but anyway if the stuff is packed as components and Spices/Sauces things should not be to bad (but i would have one of the projects be growing herbs and such).

The best thing for Summer Homework is to do some prelim stuff to get things started now this should be weighted a small but non-trival amount on the Final Grade (and graded with the knowledge that this is before the class starts). The point is to keep the kid THINKING.
Personally i would have some sort of site where the Standard References could be browsed if a kid wants (with maybe some sort of locks to prevent an 8 year old from getting access to the more "interesting" stuff unless a teacher does an unlock)

err there were 5 seasons of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda (but you can skip all but the last episode of the fifth)
well i think if it ran over an F-350 the truck would land up very "blended" (each tread is about 50 TONS in just "shoes")

easy fixes for the monster under the bed problem
1 give the kid a good led flashlight (also helps with getting to the bathroom at night)
2 use a pedestal bed (no Room Under the Bed) or just store so much stuff under the bed it runs out of room
3 tell the kid she/he has a guardian angel with a BIG ASS SWORD (that only works for monsters)
