Sigh... I wish the fsf hadn't written this for two reasons:
    1) it's half-cocked. hardware acceleration for vp8 does not exist yet, and google would still need a massive transcode of its youtube database to any other format.
    2) i fear this does more harm than good - google is LESS likely to free vp8 under an mit style license now because they don't want to seem like they did it because of the fsf.

basically i just wish the fsf would go away in favor of some people with less black and white views about encouraging software freedom, and a little more tact and saavy (who the fuck came up with the name "bad vista"??? sounds like the work of a 6 year old)

Do you know that? No, you don't - that's FUD. MPEG-LA just said they can only promise free use of MPEG4 for the grace period. They have said nothing about what will happen thereafter, but it seems unlikely they would charge for it unless typical usage changed very significantly.

Have you written code that runs on more than one platform? It's a real headache, and the headache goes up exponentially as the number of systems do. By focusing on one platform, they have the ability to use their resources to innovate and not just port. People using FAST ESP don't care what OS it's running on - just buy a windows machine for it if you don't have one. And who wants to run MS code on a linux/unix box these days anyway?

350MB of space, while perhaps 15% of a default ubuntu install, really isn't that much altogether. And as someone who's installed UNR a number of times, it is easy to convert an iso to a bootable USB stick using netbootin, etc.

Perhaps it would make sense to pare the installation down to a oo-minimal package or something, but in my mind ubuntu just lost a big advantage over ChromeOS.

Openoffice takes about 350MB of space, so it is a significant proportion of an ubuntu install, but c'mon. Despite the name "netbook", these devices in my experience spend a significant amount of time offline. This conspiracy theory is half baked. Google's core business is search. And based on what we've seen from the Nexus One so far, apple has nothing to fear whatsoever from google in the mobile phone market. The Nexus One hardware is nice, but the software is crap. It's not even remotely a threat to apple's iPhone market. And don't forget that apple sells computers and mp3 players too. This is not enough for apple to ally with Microsoft. They tried that once before, and they got IE for mac out of it. They've learned from that mistake.
