I was under the impression that the cards actually ran Linux...
Now, give me a PCI or PCI-X card that has three IP's. One to connect to from the localhost, two going out to other machines/routers/switches. Make that card a system on a chip that boot with power taken from the mainboard...
Let me login to that card and use the command line, SSH, whatever... now we are talking a $500 card. Linux on the card with the right packages installed will let me basically put a Cisco router in my machine...
But at $500, and running linux, it's like having a router in my PC. I could be wrong, but this allows me to make my media center PC a firewall and router... all kinds of stuff.
Not that I own a media center PC - but I suspect this type of thing will catch on with the geeks if they can login to it.
I think his point was that good consulting advise can not make up for bad management.
First thing I learned in school was that technology will make a failing business just fail faster. You must talk many people out of buying computers and getting "connected". This somewhat extends into pure technology markets like software or web presence building. No software company that has been around for years started with their best product. Some on this site would argue that Microsoft still misses the mark!
Look at the grandparent poster and you can learn what not to do in any business:
They spent millions, much of it on our programming fees,... We tried repeatedly to reign them in... and convince them to get a basic system live and build from there. They insisted on... rolling out from day one with ridiculous bleeding edge multimedia features that had nothing to do with their business model, before ever revealing the site.
You can even build a multi-national corporation on a shoe string if you get your name out there and your foot in the door of people's homes. Most businesses in the U.S. don't make a profit the first year. One reason is that they don't spend money on what they should, instead on things they think they need. Get your product out there, be courteous to your new customers and once you do that you can work from there. Amazon, FAIK, did everything on the cheap for years - had nothing really - and now they are huge.
Don't buy shit you don't need, focus on selling your idea even if your product isn't perfect. When it is, you tell them it's perfect!
don't mandate telcos to make 911 services universally available
Here in Cincinnati, we learned that you *must* mandate. We learned the hard way. The telco shut someone's service off and they couldn't call 911. That person had a child die in front of their eyes.
Then the law was changed so that every phone line must be able to reach 911 in this state. Hey, we here in Ohio don't like to see people die because they don't have a dime to call 911 or they let their phone bill go unpaid.
Sorry, but life is more important than all of this "business" to some people. You know, maybe Vonage/Time Warner cable/whoever shouldn't market their services as "phone lines". People think that VoIP will be able to dodge FCC line charges and other "taxes", but not forever. I say that if you want to call it a phone line, then treat it like a phone line. Sorry, but that includes 911 and the taxes that go along with it.
If the only reason you went to VoIP is because you wanted to skip over a few taxes then it wasn't worth it. On the other hand, the telco has no right to restrict access to government services, or even their own lines (that is why we broke up AT&T right?).
The racists will say "what do we use today", which is unfair because we never tried to listen. Even when Europeans went to Africa, they just took what they wanted and left.
"[VoIP] has ignited a fire under a stalled and depressed industry."
"It's probably the most significant paradigm shift in the entire history of modern communications, since the invention of the telephone,"
"If you're going to say to me that Voice over IP is something that needs regulation, then you're going to have to explain to me why e-mail isn't also, or streaming video or instant messaging is not also,"
Of course, we all know, Michael Powell stepped down and this new guy may not be as friendly.
What I wanted to find is the quote where Powell talks about downloading and installing Skype - he said that he saw a revolution in front of his eyes when the program started. (or something to that effect)
First, Africans have done plenty of things (brain surgery, useful and non-fatal) before any other collective of people did them. Their life before colonization was quite civilized, and in many cases the best in the Western world.
Of course, they didn't go out forcing everything on the world so things they "did for the world" is pretty low. But from my POV that is a good thing.
the first thing that came to mind was the extremely high birth rate, but that doesn't warrant anything of note.
That isn't even true! Racist trash... But assuming it is, Africans have produced the most genetically diverse population on the planet. If you know nothing about biology: this means that it give our species new hope in the face of biological terrors. I wouldn't expect you to understand, read a book.
Of course, starting the species is something of note. At least I'd say so.
it has been a long time since it was a source of mankind-advancing knowledge (at least since the Library of Alexander in Egypt was destroyed).
Hey!
Many things were invented or discovered in "dark Africa" before a bunch of honkeys ever did anything. But because Europeans didn't know - I guess that makes it backwards...
Get to know your African history (before the last 200-300 years) and you'd be suprised.
The only real difference is that now Windows will be able to run on Mac hardware
And this is why I think Linux will only win.
Once that nice Apple hardware rolls out the Linux crowd won't buy another x86 machine. Why should they? There already are enough Apple fans in the Linux camp - not a lot of Windows fans in the Apple camp.
Basically, development will be easier on standard (Apple) hardware and the ease of installation will grow. Dual boot OSX and Linux? Thank you Apple!
The sick part is that anti-virus software was standard when you bought a new PC (from major brands). Now, you've got to buy their subscription services to use them for more than 30 or 90 days.
Total rip-off considering Windows is just as insecure as ever and IE is the default web browser when you open the box.
I've always said, when a new version of Windows is coming out to buy Symantec stock as everyone has to rush out and buy all new versions of anti-virus. (Not that there isn't free alternatives, but it always happens)
What I don't get is the repeated offenders. If one project "makes good" they are still required to stop development/distribution of offensive software. If I take your source code and put it in my 1.0 series application and then finally release the code with my 2.0 series... I have no right to go onto develop the 3.0 series of the software.
Once you violate the GPL, you've lost all rights under the license. Maybe the FSF should spend a few of those donations they collect and sue a few of these scoundrels.
We don't want the government to give us health care, we either want them to reign in the cost *or* provide universal *insurance* coverage. It isn't even about using tax dollars, it's more about revoking the corporate charters of HMO companies or doing something about rising costs. I for one *demand* mental health parity, but last time someone did that they died in a plane crash. Of course, not supporting mental health parity in the private insurace sectors affects those without mental health problems (Crime rate. drug/alcohol use, homelessness, domestic violence... all lead to more crime thus costing the tax payer a bundle. Let's ignore the fact that those who aren't covered under private insurance are eligible for public services anyways...).
retirement
Well, we don't want old people to starve do we? You might, but I guess your political views demand that sort of thing...
education
As far back as education goes in America, it's been controlled by the states (and their governements). Private schools are one thing, but the government isn't taking those schools over, and never have. And to be brutally honest, public schools serve two purposes in America: to Americanize and Industrialize the young. Of course we don't think about those students who are second generation Americans... (see link at bottom)
freedom means freedom to fail
Yeah, I can see that point. But is that okay with most Americans? Considering 94% are said to be Christians I doubt it. Then again, what passes for Christianity now a days in America is appaling. I'm not a Xian, but let's be consistent. If "under God" stays in the pledge, the 10 commandments stay in courts and "in god we trust" stays on the dollar bill then welfare stays.
You are free to fail, but shouldn't there be a freedom to not fail as well? Is it fair that society should stack the deck against the weakest among us?
It's an interview with Lucas and was filmed before II and III... really helps you see what he is trying to do. I thought both movies (I & II) were "ok" but this makes you look a little deeper and realize that the vision did come to light.
If you are a Joseph Campbell fan, you'd get why the movies progress the way they do.

To geneticists, the fact that Africans are the most diverse (genetically speaking) makes them the most likely "original" source of the species.
Of course, this debate will never be settled because everyone wants to say the first man lived in his own back yard.
Who is really using Kazaa today?
No matter. That is what killed Kazaa in the first place. Of course they say there is no spyware in Kazaa 3.0.
This is exactly my point.
The racists will say "what do we use today", which is unfair because we never tried to listen. Even when Europeans went to Africa, they just took what they wanted and left.

This is the first time I've heard of it, but I've installed it already.
It's sad that this is what it takes to get the word out about some GPL products.
Good point... but someone needs to step up.
Maybe the FSF (or someone) should collect money on the behalf of those GPL coders who want to sue violators but can't do it on their own.
[[Aside: I wonder, how much GPL code found its way into OpenServer and UnixWare]]

why is this modded up? the links just go to a login screen.

I just wonder why people are using Wal-Mart of all places...
In that case, I'd sue Wal-Mart for holding *my* material.
