in our office we installed the latest and greatest anti-virus suite on our machines and after that ms office decided to stop working. This even happened with w2k (which as we all know according to microcrap should be immune to dll hell;)
But.. this meant 1/2 day's worth of work down the drain.
I am always amazed by the amount of (apparant) hostility that US citizens seem to display to their Government. Is this because they feel it's not their government at all?
Surprised? Just by looking at how many people actually vote I'm not surprised. afaik in Europe people are rather interested in politics and are therefore more likely to vote. (flame me all you like if I'm wrong!) This, however is not the attitude that Joe American Public (at least not from what I've seen) has.
Actually people _are_ picky about car-noise (well, at least in europe...).
In every decent car-review I've read, noise (be it from the engine, road or the surroundings) _is_ an important factor in the overall score of the car involved. In fact I've seen reviews where cars were simply not recommended because of noise.

dude... HW doesn't care about date/time. I know my 486SX25 ain't y2k compliant but that doesn't stop it from serving its purpose as a webserver and firewall and it even shows the correct date. The only thing you have to do is set the date back to pre-y2k in the BIOS and change it back when you've booted up Linux/*BSD. That's what I did and it chugs along nicely:)
ok ok, so I don't have any usb devices. But what I DO have is a DVD drive and a decoder card, and THAT was working pretty well 10 minutes ago (finished watching 2010: the year we make contact) without a hitch.
The decoder card is a Dxr2 and the funny part is, in windows I always had to decrease my resolution to 1280x1024 (my norm is 1600x1200) but in Linux(X) I could watch it full screen in 1600x1200 and according to top, the proggie only used about 10% cpu, and that's on a 300Mhz K6-2 (The same computer has seen the light and when I try to boot windows I swear I can hear it say "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that")
IMO that is about as stupid as you can have it. "Oh, sure... let's have the states decide for themselves what to teach and what not".... If anything should be under federal control it's education, that way EVERYBODY gets an equal opportunity wrt education, not just everybody in X state(s) but every single body.

Tell me you are kidding. Do you have any idea whatsoever how big (i.e. how many bytes) even the shortest of dvd-movies are? Even though you are in the (notso)good'ol' US of A, sufficient bandwidth to even dream of sending a whole movie through at a decent speed does not come cheap. To my knowledge it's even cheaper to buy the equipment needed to rip'n'burn dvds (byte-per-byte copy, keys included) than purchasing the said bandwidth. You mention shrinking it down to VCD, I suppose the moderate home PC does that fast? -
