice. I am 38 and will finish my CS degree by January. I didn't go back because I put a lot of stock in trends, I went back to find a fulfilling career that I enjoy and bullocks to the trends. You can look at data for any career and try and stir up fear and uncertainty. Just do what you love and ignore the skittish attitudes who jump at every shadow.
to sign a petition?

I am patenting a horizontal hand gesture, any direction within 30 degrees of the horizontal axis. I am tentatively calling it the "wave" or "waving".

Like co-op at Foxconn!!

Not to mention they advertise their every move on Facebook or Twitter

Somehow I always knew it would end in a wave of disgruntled hipsters.
I do it with a macbook air.
The hardware is nice, but OSX is terrible.

They took down some websites? It must be complete anarchy over there. A total breakdown of moral order. Its tough but fair. Well played Anonymous.
Every time I hear the words "swimming pool" I beat a rich person. Its society's fault.
