Just because I have my computers all internetworked does not mean that there is any software on them that requires the internet.
Then you are the exception, don't use yourself as the marker that everyone else in the world must be judged by.
MANY if not MOST people who have personal networks at home DO use each seperate computer to access the web. I get asked CONSTANTLY at work how to do this. It always starts "I just got DSL/Cable and I want to..." NOTHING wrong with that from MY POV but to the ISP thats a problem.
Please explain 1 scenario of how this could happen and not also be achievable with a single computer.
Are you suggesting that you can't FATHOM even ONE scenario where this could happen???? FINE-
Dad is downloading the latest SP99 for Windows in the den on his laptop. Son in his room playing the latest networked FPS with his friends. Daughter is in her room chatting on IM and downloading the latest N'Sync album from Morpheus.
Now they could all take turns, but then the bnadwidth usage is not coming all at the same.
Tell me how all three would be accomplished at the same time with one computer???
Given that i'm clueless *grin* I sit dumbfounded waiting for another informative reply such as yours
I agree completely that the ISPs are making a huge deal over a small issue, but you hurt your argument when you say things like:
I can just as easily use the maximum bandwidth with one computer as I can with 10.
THEORETICALLY, this is true. You COULD be a warez host, setup up your machine to continuously download Britney Spears songs from Morpheus or some other bandwidth hogging setup.
But its MORE likely that if you have multiple machines in your home you are using MORE bandwidth than if you only had one.
Now, Its not as simple as "You have three machines, so you are using three times the bandwidth" but the simple fact is that you are using MORE bandwidth in some manner.
"I don't use as much bandwidth on my four computer network as some Morpheus addict uses one just one machine" is not a valid argument to the ISP b/c they want the "cost" of YOUR use to be as low as possible.
Its backwards I agree, but thats how they are looking at it.
Flame, troll, moderate me as a troll all you want, I can handle it.
Its not as if I'm the ISP and I'm going to make money off of you...
Can't fault a company for trying to make some money - hope it works.
Actually, this parallels the story on Monday "VPN Clients Not Allowed On Residential Service"
EXCEPT then it was unacceptable for a cable company to charge extra for a business account
Again, my criticism then was not of people dailing in from home to remote a server, my criticism was of people saying
"YEAH, I use it all day long telecommuting for business but I don't want to be charged a business rate. My business can't afford THAT! They have no right to differentiate me based on my use or time of use"
Now Ximian differentiates their service levels and/. wishes them luck
"This would stop me from telecommuting since my company would not be able to afford the business service."
If you are TELECOMMUTING then you ARE a business customer. The only difference is that you aren't PAYING as a business customer.
Everyone can argue about if there should be different "classes" of service, but that is the business structure the Providers have chosen.
There will be people posting here "I use VPN but not for business." With those people I agree: Simply claiming the using VPN makes you a "business" customer is unfair.
But in the case where you ARE using the service as a business but want to only get charged the residential rate:
Quit your whining and stop being cheap
A business has the right to charge you the rates they see as fair and you have the right to not use their convenient service and start driving to work.
Excuse if this is redundant, but I am not seeing this ANYWHERE.
I know that/. is often the first place that many people go to for solutions to these type of problems. The problem is that the AV sites (and Microsoft's own site) are directing all attention to one single patch.
SP2 also protects against the server vulnerabilty, though it isn't spelled out where everyone is being directed by Microsoft or the AV/News Companies. So if you have uped to SP2, the IIS issue is not a problem
For this info, go to Protect Your Computers From the Nimda Worm

but the Florida surveillence cameras did claim a victim
Change the topic to the arrest of Dmitry Sklyarov. Reporter writes a story about how Dmitry was arrested with an accompanying photo. Behind Dmitry in the photo is a man. Woman sees picture, says "That's my deadbeat ex!" and he is arrested.
The reporter never should have reported Dmitry's plight because it led to a someone being wrongly arrested???
this still happened because we have cameras in public places
No, this happened because the media prints photos and SOME people who see the photos are idiots. This is unrelated to the fact that public officials are making bad decisions and putting cameras in public places.
The title of this post totally shows how DESPERATELY the editors want this to be an issue. When the software IDs someone incorrectly, fine.
INSTEAD, some lady in Oklahoma saw a picture of this guy, and said "That's my deadbeat ex!" This has no reflection on the software (which, BTW, I'm no fan of)
You hurt your cause when you present nondamning "evidence"
We did this CONSTANTLY in Physics lab when our teacher started grading us based on a percentage deviance from the expected result INSTEAD of when we followed her clueless instructions and got crappy results. Guess what! Our numbers always came out to within 98% once we knew that!
What was great was how pissed off the prep girls got at us, not b/c we were "massaging" the numbers, but dispite the fact they were in our calculus classes, they couldn't figure out how to do it as well!
I worked at as an interviewer for almost a year, staffing a help desk (I KNOW, I KNOW, they're not sysadmins! This wasn't your standard help desk though. I counted up the interviewer I did once about 9 months in and it was over 500! yikes).
It became clear VERY quickly, that many of the "standard" questions I was given when I started didn't cut it. Unless you are looking a sysadmin god, most of the specific questions about "How did do such-and-such with this command" don't tell you much.
Here are the types of questions that told me if the person could work through a problem. Have them tell you EXACTLY what they would say and check with someone who tells them the following
"My computer's not working"
"My screen is black"
"The printer's not working"
If they can't lead you through these basics, you shouldn't even waste your time with the rest.
Does anyone remember when you first ran into a Java based item on the web?
You prob went wherever you were directed to download a plugin, and were done with it.
GUESS WHAT!!! Its even MORE brainless now in most cases. If you don't have Billy Bob's Big Badass Plugin, it pops up and automatically asks if you want to install it! Most users just click the download button without thinking because they want to see the latest "George Bush is stupid" cartoon.
But the fact that the WOULD do it, does not mean that intellectual property is none existent. If we are talking about who is in the right, and not that ppl would steal anything they can lay their hands on, my point completely justified.
The techers COULD photocopy all the books too. But they don't because they are aware of copyright laws (generally, they do copy PARTS sometimes). The difference here is that the teacher acknowledges that he was aware that he shouldn't copy the software, but HE felt it was justified because they didn't have any money.
Next week I will be "borrowing" your SUV b/c I feel that I am justified, I don't have one, I need it and you have too much.
The article was not discussing ppl using free OSs. And IMHO, when you start using/writing your own OS, it is YOUR responsibility to port items to that OS.
If I do it as a company I am doing it as a business case, it is not my responsibility to support your choice of OS.
but I put Office on their computers because they couldn't read the Microsoft Word attachments they kept getting from the district's central office. It was easy to do, and it made sense since our schools are in dire financial straits
BTW, for those that don't know, M$ has free viewers for most of their file formats available for download. Not that I expect your average teach to know this.
Lesson One-Look at the documentation. Briefly, try to work from there. If that doesn't work, throw the documentation in the corner and start tracing cables and checking connections yourself
Lesson Two-Tell the whole story, including the politically incorrect drama
I might have missed it, but I saw nothing that mentioned the "She" that quit for whatever reason, but I wasn't reading for that reason. However, I did read the whole account and find it strange that that was glossed over.
Thing is, all the ppl who were crying about how you were changing the posts before are going to go into hissy conspiracy fits now.
But will I still get electrocuted when I walk into walls and sound like I just won a free game on a pinball machine???
Do the SS still yell "Rach-Rach" when they see me?
When I am out of ammo, can I still trap a standard guard in a corner by walking up to him, hold him hostage, steal his ammo, load my gun in front of him with it and shoot him?
Do I get to have someone else aim and shoot while I move?
GOD, I hope SOMEONE remembers the 80s version of this game, or this is going to to look REAL stupid!! *grin*
All that said, I wasted SO much time playing that original version.
What woulde really cool is to put that version as some kinda easter egg in the new version

In one of those boring training classes with tons of computers, wait for a break or other convenient moment
Discreetly swap your keyboard into the input of one of your "more-gullible" classmates, if you have been in class long, you have figured out who...
Now's when the fun starts
STOP TOUCHING ME
I MEAN IT, CAROL.
Etc. You get the idea, run with it
Can be fun, but its hard not to laugh when you start getting these mumbled WTFs and the victim calling out for the instructor!

Besides the spelling error, I SERIOUSLY doubt anyone who reads /. doesn't know who Scott Bakula played. *grin*

A friend goes to every embarassing website he can think and enters the email address for his wife's ex-boss. Pron sites, embarassing drugs, on and on.
It has been 2.5 years and he still does it!

Okay, sorry, what? *cough, laugh, shake head* Isn't the standard cry "Windoze is for the idiots that don't know how to use a real OS"
If user friendly more of the crap Gateway/Dell/Compaq put on the their "consumer" besides the standard M$ icons, I want no part in it.
However, you attack my sig, you go down!
Actually, I really could care less. If you must know, my sig is a quote from the movie Twelve Monkeys.
So, it installs NT for you? :)

Damn, I hope the kids were able to get out of the way first *grin*
Desks, chairs, paper, cleaning supplies, books, food, buses, etc.
Georgia Pacific should just give the kids paper and pencils for free *smirk*
I dont think any of my past employers spent ANY money on education. They were happier just being clueless :)
