Warner Brothers Announce The Matrix: Special Edit
Kartik3 writes "IGN.com is reporting that Warner Bros. is releasing a 2-disc special edition DVD of The Matrix (loaded with extras) on April 29th and The Animatrix (An Anime series set in the world of the Matrix) DVD on June 3rd." If Animatrix is half as cool as the promo comic that was given out at the Matrix opening, I'll like it.
That's what the matrix is.
File under 'M' for 'Manic ranting'
Maybe the original DVDs everyon bought have degraded?
A blue Pill and a Red Pill ;)
wish I could read what was going to be in it...
And hopefully this DVD will not break down 2 years after I buy it!
...I have no way of knowing: is this 2-disc set going to be substantially different from The Matrix plus The Matrix Revisited which are available now? I mean, I already have both of them. I don't see why I should have to pick up another.

Maybe I'll buy this one...I still don't have the Matrix on DVD. The only copy I have is the VHS I bought used at Blockbuster.

I miss Animaniacs so much! is Dot gonna be Trinity in Animatrix?
Oh, wait......Nevermind
Warner Home Video will be repackaging The Matrix as a 2-disc set. The new edition will essentially contain the current film and The Matrix Revisited discs. Revisited will be padded out with new promotional features like "Preload: On the Set of Reloaded," episodes 1&2 of The Animatrix: The Second Renaissance, a preview of The Animatrix, "What Is the Game?" trailer for the new Infograme "Enter The Matrix" videogame , a sample of music from Reloaded, and a Marilyn Manson "Rock Is Dead" music video. The set will also include a free ticket offer to The Matrix Reloaded. The Matrix: Special Edition is due on April 29 and will retail $27.95. Oh, and the packaging will be "foil-wrapped" (insert eye-rolling).
Speaking of The Animatrix, this more ambitious project will be released on June 3rd. This disc will include nine short films conceived by the Wachowski brothers, delving into the world of the Matrix and its characters. The collection of shorts, ranging from traditional anime to full-blown CGI, will come from world-renowned anime directors Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Koji Morimoto, Mahiro Maeda, Takeshi Koike, Peter Chung and Andy Jones." Episode include "The Final Flight of the Osiris," "The Second Renaissance Parts 1 & 2," "Kid's Story," "Program," "World Record," "Beyond," "Detective Story," and "Matriculated." The Animatrix will retail $24.98. As for the two actual sequels, the Reloaded and Revolutions DVDs are already in production and are being promised as "breakthrough discs".
Anyone have a mirror I could get this off of.
why should I get it?
It'd probably be rotten in 2 years.
errera hunamum ets
Wasn't The Matrix: Revisited a "2 Disc set loaded with extras"?
I too would like to know if this release is any different. The title "special edit" suggests to me that perhaps there are some extended scenes in this one.
I've always wanted another special-edition DVD to waste 30 bucks on!
First they give us this version, and soon we'll have this "special edition" and let's not forget the inevitable "directors edition" and "boxed=set" editions that will be coming in the future!
Hehehe... i don't care though - Matrix rules!
Best joke ever. Watching the Matrix on VHS. Tears man, Tears!!!

What is it with this footage manipulation crap everybody is doing? i mean just release the film in its entirety and stop holding out on us. Im starting to feel like im being taken by a realy sick and masive bait and switch scam. I can see haveing a directors cut but this is getting out of hand
We substituted the coffee Slashdot normally drinks with "Sandoz Crystals", Lets see if they notice the difference
Ooo! Foil packaging!
Doesn't sound like a new edit. I really doubt I'm going to be replacing my old Matrix DVD.
I used to work (until quite recently) in the Entertainment section of a Kmart. When they released the Lord Of The Rings DVD (2 disc), people bought it in droves, and as I'm sure you'd guess, it was a best seller for months. Then once all the fuss has died down, they re release it in a special four disc edition, the extra discs containing a few average documentaries on the making of LOTR plus an extra half an hour of unseen footage. Of course, it sold like crazy again.
As I was running the transactions through, I'd often ask (or sometimes just be told by) the customer, that they'd already bought the two disc set, but they had to have the extra discs for their content. Most of these people weren't your 'typical' hardcore nerd type person that obsesses about things like this: they were 'ordinary' people (like your older brother, or your mum), who were doing this.
They'd also mention (and this is my point) that the next time things like this came out, they'd hold off until they released the "Special Extended Edition"s of all the really big name movies (LOTR, MATRIX etc).
I admit that I've almost done this too, I bought the original Matrix DVD, and I bought the original LOTR dvd set (2 disc), and now that they've brought out the newer ones, I was not only quite pissed that they've brought out 'bigger' versions, I half contemplated buying the new editions. Now I've not forked over that money, and I certainly won't do it. However what I will do, and I'm sure that a majority of people will too: is to hold off buying it until they have released the Super Special Extended Amazing Edition of whatever movie it is.
Their sales will drop until they realise they can't get away with it.
Why is this being released so late after the initial DVD release? Sounds like this is just trying to build hype over Reloaded. I doubt we'll get any real light-shedding debuts on this release. Probably just Criterion knock-off interviews, "The making of:" stuff :/
Lately the phrase "loaded with extra features" is tossed around rather lightly, man.
They should call it "The Matrix: Repackaged"
Just another way to milk the first Matrix for more $$$$ before the next movie arrives this year.
How many times can you watch the same cliched Keanu Reeves "sci-fi" adventure flick?
31 times and counting.
I knew they would do this. I was considering many times to by the matrix, but knew that once reloaded was near they would try to get as much money as they can out of it. I would wait until they release them all together as one big set, but I'm not that frugal.

Just when you thought they couldn't squeeze more oney out of a francise they replace the natural number version system with a real number system.
LOL. I don't know what your bandwidth is on that FTP server, but just for fun I clicked to download a 680 MB file. Time remaining: 2 days and 17 hours remaining.
I think I will just buy it, or rent n' rip it, its a better use of my bandwidth.
I think that might be bordering on obsesivness.
First they get you to buy the Matrix when it comes out on DVD. Then they release a 2-disc "Special Edition" a scant *three years* later!
Bastards!
How long before these DVDs degrade into a pool of goo?
About 11 times. I expect that number to increase shortly before and after the sequels come out.
If only Keanu Reeves could act...
duh.
Do people just walk in and upload stuff? How? Or did you accumulate all this eclectic mix of stuff yourself? I'm amazed and impressed! How come you haven't been busted yet?
Here at Warner Bros, we appreciate the free advertising given to our Matrix entertainment product.
We also appreciate how many Slash Dot readers purchase these "special edition" DVDs. It's comforting for us to know that all this talk of "boycotting the media corps" and "don't give them any of your money" is just hypocritical hot air.
Sure, most of you have seen the movie already and could just save your money, or (ha ha) use it to support lesser known directors and actors who could use the exposure, but you choose to give it to us. We thank you for that.
Rest assured, this money will go directly to our pockets, and occasionally to the pockets of a needy senator. Occasionaly, due to court orders and other circumstances beyond our control, we are forced to give some money to the actors, writers, and artists who create the movies.
Again, we thank you dearly for your support of our wholesome movie industry, and we look forward to your future purchase of our upcoming 3-DVD "Matrix Multiplied" set. We know you'll buy it for that extra 30 minutes of footage. And of course the "Matrix Engaged" 4-DVD set which comes out after that, which comes with a set of Matrix stickers with your favorite personas.
It's through your unwavering interest in our products that we're able to bring you innovative new products such as: pay-per-use DVDs, annoying copy-protection schemes, and corrupt corporate-welfare legal schemes like the DMCA.
Sincerely,

As for the special edition DVD... I can't wait! I unfortunately received a copy of my Matrix DVD with the pins in the center of the jewel case broken and missing, so the DVD has simply been sliding around for over a year. I never bothered to buy another copy because I figured a special edition had to come out sooner or later.
But looking at the release specs, deleted scenes still seem to be absent. Did they only shoot what they wanted, and did nothing get cut? I can hardly find that believable... or was everything worth keeping kept (probably)?
Either way, the Matrix is my favorite movie of all time -- bar none -- and I'll be there to pick up my copy of the special edition DVD as soon as I can!
After the recent article about degrading DVD's, I'm now reluctant to buy any :-/

Neo: There is no DVD?
Warner Bros boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the DVD that rots, it is only yourself.
I rushed out and bought the Alien special edition boxed sets. The first two movies were repackagings of the laserdisc sets, and the last two were featureless movie only editions. Now they are coming out with a new "Alien Quadrilogy" boxed set; new special editons for the first two, and real special editions for the other two.
Despite all of the excitement that seems to be surrounding this release, I won't buy it. I'll wait to replace my collection with the HD-DVD version, whenever that comes out. Same goes for the Matrix. How did I just know that they would eventually bundle that "Revisited" disc in with a super-super edition.
Fortunately, they did announce the movie and special edions of FOTR at the same time, so I didn't get burned on that one. From now on, though, any blockbuster that is release in a "Movie-only" or "Limited suppliments" edition, I defanately will not buy, and will hold out for the eventual "deluxe" edition.
I am really annoyed at the Alien set. I was certain that that would be the last time it was visited until HD-DVD. Crap.
My Matrix DVD is starting to decay and fall apart, this one will be out right around when my old one shatters into bits inside my DVD player!

I really hope the "extras" include a new commentary track. Have you guys ever sat through the commentary that comes on the DVD. It is a *painful* experience. Its such a great great movie that its sad to see such monotonous commentary. Carrie Moss has some interesting and funny comments, but honestly she just isn't present enough throughout the track. Instead its two of the "geeks" that helped put the movie together ( one was in charge of visual effects). Although some of the technical insight is interesting -- for the most part you find them talking through the best parts of the movie about totally unrelated subjects, or extending valid points way too far. Maybe I'm being a little too critical on something that's supposed to be off the cuff, but it just seemed like the techinical guys didn't have a clue as to how to make the commentary interesting for your average viewer. However, geeks never have been great at stimulating conversation for the masses for minutes, let alone hours.
:-) ).
I love listening to the commentary tracks on DVDs -- Fight Club and Training Day being two of my favorites -- as they offer insight into the movie's themes and motif's and new perspectives on something you may have taken for granted after 5-10 viewings. After so many years and so many viewings, I'd love to finally know what the brother's think of their creation or hear more from Laurence or Hugo (probably not Keanu though

So now i can pick up used copies of the 'inferior' versions of LOTR, Matrix, Tron, Pulp Fiction, etc for cheap, and not feel so bad about supproting the Hollywood Machine? Cool....
Wouldn't it be wiser to not buy said special edition? At least half of the /.ers out there seem to truly detest the DMCA/RIAA/MPAA, so then why pad their pockets? Personally, I won't buy it. They've called me a thief though their actions and policies. I liked the Matrix, but I won't be filling the chest they dig from to buy off our representatives in the house and senate. I hope you all will do the same too.
Since the Animatrix is produced by Americans in America it is many things, but it is most certainly NOT anime.
This is as stupidly annoying as when they drew Spider-Man with huge eyes and called it manga.
hey people, get a grip. Are you complaining you bought their bate and switch? First off, DVD is/was a completely new market the companies are learning about. Since no one could have predicted consumer interest in behind the scenes features, we're bound to get multiple version. Now obviously they are trying to exploit the huge success of block busters, but again vote with your wallet.
Goscinny and Uderzo's lawyers will slap this down so fast for copyright infringement (along with those other indomitable characters, the Mighty Unix, Merry Linux, and the nasty legionnaire Weetabix): As described in this article .
I already have the original Matrix DVD and VHS. I think I will wait until next year when the whole triligy is released as a special edition box set.

Ironic considering the movie itself was the pinnacle in terms of special effects and all that hoo-haa. A pity they couldnt have made a DVD to simply show off the movie.
Here's to hoping that this "special edition" does something about that.
Hey, it's not "funny". I'm serious. Use hexadecimal for everything.
Why, they've added just tons and tons of otherwise unavailable promo material for the *next* "Special" Edition.
That's what.

Anyone who likes the matrix probably never took a linear algebra class. If I have to row reduce one more matrix by hand instead of letting my calculator do it, I'll going to kung fu someone's ass.

MORTAR COMBAT!
I would buy several copies of said DVD as presents, too.
I found this page. Some of the shorts have release dates listed (one of which is February 4) but others don't. Are release dates scheduled for these, or are they out already, and if so, where can I download them (if possible)?
Yes, multiple sets suck, but some companies will put out shitty versions first or decide to come out with new versions for promotional reasons. Think about how many versions of Star Wars have come out over the years? Off the top of my head they're come out with the original releases, the THX remastered releases, the Special Edition releases, and the new set that came out a few years ago with some extra promo footage. Considering that the last 3 sets came out in both widescreen and pan and scan (a shame to see this crap coming to DVD... but that's another rant) that's at least 10 different sets. Sooner or (more likely) later we're going to have the DVD releases and there might very well be regular and special edition releases of both... not to mention the actual special edition releases to follow that.
Terminator 2 has had two releases so far with another one on the way (can't have anything to do with the third movie now can it) to oust the previous so-called "Ultimate edition". Stargate has been out in 4 editions on DVD alone with another one coming out soon as well.
For whatever reason you'll have extra editions for reasons good (LOTR needed time to produce the special features and compose the music and such) and bad. Think of the excellent newer version of Seven, or Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Sometimes though they don't even get the new version right (the new version of Reservoir Dogs is misframed and has color problems, but the old one had terrible video quality and sound) and it's worth it to come out with something better.
The bottom line is to look around before buying something in case a new version might be on the way, no matter how long (Goodfellas has been in production for a while). If the current version is a bit weak on features or poorly made and a fairly big film... wait. The new version will probably come around eventually.

I have the Matrix DVD (in its cheap-ass warner carboard box), and its english-only. Does anybody know if the 2 disc special ed will have more than one language (French and Spanish)?
I buy few Warner DVDs because they are so much cheaper than most other DVDs...they all come in this cheap, flimsy folded cardboard box (wich sounds as though you're breaking it every time you open it), and usually have only one language available and laughable extras (oooo! animated menus! wow!).
The recent ones seem to have gotten over the monolingual deal and have some actually interresting extras (the powerpuff DVD is from Warner, and its got 3 languages and funky extras like character commentaries). But I'd like to know in advance.
You can't take the sky from me...
Hopefully they'll make the menus even more annoying than the original Matrix DVD!
> is releasing a 2-disc special edition DVD of The Matrix (loaded with extras)
Hmmm, why didn't I get this the FIRST TIME I bought the movie?
> If Animatrix is half as cool as the promo comic You misspelled porno. It's anime, remember?
Don't be too down on Warner's cheap packaging, they also sell their DVDs cheap. WB's stated goal is to make DVDs an impulse counter purchase, which is pissing off the other studios that were hoping to ream people on $25 a disc, as the music industry did in the transition from tape to CD. Personally, I find most DVD extras interesting for about 10 seconds. I'd much rather have a $12 DVD with just the original, english version of the movie than a $25 DVD with interviews with the director, the actors, the makeup artists, the cameramen, and the grips.

Another case of a studio double dipping a DVD release. There doesn't seem to be anything really new in this case. I'll vote with my wallet, by not using it. If they were to have a whole new video transfer to clear up the defects in the original release and have a nice new dynamic audio mix (the original DVD's audio mix seemed very flat), then I would certainly spend the money. But I don't believe that this will be the case.
...but orange sunshine never looked no paisley to me. Whoa, the walls are breathing!!! SHIT Yeaaaaaahhhhhh!!!
What is up with everyone saying that the Matrix DVD rots? This is the first I've heard of it.
I have a website. It's about Macs.
since the Matrix was very much inspired by another anime, Ghost in the Shell.
Ok, new Matrix stuff, that's great. But seriously, who here is NOT going to sit tight and wait for the inevitable Mega Matrix Boxed Set (all three movies plus the animatrix)???
Actually, Mine may have or will probably because I had signed with an alcohol pased pen, by John Thum one of the graphic arts who won an academy award.
really turned me off, sold most of my collection on eBay, keeping only about 25 really essential films. This repackaged version of The Matrix won't lure me in, and frankly, as long as I get anamorphic transfers of full theatrical cuts, I could care less about all the extras. Outside of something really amazing like the additional footage they are tacking back into the LOTR films, they can keep thier multiple versions of every release. Way to cannabalize your own market and dump on your customers. Oh wait, I forgot we are dealing witha **AA group, that explains it.

I can't believe you're citing the PowerPuff Girls Movie DVD as an example of a good DVD release. It's pan-n-scan, for chrissake! I love the PPG dearly, and I own all the TV DVD releases, but I'm not going to shell out money for a pan-n-scan DVD, no matter how much I liked the original movie or how cool the extra features are. I do agree with you that the character commentaries kick @$$, though.

Who else read that as "Porno comic"? Given the context, it is even funnier..."I like it." Yeah, you and all the other hentais out there.
FYI: Hentai is not so much a TYPE of anime erotica, so much as it describes those who watch it, 'Pervert'.
Has anyone got a copy of the bootlegged alternate version of The Matrix in which Neo takes the blue pill, gets out of the hacking scene, and becomes an insurance salesman? Running time is 43 minutes - have not been able to find this anywhere.
see www.outwar.com
There's an extra character who was never seen in the original matrix. Instead of taking just one pill, she took the red pill, the blue pill, and had morpheus cook up a dozen other types.

How do they get away with this? Simple: it works. People buy newer editions, and as long as something sells well enough they'll continue to keep it up. The day everyone learns not to buy the same movie more than once, we'll no longer be treated like morons by the studios this way.

I bought a 2002 car. I love it, and thought it was the best car they would ever make. Turns out, they have a 2003 model! And they changed things and added some other things! They can't get away with this!
However what I will do, and I'm sure that a majority of people will too: is to hold off buying it until they have released the Super Special Extended Amazing Edition of whatever movie it is.
If the 'normal' movie doesn't sell well, they think there isn't a market and won't bring out a Super Special Extended Amazing Edition.
If Google really cared they would fix Android Chrome to reflow text, instead of discriminating
Well, apparently Hollywood no longer has the patience to market "shiny things" to the clamoring public in a metaphorical form.
Freedom: "I won't!"
Um, normal people (ie. people that don't visit Slashdot) don't pay attention to DVD announcements. They go to Walmart or their video store or whatever, see that the "Lord of the Rings 2-disk Special Edition" is there, figure that's the version they want, and buy it.
If New Line *really* didn't want to bait-and-switch people into buying both editions, they'd have to either (a) put a warning sticker on the 2-disc edition warning the 4-disc edition was coming out soon, or (b) offer a substantial discount/trade-in for purchasers of the 2-disc edition when the 4-disc comes out. The best solution would probably be a $10-off coupon on the 2-disc package for the "upcoming 4-disc edition".
Not that I'd expect them to do that.
I wondered about this about LOTR for instance....I heard that Peter Jackson had a lot of hard core violence shots done but they fell on the cutting room floor to get a PG-13 version. If I buy a DVD I want it to be as good as it gets...even if that means an R version. Bring on the spilled orc guts.
For all you out there that wine and complain that the MPAA or [name evil media corporation here] is abusing it's consumers/customers/sheep,... by all means buy and enjoy. :)
I count this as the third release:
Original 1 disc
2 disc set with Revisited
This new one
However, it sounds like disc 1 is going to still be the same! Personally I couln't give two hoots about the new extras that just sound like spoiler-filled trailers for the new things. I just want a new transfer that doesn't look and sound quite as poor as the over-compressed artifact filled and otherwise inferior to the (rather rare) laserdisc release. For the love of all things cool, please could they fix this at last?
"I Know You Are But What Am I?"
I'm not complaining about the whole alternating boycott weeks thing, but rather, why did so many people bitch and moan when New Line released the special extended edition of "Fellowship of the Ring" with full disclosure beforehand, and seem to not mind blatant moneygrubbing like this? I love FotR, I knew that the EE was coming out, so I waited patiently (sort of) for it to be released. I love the Matrix too, so, not knowing that a bajillion re-releases were coming, I bought it when it was first available. Look at the Bond DVDs... release magnificent boxed sets of everything, then some time later, start re-releasing! But people complain about two versions of a new movie being released within a few months of each other with press releases before the first declaring their intentions. Whatever.
