Personally, I still want to see financial institutions implement a system where you can get trojan account numbers to give to the phishers that appear just like real numbers. If the phisher uses them, immediately the institution knows to look for fraudulent activity from that source.
One of my ATM cards has 2 different pin numbers. If I use the alternative one, the transaction is completed normally (so no one on the spot gets wiser), but the institution will flag it and notify the police at once, providing my identity and location. I have to pay a little extra for eat (about US$ 3/month), but it is well worth it. It is considered (and marketed as) an insurance. I have this since 1996, and I'm happy to say I never needed.
So yes, the banks know this kind of thing can be done. I wonder why other institutions don't do it or even why this is not mandatory for all cards.
I really don't mind the extra US$ 3/month for this service.
Perhaps in the future when 50" plasma screens are the standard I'll reconsider, but most movies aren't make or break based on being HD.
You see, that is something I just don't get, and you are making a good point.
How good the image of a movie is is very low on my list of priorities. I want a good story. Good actors, good acting. Some nice editing. In other words, the "human" part of movie making. And those things are each day more rare.
My point is that the premise being fake or true isn't relevant here. Take CFC for instance. How long does it take for a CFC molecule to break an ozone molecule ? It might not be as fast as most people think. But I digress.
My main point is just because some fact is true, doesn't mean the presentation of the facts is.
So who is to blame ? The big corps ? The media ?
Take this article for example. So the helium reserves will end. What does that really indicates ? That you will run out of helium ? That the price will go up ? How hard is to get more helium ?
Answering your question directing: if someone is making money of something, it ALWAYS deserve a better examination. It might not be fake, but the way it is presented could be.
This is not a general advice but, for your particularly piece of software, what I would do is to publish some good, professional manuals and documentation, and sell those.
If it is geared toward final users, that is the way to go, IMHO. If it is geared toward institutions, you might do well selling support.
Hum ? Who said anything about morality being wrong, or living without morality ? Please, try to read a post before replying.
Since you are saying morality is absolute, care to prove your theory ? Where does it comes from ? If it is absolute, it should be easy to define. Please point to where we can find a list of things that are absolutely moral and immoral.
Physics and math are absolute. They are valid anywhere and everywhere. Is a given moral rule or value valid everywhere on the planet ? For all countries and all people ? Again, please show me your reference.
Morality is based on values and, as you said yourself, society define values.
Of course it does. Morality is not something engraved in stone tablets. It is something defined by society. Is having sex under 18 moral ? Is drinking beer ? How about eating pork ? Owning a gun ? Morality is ONLY defined by the society.
There are many reason (that have nothing to do with morality) why slavery is not a good idea. Same about many other "morality" related issues. Many times, morality is just a guise, and there are other reasons. The same applies about copyright. I'm sure most/.ers agree with limited term copyright. Copyright is not about morality. It has a use. These days, we keep seeing it being abused.

I still use TeX often, even today. Actually, I started learning TeX about 5 years ago, after most people migrated to some other GUI editors.
One of the things I like better about TeX is how easy it is to automatically generate professional looking reports. Collecting data from systems, consolidating them, and then generating a professional looking report I can send to my clients is all automated these days, thanks to using TeX.
The sleep test for apnea is very different than a dream related test.
I know he didn't state he was unable to ever reach REM state, but it seems you chose to interpret it that way. Also, you will see he stated he did have "occasional odd dreams".
Dream doesn't happen exclusively during REM. Yes, deep, vivid dreaming happens during REM, but that is different. A dream related study, using an EEG, will show altered brainwave patterns during 3 of the 4 sleeping states. Btw, it is very rare for people to remember dreams they had outside REM sleep, but they can be measured and, sometimes, remembered.
Having a sleep disorder myself, and a few other cases on my family, I had some contact with the subject. Thus, I can state that the GP do have some information on the subject, but there have been several new data discovered, compiled and collected about sleep and dreams on the past few years that I really recommend before drawing conclusions.
The funny part is some of us *don't* dream. Seriously.
Just because you don't remember them, doesn't mean you don't dream.
Disregarding some very rare cases (related to illnesses, specially mental), everyone dreams. If you don't think you do, go to one of those sleep study centers and book yourself for the night.
You saying some people don't dream is like me saying airplanes don't crash. Well, I never was in a crash, and never saw one, so obviously, since it don't have a direct sensory impression, it doesn't happen.
Wasn't there something about the original formula being EL=mc^2, and that after a time, they discovered that L was always 1 ? I think I read about it somewhere, but I'm not sure how reliable that source was (if I could remember the source).
If that is really the case, I think it is a good example for the gp.
While I agree with part of what you wrote, I can't agree with all of it.
There are observable evolutionary changes. But I do agree with you that, at this point, it is less of a contributing factor than the sum of human knowledge.
Again, I don't agree with you that intellectual property should be banished. However, the current system is, for the lack of a better word, stupid. Eating an egg is eating and egg, no matter from which side you start. Also, you can't compare the "way to make a quick buck on the internet" IP with "way to cure a deadly disease" IP. And, first and foremost, we have to remember we are dealing with humans on both ends of the scale. From a point of view of a patient that is dying of a rare disease, the research on what ails him is more important than on a more common disease that causes blindness. The same way labs will research what will give them more money.
It is all the same thing. Call it greed, self interest, human nature. Like it or not. It is a fact, and unless people deal with fact, things don't work.
There's gotta be some way to bind a balancing point. Something what will serve the needs of the whole, while keeping the parts motivated. Probably something that is bad for everyone, as most compromises are. I don't know what it is. I don't think anyone here on/. knows either. Most proposals I've seem are simply stupid, radical and/or based on ideologies. Maybe someday we will have one that works. We can, after all, still hope.
is it really so strange that two people with have the same idea, given that they have the same technology, the same lack in technology, etc...?
Actually, no. There is always a relationship somewhere. All technologies these days (and for the past decades, or maybe centuries) is based on something previously in existence, be it a technology, ideas, concepts etc.
Also, you are correct the lack in technology is a great factor. Most creations are made to solve a given problem already in existence. You can see it on the F/OSS movement: scratching your own itch, I think they call it.
The problem is there are always too many things to consider, so a correct historical analyzes is usually not possible. Historical researchers can only do so much.
I don't own a ebook dedicated reader, but I go buy ebooks for my laptop and my smartphone. I mostly dead with PDF and Mobipocket formats, and BOTH support DRM-free books.
Actually, you even get a software where you can convert your PDF/HTML/whatever to Mobipocket format, for free.
I like the fact that the devices offer BOTH options (DRM and DRM-free). Now, it is time to check for shops that offer what you want (DRM-free), or even places like Project Gutenberg (have I a few ebooks from there on my nokia right now).
I have said this before, but I really find "enforced freedom" a contradiction. So as long as my device supports DRM-free content, I don't have a problem with it also supporting DRM.
Actually, I do use Mobipocket on my smartphone (Nokia E62). I have been converting PDF and HTML files to it, and I never lost a single hyperlink (be it intra-document, or web).
So far, Mobipocket is serving better than PDF in terms of portability between devices.
The lasting effect of the Bush Administration will be a weakening of the rights of citizens.
I would go even farther than that. It is impressive how much political profit this administration squeezed from the whole terrorist idea (11/9 included). Would it have been reelected otherwise ? What about all the other stuff that keep happening (and happens on every government, worldwide), but because of the "terrorist idea" they manage to keep low profile ?
I'm extremely suspicious of any government that profits (money, power, take your pick) from this kind of situation. Unfortunately, this is pretty much the rule everywhere.
Maybe it is just me, but I would be pretty frustrated doing the same thing for 13 years. Moving jobs/positions is a good way to find new enjoyable things to do. We sometimes get too lazy and comfortable, and forget that the PURSUIT of happiness is a very important thing. And you can't pursuit it if you just stay seated and do nothing.
Ok, let me get this straight. You are saying that a creationist joke is a "religion bashing" post ? Humm, since when creationism is a religion ? You could stretch it and say it is a philosophy, at most. And unless you have lived in a cave for the past decade or so, you should be able to spot in 2 seconds or less what was the target of that joke.
Creationist is NOT endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church. Can we even find a single Archbishop or Cardinal that subscribes to creationist ?
But hey, maybe you thinking making a Jim Jones joke is also "religion bashing". After all, wasn't he the leader of a "religion" ? [Whatever-deity-you-believe-in] save us from Scientology joke too.
I'm sorry, but I have to wonder what your reaction would be upon hearing a catholic priest making a religion joke, which I have heard, more than once.

Just for reference, Brazil currently has 27 registered political parties.
They do. That was the "self destruct" failsafe.
You are right. I only wish it was possible for parents, you know, take away the kids computer privileges (or the computer itself).
Too bad it is impossible.

Exact.
Do you have any idea how much money some on the industry made with the whole replacement of CFC with other propellants business ?
