It isn't and won't be illegal to program. A few restrictions on what you can and cannot code does not outlaw programming in its entirety. Just because you won't be able to create software to help you pirate movies or songs does not mean the government has put an end to civilian programming completely.
Actually, its a more even well known fact that the average Slashdot user incorrectly assumes that because they are informed and aware of computer oriented issues that they have a greater IQ than that of the general public. They are, as are you, wrong.
You really need to get over yourself. Just because the average American doesn't want to buy smuggled components just to aid them in breaking the law (most likely uses for such equipment is pirating IP) does not make them sheep. It just makes them uninterested in your cause. Those who don't give a crap about your cause, whatever it may be, are not sheep.
It might sound popular to make those who chase the money sound like they are miserable but its not always true. There's nothing wrong with doing something only for the money. Some folks have actual after-work lives, therefore they don't have to love what they do. For them its just a job. If its a high paying enough job, they know they won't be doing it forever so its even better then anyway. Once they have reached their financial goals they will have completed their dreams and how could that make anyone miserable?
Sometimes I really wonder if we made the right choice in fighting against Hitler instead of fighting alongside with him. If only we had known at the time what a group of whinny useless fucks most of Europe would grow to become we would have figured out that the Third Riech was almost certainly an improvment for humanity as a whole.
That "reach" is what you earn. You reach what you earn. If you reach wealth, you earned it. If you reach poverty, you earned it. Why can't you make this connection?
Creating a society where stealing from anyone, even the rich, is looked upon as good harms everyone. It would simply eventually encourage the upwardly mobile to leave the area, or the nation if necessary and setup their lives in countries where the laws aren't so crazy. Not to mention it would demoralize entreprenurs and the truly innovative and hard working.
It all depends on the size of the bank. Very few folks know that about 3 banks in the US fail every year. They are just tiny ones. The big ones have assesets as high as $1 trillion and no lower than $300 billion. Thses corporate failures will hurt them surely, but they won't banrupt them. Furthermore the US Government has an unlimited amount of money via a Mandate from Heaven. Ok that last part was just a blatant lie but I just like saying Mandate from Heaven.
Yeah because the CEO of GE is in direct editorial control of what goes on the news broadcasts of NBC every night. Not like he has anything elst to do at that extremely large and diverse corporation.
Same goes for Disney which owns ABC and Viacom which owns CBS.

Do you honestly talk about those issues EVERY DAMN DAY? How about every other day? In my office I have a co-worker who talks about those issues every day and at first it was refreshing and enlightening. Now its just plain annoying at times. You really think people want to discuss global and political issues everyday? Its not fun you know. And yes fun is important. If its not an enjoyable activity then folks won't engage in it willingly. So please don't blame it on apathy or sheep like behaviour. Blame it on people not liking to talk and discuss issues that are boring and suck.
Get better eyes and ears perhaps?

Your nothing short of a moron if you think regional and local flavor is lost in the US. The United STATES is not in any way shape or form a uniform society. People in the south are different from northeners, coastal folks differ from heartland folks, then there's the ethnic differences, religious differences, political differences, sexual differences......etc. Just because there's a McDonalds in every state does not mean we're all the same.
