I watched the XFL, mostly since I was curious about the whole thing. I watched alot of NFL over the years and have grown tired of it -- people sitting out because they broke a nail, or they're having their period.
I turned on the XFL and watched the NY/NJ v. LV game with sheer glee. It was the most interesting game I've seen in a long time. Sure, they looked like a bunch of amateurs out there, but that's the whole thing. They're living out their dream -- playing on a professional team.
Who wouldn't love scoring a touchdown with 10 million people seeing you do it? These men finally have that chance.
Even if it lasts one season, the men of the XFL get their minimum guaranteed '15 minutes of fame.' I wish it lasts more than one season.
As my last point, let me say that after watching XFL this first weekend, I bought season tickets for my home stadium. No domes, no astroturf.
And players who don't have their head up their ass.
I'm going to agree with this post. The Tech Workers of America (can we use TWA now that the airline is nearly defunct?) won't ever get off the ground.
I was able to get a $150,000+ job by myself on my own merits. A Union would only dilute my ability into a general pool of dumb, protect the stupid (God knows there's a million of them out playing techies in the workplace), and take dues out of my paycheck, rather than concentrate it in my pocketbook.
Why do you think they are pushing so hard? They know that people will want it after seeing true digital from start to finish high definition video for 10 seconds.
I saw it for 10 seconds and realized that replacing my 61" television with what I saw, in addition to shelling out 3-4x as much dough was not worth it.
I watch TV... yes alot. That's why I have a 61" television. But after seeing HDTV, I'm still not sold. Looks like it's nothing more than a shakedown by the corporations to get thousands of my dollars before my old television wears out.
Broadcast tv does some useful stuff, like telling people where to vote, what the weather will be, and where the traffic jams are. Many of these people don't have the time or the resources to look anywhere else. Usually, even the poorest family has access to a tv set, not the internet or even the newspaper.
Not to mention it's much faster to switch the TV on than it is to go to a computer.
When I'm showering in the morning, I can listen to the weather, traffic and news on the TV... if I use my computer in the shower, all it will do is shock and kill me.

I didn't want to program. Personally, I hate it. Some people like it, some people get off on it. I didn't.
If one day you aspire to be management personnel, making decisions, etc., go toward CIS. Get your MBA one day, and really learn what makes companies work. With CIS degree in hand, two years of practical programming (mostly C), 6 years of Unix experience, I landed a 6-figure job (+stock, big deal) a month before graduation.
The Slashdot Populous tends to have this disdain for management. A CIS degree is not a cookie cutter degree. What it trains you to do is different, true.
Management vs. Programmer... you decide for yourself.
From where I sit, GOOD IT managers are few and very far between. It sounds like you're a pretty grounded individual and the uppers know it.
We all wish we could have good managers, but we don't want the job to be a good manager to others. God forbid we actually try to help our fellow techie.
Sounds like the typical cliche comes into play here -- if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
If you want to be a grunt and keep answering to a manager that's one rung up on a Box of Hair on the evolutionary ladder, fine, and stop your whining. If you actually want to make a difference, do something and stop your whining. Either way you're going to cry foul, I believe.
The people who are going to abuse the EULA are going to abuse it and probably won't read it. Those who aren't going to abuse it won't abuse it and probably don't even read it.
Pretty much the same thing with banning (INSERT SOMETHING HERE -- EULA, guns, DVD copy protection, SDMI) here in the States... it will always find the way into the hands of the criminals and people hell bent on getting the result they sought.
The honest people just will be in the fucked-over group.
When it boils right down to it, the ubiquitous parties interested in the commercialism of softwares for lucrative returns or rewards will just be that far better in the future as there is nothing, notwithstanding catastrophic failure of the economic model.
I'd have to agree...
The number of idiots the schools are churning out are alarming. Can't even find their home city or state on a US map. Usually can't find Canada on a world map.
Jay Leno does some sort of Ask the Idiot on the street once in a while. People find it funny. I find it sad that 20-30 year olds think Mexico is a state.
Ask the average slashdot user -- the 16 year-old. They'll tell you their class is an idiot garden.
How about this approach:
Instead of people bitching about it, actually do something about it.
Revolutions aren't the answer anymore. People with more money and more weapons will always win.
Sorry, Jon, you don't know much about football.

Never underestimate the bandwidth achieved by a stationwagon full of DLTs travelling down the interstate.
OK...
If you're walking down a PUBLIC STREET including IN FRONT OF BUBBA'S HOUSE, how would you feel if he put his fat cock in your cakehole?
You know, it's Bubba's right to manipulate anything walking over PUBLIC PROPERTY that his TAXES paid for however he wants.
I guess it's not stealing then, right?

Thank goodness I have Air Conditioning in my car and my house!
One of man's greatest inventions, that's for sure... right behind gasoline.

A co-worker of mine has had a chair with a vertical keyboard attachment for at least the past 4 years.
At first I thought he manufactured it himself, but according to him, he bought it from a place online.
I'm not interested in finding it right now though. I still hate split-ergonomic keyboards. I like my $10 cheapy one that's lasted for 7 years.

I refused to sign. Period.
I asked they void it out. They asked me what time period would be fair. I said no time would be fair.
In the end they were generous to lower it from 2 years to 24 hours.
So if I leave or asked to leave, I can't work for 24 hours thereafter. I guess that's fair enough.
does this mean I should put my foot where it belongs? That is, right up your ass your intolerant fuck?
If you don't like a topic, don't read it. Or is there someone with a thumb up your ass forcing you to suck dick, drink blood and read slashdot...

Want to program? Stick it out in CS.

If you're dialing a local number, technically you only have to dial 7 digits.
They're complaining they'll have to know the area code.
I'm an American saddened by the whole lot of lazy, whining americans. Big deal. TEN DIGITS! OH NO MISTER BILL! WE CAN'T HAVE THAT!
These people are so disenchanted with everything they'll complain about winning the lottery -- since they have to pay taxes of course!
I say fuck 'em and move right into 12 digit dialing.

Go to China and then come back. You'll see how good 'we' have it here in the United States.
