"Apple's Open Directory Server is NetInfo. NetInfo is included as part of Mac OS X Desktop and Server, and is also included with Darwin.
so this would mean you can run darwin instead of linux and have everything you need. now if it is open source and portable to linux, you'll have to do some research for that.
I've been using yahoo mail since MS bought hotmail. They are a good service since they give 6MB of email space compared to other free services and have low graphic, high speed interface that works in any browser just fine.
and when it comes to spam, the Bulk Mail folder takes care of almost all junk, and if it doesn't you can block addresses completely.
But what is the funniest thing about Yahoo is that even Yahoo's own emails about new features, special deals etc etc, also get sent to my Bulk Mail folder!!! that's just hilarius to me.
My Yahoo account no longer is my primary account now that iTools now gives webmail, but for the years that it was my only service, it was quite good and i never had a spam problem like i did with hotmail.
yes definately. i am in australia for a while, and when i was in brisbane, the net cafe, gaming spots were all packed all the time. they were nice places with nice boxes. they had to have been making good money. the ideas with coffe and books and stuff are good, and please dear god, let ppl hook thier laptops into your pipe! charge them half price of the normal net usage or something. maybe even get a wireless hub. the "cooler" your place is, the better chance of cool people (who spend lots of money to be cool) will go there and spend thier money.
at radio shack for 5 dollars u can get a cable that goes from a 1/8" jack (headphone) to a left and right channel RCA jacks which will plug into your stereo.
for the car, you can get a head unit that has aux ins on the back or many that come with disc changer controls have adapter units that will give u a pair of RCA inputs.
everyone has a cellphone, not an iPod, and they hold their important #'s in there. what about todo lists and the like, that stuff would be much cooler to me? anyone else agree?
SM57 is one of the best dam mikes every made....it's about the preamp...
a good preamp can make a 57 sound as good as a neuman, so imagine what a neuman thru a good pre will sound like...
obviously he knows he's not doing pro records, pro tools is only needed when yer doing lots of tracks....for 8-16 tracks MOTU or other companie's stuff can do just fine....it all comes down to your ears. a crappy compressor in the right pair of EARS is better than the best vintage tube compressor in the hands of a rookie. buying decent gear and learning how to use it is the key
if yer using a mac or pc for hardware i would go with MOTU...they have a few firewire audio interfaces that have 8 or 12 tracks of digital audio over one firewire cable!
midiman makes the quattro which is USB 4 tracks in and out for 350 dollars
software wise....cakewalk makes the best stuff for a pc probably....
mac i'd use digital performer....
pro tools is awesome, but expensive. keep in mind that digidesign just put out some brandy dandy new system so prices may be dropping on the older stuff.
ripping thru an spdif will be slow since u wont't really be ripping....u'll be playingthe cd into the computer and then encoding to mp3
having an SPDIF means u will have perfect digital quality to WAV it's numbers not wavs remember...
the disadvantage is that the entire cd will be one big wav file...u can't get a wav player to know where the tracks start and end...it's just like if u use analog inputs with a tape deck or any audio source...it's one long recording session...
you sit for hours at your computer every day and if u have a decent CPU u won't even notice the ripping and encoding much at all (specially if u have SMP) i'd say it's easier to install more than one cdrom if u want the speed
if you look into pro audio and recording magazines you will find many desks setup for multiple monitors and extra gear...these usually have places for large speakers as well...
most studios will use 2 monitors...one for the "mixer" one for the track waveform diagrams for editing...
the 2 speakers and your head should form an equilateral triangle (all 3 distances the same) and have the speakers at ear level...that's about all you can do without changing your room's dimensions
I have my aiwa mini system connected to my computer...It's one of those combo cd cassette radio tuner with 2 speakers...the old ones..from about 94 when mini systems didn't suck like all the shiny light show crap going on....
also in my plans is to hook up a crossover and a pair of 12 inch subs to my system so i can make DVD watching much more fun:)
if your just needing some decent speakers...i recommend the Harmon/Kardon's that come with dells...they sound good for their small size...
Rob Malda has a few of his own and has built a mame machine, and also built the cabinet himself.
It looks very nice and he has it kind of well documented with links to the places to get any plans and other stuff you may need. have fun -----

Might be a good idea to look into Ogg Vorbis instead of MP3 for streaming becuase it by default uses VBR which would be better for bandwidth...and it's open source which makes it much nicer not having to pay those German's. www.vorbis.com -----

these suckers can really get you. after a friend of mine fell asleep i grabbed his lappy and popped in a boot/root disk, mounted his disk and moved his passwd file just to see him freak out the next time he booted the box:) but apart from the joke, anyone can hook up one of those and yer toast unless you do something as mentioned above. It took me only 5 minutes to do what i did to my friend so it would be easy for anyone to do this behind your back. -----

Laptop CDROM drives usually have more skip protection then a normal CDRom drive for a computer...if u can do some fancy wiring with the IDE stuff i guess you could pull it off. -----

the midiman quattro is a good USB digital audio device...not faster than real time, but then again the question didn't make much sense.

Donate tham to OBSD
or Debian
too bad IBM tried to save them...
if SuSe goes belly up, than IBM would probably move to Debian as it's official Distro and help with the RS/6000 port...
