Women don't need to be "let" into the IT field. They already are. They just don't WANT to be in IT. How the hell are we supposed to raise the number of women in IT if they themselves couldn't be bothered?
It is however very easy to critisize a company for DRM that can be easily avoided by ripping your own CDs if you simply want to be a drama queen.
Professing the end of the world as we know it is an honored pastime on Slashdot afterall....
"Oh noes! Apple sells DRM'd music! Nevermind that most iPod owners don't buy iTMS tracks and instead rip their own CDs, lets continue to make a big deal out of it anyway, oh noes!"
Child prostitution is such a problem in Asia that Bill Clinton had to sign into US law new legislation making it a crime for an American over the age of 18 going to another country to have sex with that nation's kids, even if that nation legally allowed it to happen. THATS how bad it is over there in Asia.
When was the last time an Asian leader had to create laws forbidding asian men from coming to the US for our children?
Oh yeah thats right they didn't have to because the West doesn't make our children available for your men the way Asia makes its children available for our men.
Whoever modded this comment INSIGHTFUL was misguided. Look, Apple is NOT Verizon. Yes they both want to make gobs of money but only one of those companies TRULY cares about designing great user interfaces and experiences for their products and actually knows how to do it and has a long track record of doing it and it sure as hell is NOT Verizon!
There HAVE been high rates of smartphone returns from people who don't know how to use or remove the third party apps they have installed. No cell phone company wants this. What Apple brought to Cingular is something all the telcos would love to get....simplicity.
Apple isn't abandoning the Mac. Steve made a desicion a few years ago to not announce everything at MacWorlds anymore. They have many events spread out the entire year to keep people interested. MacWorld only comes once a year you know.
What planet are you on where the 1G iPod didn't fly off the shelves? Is it the world where Spiderman's Gwen Stacy is still alive? If so tell that broad that she owes me $25 for that AP chemistry book she borrowed from me.
If The Question knew that people were discussing who is going replace him, he'd become even more paranoid then he already is, which might not seem possible till you show him your post then oh boy watch out!
To date, has Freescale completed the PWRficient and offered it for sale? Can a company call them up today and buy it right now?
Also all of this (if deliverable) would be great and everything but it would also negate the ability to virtualize easily other x86 OS's such as Windows and x86 Linux. I think this had just as much to do with the switch as the lack of progress by the PPC vendors.
Plus, Intel and AMD are focused on making chips for computers. Freescale and IBM aren't nearly as focused on the personal computer market CPU wise and it shows. I'm guessing Apple just got tired of it.
Double Plus, from a marketing perspective (in addition to the one stated above re virtualization) Apple probably got tired trying to explain to folks how PPC speeds were equivalent to x86 speeds.
What do you mean by "support an extra architecture", by the way?
This of course assuming the PWRficient ever actually gets made. The PPC architecture is full of promises of amazing products that never actually see the light of day.
They're not just paid salaries. They get profit sharing. There's no way the best scientists have to make do on a mere salary unless that salary is in the millions.
A lot of scientists absolutely are motivated by profit. And profit happens to be the best way to allocate talent by encouraging the best to step up and try. Those who can't hack it in corporate labs SETTLE for government labs.
Socialism just doesn't work. Quit trying to apply it to the medical industry.
Government get its money from taxation which can only come from economic activity. Unless you can think of some type of economic system where money can be created without trade then we're stuck with what we've got....which happens to be better than anything else available.
There's one thing you can say about cold, callous bastards, they don't suck off the public teat. You'll never find one on welfare, they can pull their own weight.
Can we all wake up from your holier than thou utopian ideals now?
Profit is incredibly important. Without it so much simply will not get done. There simply aren't enough altruistic beings on this planet to run an economy on charity alone. From the pool of brilliant scientists and doctors you have maybe 20% who do it just because they like helping others. That leaves the other 80% who are in it for the money. So you want to remove the motivations for 80% of our scientific grey matter? What sense does that make?
Over time the costs of drugs comes down as generics are made available. Either those countries can wait for that to happen or they can steal them now and pay us back later after our armies show up on their doorstep to collect the payment due.
Either way works pretty well.
As for the inventor, how do you know that they did not go to private school? That they did not buy their own materials? And who gets free food for life? Its quite possible that the inventor's family paid for all of those things in which case he'd owe society BUPKISS, NADA, GOOSE EGG in return.
Ahhh but you forgot the Ultimate-Counter-Argument which is:
You (being Headcase88) stop being an asshat and just spend the gift card at Starbucks after you come down from your holier-than-thou hippie rage and realize that Starbucks is NOT evil incarnate, rather its just a very large company that sells coffee and in your hand is a card that will let you get some free stuff from them.
Think about what you just said. So coffee should be served only by people who have no retirement plans, no healthcare and next to no opportunities for advancement? And you think you're taking the high road by being against a suit? By promoting mom and pop coffee houses you're basically advocating for indentured servitude or slavery!
How exactly are you better than the suits again? Or even near their level?
Don't kid yourself. Very few people are capable of successfully running their own business. Then there's the question of what would happen to the economy if everyone was their own boss and none of those bosses could get anyone to work for them because everyone was too busy being their own boss...

Credit Card security has to be done by the banks otherwise it'll take too long per transaction for the retailers to do it. I don't want to wait longer in line for some store to run thru whatever authorization system they may have come up with. Plus there's a lot less banks then there are retailers out there which means there would be an order of magnitude more systems to choose from if retailers handled it. It would be chaos. And for what gain? The small number of people who travel as often as you do? Besides, banks are the only ones with your complete transaction history. How is a retailer going to have access to that? Its not even their right to have access to that information.
As for government failing....I didn't realize our government had failed. Is someone flying another flag over DC? Government isn't meant to do everything but what it does do it happens to do very well because no one else can do it better (or even as good.) The occasional bone-headed administration can't be helped however.
Hey idiot,
Women don't need to be "let" into the IT field. They already are. They just don't WANT to be in IT. How the hell are we supposed to raise the number of women in IT if they themselves couldn't be bothered?
Why are you so angry?
Because the iPhone is an iPod. Its music functionality will be the same as an iPod's.

Right.
Trolltech's marketing prowess just puts Apple's to shame everyday.
I mean I see Trolltech ads on busses, trains, newspapers, TV all the time.
Oh yeah the Greenphone is just going to outsell the iPhone by leaps and bounds.
NOT.
*sigh*

The Apple Stores use Macs for their Point of Sale systems. They work just fine and handle very high volumes.

Well answer the question.
Do you care?
And in light of your "modification" of my original question I'll ask you do you really expect to get something that is so hard to make for free?

Just to be fair, bicyclists deserve to get the shit beat out of them.
They're always whining about their right of way and always getting in the way of automobile traffic.
Soo annoying. I can't hit enough of them.
With my car.

Perhaps you've heard the Reality Oath?
"To make as much money as one possibly can, in hopes of not falling too far behind the Joneses."
Do you really care what a doctor's motivations were as long as they make a cure or treatment for something as fast as they possibly can?
Whats wrong with homogenizing America? Are you saying you're too good to be JUST LIKE ME?
Snob.
