I have grown up. Its time for software engineers, programmers, program developers whatever the fairies want to call themselves to grow up.
EVERY other type of engineer has to go thru some sort of a certifying process to instill the base levels of competence except for software engineers. Its ridiculous. And we're supposed to just put up with it.
I'm not asking for programmers to be perfect. But to earn anything over $20 an hour for creating the type of software we all use today is a crime in my mind. From Windows to Mozilla to Real Player to Adobe Acrobat, to corporate web apps such as online banking software IT SUCKS.
It all sucks. There's no excuse, no fucking excuse. Building bridges is hard. But its done right. Building planes is hard but its done right. Wiring homes, constructing sewer systems....etc its ALL HARD but it gets done the proper way. Otherwise people don't get paid or at the very least are sued for their money back. But software engineers? The little princes who sit in cubicles and think their fecal matter smells pleasant because they type on friggin keyboards...oh no critisize not these precious souls lest you rouse their ire! They just keep pumping out crap after crap after crap and hardly if ever suffer any negative consequences.
So now we're seeing a situation where people in another country are going to get paid 1/5th to 1/6th the salary as a US programmer to produce the same quality work and I AM GLAD. I can't wait until only the absolute cream of the crop western coders earn anything above $20/hour. Plumbers, carpenters, mechanics, chimney sweeps shall make more than you and somehow you fucks you losers who spent tens of thousands of dollars and 4 years of your life on a "Computer Science" degree will either have to accept your new lower wages or find another line of work and actually become GOOD AT SOMETHING for a change.
I know my comments have been sacriligeous here on Slashdot but I just can't pretend that the overwhelming majority of software produced today is very substandard.
Tech may or may not be hard but thats no excuse for the quality of the product sucking so much. If its going to suck we might as well not pay top dollar for it, hence outsourcing.
Everytime you encounter a bug in a program you use that ought to knock off a quarter from the hourly wage of US programmers. After a while you discover they SHOULDNT BE PAID AT ALL.
Being a "techie" never was and never will be a significant percentage of the population. As such why should any politicians devote any attention to techie issues?
How many customers are going to be using an OS other than Windows or Mac OS X? The folly of open source developers is that they think the number of people using their software is great enough to support commercial support.
The Neuros is huge, the iPod is small. You can use MP3's on both the iPod and the Neuros. Perhaps 1,000 people have significantly large enough Vorbis music collections to warrant an Ogg compatible player.
iPod wins.
Now as to why Apple users cheer the Open Source community its simple. With Apple we get the best of both worlds. The openess of free software with the polish of proprietary excellence. No wonder a lot of Linux/BSD folks have shelled out for iBooks and Powerbooks when they could have saved money and bought Dell Inspiron's and slapped Debian on them.
At the end of the day you want something that just works
Why should everone get a seat at the table? You don't honestly think every human being is equal to every other human do you? There are those who are born prettier than others, smarter than others, and stronger than others yet you would have these individuals share the same fate as the ugly, stupid and weak?
Merely existing grants you no rights in this world. You must fight and earn what you get. Bitching about "doling out cost savings evenly" is not going to make it happen. And lazy ass unions are your answer? Organizations that by nature and design stomp on the head of innovation and merit and reward idle seniority? Thank god union power is lessening in the west. The days of "I'm sorry but I can't do that task even though its perfectly within my capabilities because its against union shop rules" are coming to an end.
To follow up on my earlier response to your other post, oil is irrelevant. We will stop using oil long before the last wells run dry. Food production, already mindlessly easy (only 3% of the US population needs to farm to feed the other 97%) will continue to become more productive with better technology and bio-engineering.
By the way, there already IS a vibrant global culture. What makes you think that music, movies, books and travel are worth more or are better than shoes and cars?
Your assumption that the entire world could not sustain current western levels of consumption is incorrect.
Lets take wood and paper consumption for one example. There's a limited number of trees to be cut for houses and paper correct? That means once this limit is reached then long waiting times and higher prices must result correct? Well not exactly. Genetic engineering can produce faster growing trees for future generations.
Energy consumption. We're running out of fossil fuels right? Yes. This will be our downfall correct? No. All power generating technologies are improving as we go forward. The least of which are hybrid engines to cut down on oil consumption. Then there's the increasing efficiencies of solar and wind power and advances in geothermal and nuclear power.
I know the environmentalists want you and everyone else to believe that the Earth cannot sustain anymore people but its simply not true. There's no reason why this planet cannot sustain at least 30 billion human beings. Genetic engineering applied to agriculture will allow us to produce hyper-fast growing livestock and plant produce.
Foreign made cars both Asian and European are MORE EXPENSEIVE then domestic Ford, GM or quasi-domestic Chrysler yet people still shell out more money for a Toyota, Honda or Nissan why?
Because they don't break down as quickly as an American car will. Have you seen the rebates and cash back offers Ford and Chrysler and GM have to offer just to get people to walk onto the lots? Up to $4000 cash back thats how much. Do you think Toyota or Honda or Nissan have to offer that kind of cash back? They sure as hell do not.
Even citizens of the city of Detroit have embraced reality, most of the people living there do not drive domestic cars. What does that tell you? Not to mention that domestic cars consistently rank lower than foreign cars on both JD Power and Associates and Car and Driver reports.
I mean what kind of a dream world are you livng in? Have you seen the quality control that goes into an Asian automaker's factory? The high levels of productivity? It takes anywhere from a third to half the man hours for Toyota, Nissan and Honda to pump out a car than it does for GM, Ford and Chrysler not to mention the asian factories are modular and able to respond to market flucuations be changing the model of car they build instead of idling entire lines or even whole factories.
If you are still not convinced take a look at resale value. A domestic car is virtually worthless after 5 years because people expect so many damn problems with it they don't consider it worth buying. On the other hand try finding a cheap 10 year old Nissan Pathfinder. Those things are still around $5000+. 10 years old and its only lost 2/3rds of its value. Amazing.
Not everyone in this world is 3 or 2 dimensional. There actually are real life people who are 1 dimensional therefore representing them in literature should not be seen as a deficiency.
The abundance of abandond projects on Sourceforge would appear to disagree with you. Open Source projects are usually NOT the domain of hundreds and thousands of globally diverse developers but rather a very small and very active "core" team. Once that core team leaves (and I'm not talking about XFree86 here) then the project usually dies. Why? Because even though the code is in the public domain there is a lack of willingness to get involved or a lack of skill of those who ARE willing or a lack of time for those who are both skillfull AND willing.
1. There is still credible opposition to the theory that human activity has yet to alter the environment and if it has, for the worse.
2. You will attract more bees with honey instead of vinegar. Your holier-than-thou annoying environmentalist screed will help neither you nor the movement spread its ideals. Energy efficient products aren't worth a damn if they do not appeal enough to people to make them want to buy them.
Remember kiddies, just because an old book tells you its ok to do something (such as disapproving of Gays) that doesn't mean its right! Try to be more critical of what you read in the Bible.
Rent the movie Six Degrees of Separation and then review your judgement on Smith's acting abilities.

As anyone with a portfolio would know, it is hard work. And nothing refreshes you faster than arguing on Slashdot so you can get back to your portfolio and balance it like its never been balanced before.
Millions of Americans make commutes this long or even longer everyday.

A huge battery life draining screen. How Microsoftian....
Why haven't they gone out of business and returned the remaining money to the investors yet?
As opposed to being shuffled around the US to the lowest bidder?
You do know that Jaguar is owned by Ford right? Not to mention that Volvo's quality has gone down the tubes since Ford bought it as well.....

Humans and or primates? Pretty much ALL primates are able to have sex whenever they want to.
....culture would be the movie, Vulcano High.
Isn't it kind of stupid to kick out the guy who owns the domain?
Didn't shutting down the Censoreware site have something to do with that whacky stalker, Seth Finklestein?
