Major Shawn Weed, an intelligence planner with the Third Infantry Division
So he's in military intel? Isn't this among the most famous oxymorons in existence? The jokes are too numerous to mention, all with Apple or the Army as the brunt of the jokes.
I can see the switch ads now...My name is Shawn Weed and I find Iraqis in the desert.
btw, I'm not trolling. I'm writing this from a TiBook using an Airport, behind a Linux server.
I was going to moderate this one but how do you moderate something -1 Wrong?
The kernel Traffic pointed to by this list includes nothing on 802.11g, nor does a search on the same site come up with no results. So, I guess I should mod it -1 Offtopic, though sine it *could* be right at some point in the future, I suppose I'll just point it out in the comments.
As much as it supports other companies that benefit from the FCC's latest attitudes, kill the land line if it costs that much. No land line and a cable modem will get them out of your life. Chances are, you've probably got a cell phone anyway, and if you're stuck using a modem, I'm sorry.
I know whining about not posted submissions is a no-no, but there are so many times I wish you could fend a submission to someone more likely to be following your subject matter, say Pudge for Apple stuff, Timothy for YRO, etc. Makes me want to learn more Perl just to get this into slashcode.
The term for this is Restless Leg Syndrome and is treatable. It's similar to spasms in the legs. This can not only cause your partner annoyances, but can keep waking you up many times a night, keeping you from getting a proper night's sleep. (sleep that follows a restful pattern through all the stages of sleep).
I am treated for this with medication and it has done wonders for my energy level. If this seems like a serious problem, find a sleep disorders specialist in your area. More information is available at Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation.
IIRC, it was about 75% voting for him. He's pretty well liked by his district, and is constantly giving even non-geeks reasons to continue to vote for him.
1. Give the other coasts a chance to wake up. 2. Timing: many are leaving for Thanksgiving trips in the US, and are AFK. I'm sure many will be hitting their heads if they see this a week later when they get back to work. 3. "Me too" is discouraged on/., so we're not voting with the number of comments here. 4. Like interview questioins, moderation is probably a powerful factor in this discussion (wish I had some moderation points, but I've posted twice here so they wouldn't do me any good now).
I hope it's not him. I have the pleasure of voting for Rick, and I trust him. I don't believe I can say that about anyone else I've voted for in a looooong time.
I hope there is someone else in Congress emerging a clue out there. I would not be suprised to find out that Rick has/. as his home page, or is at least a regular visitor and doesn't need to rely on a staffer to tell him. I hope another Congressman is looking into it: Rick may be developing an ally.
NoiseBuster Headset. Spent $40 or so on these a year and half ago. Great for the server room.
http://www.spiritcorp.com/noise_cancellation.htm l for some software. That was a 3 second google search for "noise cancellation software". Never used it, but it seems based on the same principles. Not for live listening though.
We have a SANCube here at work. It's not really full sharing of a device either. Only one computer can have read/write access at a time, and this has to be switched manually via software. The others connected can have read access. It's prone to problems, and the only way to fix file system problems is a reformat - a serious PITA if it's nearly full.
It also doesn't have OS X support. Right now it's been turneded into a JOBD for a single user machine. If we need to share it, we still use the LAN, so if we were sharing data full time, we would just leave file sharing on, or hook it to a file server.
As others have said, get some form of NAS/file server.
My department currently has bought Real (now Helix) Server, SPSS Web Server, VMWare, and a course content delivery system (mainly for the course content), all running on Linux. If you make a product that is better that free alternatives, those that need that improvement will buy the software.
Helix server is an excellent example of Linux software sellling, from a user stand point. I can stream all 3 major media types (Real, QT, and WMF) from one server, with one set of accounts, one set up issues, etc. and it's worth it to us for that alone.
Do somethig unique (as the parent has said) and it will sell, same as in any other field.
Linux games have sold - UT, Quake, as you're paying for something unique.
Cross platform is good to, as is lets those of us who like a product pick what we want to run it on. I hate finding a product is Windows only, as it means I most likely have to find yet another machine, with yet another OS license to run it on, instead of just putting it on our load balancing linux cluster.
By pointing this out, your have just made a DMCA violatin in your discussion of circumventing the security of software. Your IP has been recorded, so be on the look out for the black Suburbans, windowless mini-vans and raid jackets.
This isn't condoning the use of software without paying for it, it's giving a user a choice of "vendors" including users being a vendor themselves. If this were Microsoft that were being run-around, you'd probably say that it'd be a great thing. By Apple using open standards (the kind of thing/. has been clamoring vendors to do for ages now), they are allowing this as an option.
Apple has a feature built into their OS. If you like that feature, you have to: 1. Pay for their hardware 2. Pay for their OS 3. Find a service to use for.Mac.
It's not like they're not getting any money in the deal here. Last I heard #1 & #2 were how Apple has been making it's bread & butter for years now. I'm glad Apple has let this happen, since I don't want to back up my notebook over a slow connection and rely on their server. I'd rather use a LAN, my server and my tape drive to provide extra backups. That's part of the reason I bought OS X. (read: Paid Apple Money for the software.)
Where is our obligatory troll from the user who won't buy a Mac because of the keyboard. Afterall, he's a long time "UNIX" user. Can't have an OS X posting w/o him. He must be asleep. Did ucontrol finally get him to look for something else to rant about, like the number of mouse buttons?
Last I checked NTFS support in Linux was unreliable and so FAT is the only useable alternative for dual booters. (No flames on that, I boot Linux i386 and ppc, Mac OS X, and only when I have to Windows.) I don't want to waste disk space on an OS I hardly use and format it into a read only filesystem.
Legacy Apps? Consider Mozilla a Legacy app? From the release notes: http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.2 a/ Mac OS X: Mozilla will not run when the application is installed on a UFS partition. The workaround is to move the application folder to an HFS+ partition and it will run correctly.
I recall other apps with similar restrictions (compiling Perl, which may be fixed by now, Airport Configurator, some Adobe product). I've successfully used a combination of HFS+ and UDF for the BSD stuff, such as/usr/local on a UDF partition. Also, creating a UDF disk image is handy for working with a UDF partition if necessary for BSD work.
Until recently (barring drug overdose, genetic or developmental abnormalities) 26 year olds did not have heart attacks. So, looking into my crystal ball, this will be used as ammunition for the argument that videogames reduce your level of physical activity, and are somehow responsible for the recent rise in cardiovascular disease among the very young - I can't find the ref. on google, can anyone else?
Think of the tragic sports related deaths in the last few years. Most are related to heart conditions. I recall a (college/high school?) basketball player (but not his name) who died on the court from a heart-attack. He was in organized ball, and I doubt he suffered from a lack of physical activity. Dehydration is more likely to be the underlying problem, if not a physical defect that was exaggerated by the basketball game.
Obesity is on the rise in developed countries. Video Games have been blamed, but so have junk food, fast food, and education on health and wellness. All are probably contributing factors.
This is a poster that understands the value of humor in dealing with tragedy. While i haven't heard any 9/11 jokes, I can remember quite a few Space Shuttle jokes from when I was a kid.
I'm a gamer, and I have been so stupid/depressed/obsessive compulsive as to ignore my bodys own calls for help, and not just with games Heck it's now 5am and I haven't gone to bed yet, for no apparent reason (I'm home recovering fromsurgery so I can get away with it now and sleep to recover from it.)
My joke (above) was with a bit of sympathy, irony and wonder as to the afterlife. Was it worth it? Was is a good way to go - thinking abbout no troubles but finishing that last level? Will I ever get that depressed and escape into gaming (again) and go too far?
I have much sympathy, and a bit in common with this man, and I help he's playing what he wants to now, on a comuter, in some afterlife, or will be reborn in time to play Doom IV when it comes out.

Again?...Alright....
Polka music with wild special effects begin.

Sometime sarcasm can combine the two.
You can possibly set up an ssh tunnel and use BBEdit's ftp support. This assumes that you have a shell on the destination server.
