Warner Brothers Announce The Matrix: Special Edit

Kartik3 writes "IGN.com is reporting that Warner Bros. is releasing a 2-disc special edition DVD of The Matrix (loaded with extras) on April 29th and The Animatrix (An Anime series set in the world of the Matrix) DVD on June 3rd." If Animatrix is half as cool as the promo comic that was given out at the Matrix opening, I'll like it.

When they released the Lord Of The Rings DVD (2 disc), people bought it in droves, and as I'm sure you'd guess, it was a best seller for months. Then once all the fuss has died down, they re release it in a special four disc edition, the extra discs containing a few average documentaries on the making of LOTR plus an extra half an hour of unseen footage. Of course, it sold like crazy again.

As I was running the transactions through, I'd often ask (or sometimes just be told by) the customer, that they'd already bought the two disc set, but they had to have the extra discs for their content. Most of these people weren't your 'typical' hardcore nerd type person that obsesses about things like this: they were 'ordinary' people (like your older brother, or your mum), who were doing this.

They'd also mention (and this is my point) that the next time things like this came out, they'd hold off until they released the "Special Extended Edition"s of all the really big name movies (LOTR, MATRIX etc).

Now, multiplex this analogy to the RIAA/MPAA...you essentially have The Raft (From Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash novel...if you haven't read it, you should) of these big companies.

Now, if it's hard to steer one big multinational company...how hard must it be to steer an entire raft of them all lashed together? Suffice to say, change is a hard sell to large companies, and the complexity of change is multiplied when large companies converge into organizations like the RIAA and MPAA. These organizations of conglomerates epitomize centralization in the market and they have hit the brick wall that is the de-centralized nature of the Internet.

So they're experimenting on one front while violently defending their monopoly on another front.

Their sales will drop until they realise they can't get away with it.

I believe that your conclusion is correct, but I think that they already know that they can't/won't get away with it. I believe that they're fighting a digital war that they know they cannot win, so they have chosen to fight the digital equivalent of a "forced retreat". By that I mean that they (the RIAA/MPAA) are going to eke every cent they can out of their customers until their current leadership can bail out (with a golden parachute) and keep their reputations intact. Once those dinosaurs are gone, we might actually see an entertainment cartel more willing to acknowledge the rights of their customers. Unfortunately, you can't measure efficiency solely based on the total gross product of a movie. From what I understand, the studios contract with the theaters where they earn around 90% of profits for the first week after release. ... therefore efficiency, in the eyes of a studio, is how many times they can show a movie in the first week of release. ... therefore, the shorter the movie, the more efficient it is. A studio will not release a three hour movie if they can help it. It's a shame, really, because I like long movies (except if the movie is crap, in which I'm itching to exit as soon as I can :).

There are a few films that defy the 3 hour barrier. You've named the Titanic, but Gone With The Wind went for a massive 4 hours. Films _can_ run for a long period, and still be a big money spinner. They are few and far between, though. That you cannot dispute.

      1) The old releases have been out a few years now.

      2) They really have cleaned them up a fair bit further, apparently, and transfer technology has moved on quite a lot as well.

      3) Aliens will apparently have the theatrical cut this time, thank God. Even just this alone would make it worth it for me, as I hate the extended version; it really ruins the pace for me.

      4) Alien3 should (hopefully - its not confirmed for certain) have the extra workprint scenes inserted to present the 'fan cut' everyone has been clamouring at Fox for the last x years to release.

      5) DTS tracks all round, and a proper 5.1 sound mix for Alien from the 70mm version, rather than the hacked into 5.1 release on the current disc.

Finally, its sounding like some of the extras in your set (most notably the Goldsmith score on Alien) may not make it on due to the space taken by the new transfers, so it may be worth keeping both if you're a big fan.

Instead its two of the "geeks" that helped put the movie together ( one was in charge of visual effects). Although some of the technical insight is interesting -- for the most part you find them talking through the best parts of the movie about totally unrelated subjects, or extending valid points way too far. Maybe I'm being a little too critical on something that's supposed to be off the cuff, but it just seemed like the techinical guys didn't have a clue as to how to make the commentary interesting for your average viewer. However, geeks never have been great at stimulating conversation for the masses for minutes, let alone hours.

I love listening to the commentary tracks on DVDs -- Fight Club and Training Day being two of my favorites -- as they offer insight into the movie's themes and motif's and new perspectives on something you may have taken for granted after 5-10 viewings. Big surprise here. It's called double-dipping, studios have been doing it since DVDs first came out. Look at "Men in Black". There's a regular version (DD5.1), regular version (DD5.1 + DTS), double disc edition (DD5.1) and double disc edition (DD5.1 + dts). If that isn't the worst case scenario, I don't know what is.

How do they get away with this? Simple: it works. People buy newer editions, and as long as something sells well enough they'll continue to keep it up. The day everyone learns not to buy the same movie more than once, we'll no longer be treated like morons by the studios this way.

Err, I'm fairly sure you're wrong about Men In Black. Firstly, all versions were released on the same date, so its not like double-dipping in this case. Secondly, ignoring the presence of seperate Pan and Scan releases (which don't really count as I wouldn't give them the time of day), there were only three

      1 disc DD 5.1
      1 disc DTS 5.1
2 disc DD 5.1 loaded with extras.

I specifically remember it because I was annoyed that if I wanted the DTS track I had to miss out on half the bonus features. Now that might count as a double-dip ripoff, indeed.

If New Line *really* didn't want to bait-and-switch people into buying both editions, they'd have to either (a) put a warning sticker on the 2-disc edition warning the 4-disc edition was coming out soon, or (b) offer a substantial discount/trade-in for purchasers of the 2-disc edition when the 4-disc comes out. The best solution would probably be a $10-off coupon on the 2-disc package for the "upcoming 4-disc edition".

Not that I'd expect them to do that.

I love FotR, I knew that the EE was coming out, so I waited patiently (sort of) for it to be released.
