the minute that the rest of the world cares what you like, we'll all do our records on 5 grand worth of studio equipment. until then, i want my neumans
you can't take any graphic designer and expect them to understand human interfaces and UIs for applications or websites.
a huge reason that software sucks so much is because there aren't many interface nuts out there creating good interfaces
programmers don't magically know human interfaces either. it's just that corporations don't care enough to make a quality product.
many of the best mac applications come from a team of an artist with technical knowledge and a programmer who at least cares about the way things look. you just tend to see more quality aps come out on the macintosh platform
(and yes there are lots of horrible mac applications too)
there is a simple shareware called BootCD that will take any OSX box and make a bootable CD from the OS and u can choose what apps you want to be included on the disc then burn it.
Takes about 10 minutes to boot depending on the speed of the machine but it's a great way to diagnose machines if you don't have a spare firewire drive laying around.
does jabber allow for offline messaging in the ICQ sense... when they sign on the messages sent to them get shown...
also can you open up this in tiger server to roll your own ichat network... or would it be LAN only. just wondering. but everyone can run their own networks and not be bothered by other services... at the cost of reiability of course
disclaimer: i work for an apple reseller, network var, authorized repair shop.
why should your reseller call apple for you about a problem. they are a reseller. the warranty you receive is from apple. and apple fucks their resellers so much that it is not cost effective for the reseller to pay their tech whatever an hour to call apple for you.
apple made thousands off of you. the reseller only facilitated you not having to wait for the item to ship, and only made a few hundred bucks. why should they spend their time helping you.
who can afford to compete with apple. who can drop that kinda money on a retail store in a great location and put all that shiny stuff in their store. no one can do it.
since the markup for the reseller is so incredibly tiny the reseller can't make money selling macs. they can only make money in service that is out of warranty or by training or consulting time.
no one can survive just selling macs. it's impossible. there's no profit to be made in a 10-20% markup on products.
ok iBook 1,000 dollars. dealer profit 100 bucks. apple profit 900 bucks. even if the reseller sold 10 ibooks a day they couldn't even pay their rent with that income. and who sells ten macs in one day.
this is cuz all the other machines are sold thru distributors. not directly by apple. so they don'thave to deal with the returns or anything. it's all someone elses hands.
everyone loves to say macs just work....but in the business world that's definately not the case. the office apps don't open docs properly on the mac. don't have the same featureset. the web pages out there that corporate people use don't work properly in safari or IE or mozilla or firebird or whatever the hell else browser you wanna use. there is no perfect interoperability between fonts and documents in word and other apps. the adobe apps still crash a lot on graphic designers. the move to OSX set back all software vendors a lot. and so i don't think the mac will be a viable solution to interoperate with pc's or corporate environments for at least 3 years.
even if they do find out. they don't care. no one is gunna stop going to broadway shows just cuz a bunch of musicians are getting thrown on the street jobless....they don't care at all. and they can't tell the difference anyway.
i have to say tho cool cuz it's a mac. it's really poorly done. with some more research you could have had a much more stock looking installation.
there are in dash svga monitors. even ones with touch screens. they mount right in your dash and fold out. they even have one with a motor that automatically extends it out for you.
i mean who wants that big huge screen stuck in the middle of your car. it's just screaming to all thieves out there to come see what's inside and steal it.
second beef. the IR thing. ugh how ugly having wires draped all over the place like that and that stupid ir reciever. at least mount it in the dash somewhere so it can't really be seen.
tape adaptor: if yer gunna go thru all this trouble why totally muck up your sound with a tape adaptor. nothing more said there.
PVC pipe. how ugly. at least paint it black or something. there are in car laptop mounts. might as well just gotten one of those if you wanted an arm in your car.
cable showing. tuck that stuff in man! cars have carpets and they are easy to pull out to hide things.
it's sad to see a really nice car with a bunch of cheezy things stuck to it.
sorry to be so negative. but there's so many more possibilities out there than the ones this person chose to take.
www.nycwireless.com has a good intro to setting up a hotspot and what equiptment can extend your rage, i'm sure all of this info can also be applied to an indoor setup.
that is the most horrible comparison i've ever heard of.
if you put linux on a powerpc box it will smoke osx on a powerpc box. cuz linux is a streamline OS that doesn't do 1/10th of all the stuff that the OSX box is doing. Aqua is by far the most advanced GUI ever created so comparing Linux vs OSX is not a valid test of hardware performance.
i've noticed that many plasma screens have SVGA input. the cheapest i've ever seen a plasma tv was at plasmapeople.com and i'm not sure if they had SVGA input or not. worth a look though, flat screens are oh so sweet.
a huge part of scsi's price and speed/stability is that it's got it's own chip that manages everything more or less completely seperately from the rest of the machine.
many people have said they won't touch thier machines when burning with an IDE drive yet with scsi you can play quake and burn cd's and not be worried.
so what about a middle ground. couldn't motherboard makers put some IDE dedicated hardware onto boards so that the performance would be better and nothing would interfere like with scsi.
what if i buy a PCI IDE card. is this just expanding what is on my botherboard, or adding it's own chips the same way a scsi controller is. (maybe an IDE RAID card that you don't use as RAID , but just for the seperation benefit)
i remember an idea raised about a year ago to help land line phone co's to make some cash off of payphones by leasing the space to wireless companies and allowing them to install mini antennae for cellphones on them.
wouldn't it be nice to have a "tower" at every corner of every block in a city?
sure in remote areas you would still need larger towers, but it would give better reception in cities and save the trouble of those huge towers
theyfit.com
Some custom sized condoms will be coming soon
where do you get your used solar panels?
There are plenty of portable phone/ipod batteries out there already. Here's one i found in about 30 seconds

because we all have boatloads of bandwidth nowadays. no one needs to buy the cd like they used too.
make openbsd 10gigs for the basic install. and cd sales will go up.
"We've previously reported on this story"
so why are we reporting on it again...
Don't forget about the many recent times that apple completely didn't deliver hardware on time...

i went to both those sites and can't find information about it. i'm extremely interested if they still provide that service.

give it a try
eMac = 1,099
iMac = 1,299
compared to PCs, it's not that much more.
that is the most horrible comparison i've ever heard of.

anyone heard of this idea b4?
i had to do this my freshman year
so all i have to say is:
no, god no.
opposed to what DVD?
dvd scratches, smudges, get's dusty.
one touch or bad scratch can ruin a DVD.
at least tape's are protected by the plastic casing. when was the last time a VHS or DAT tape just stopped working for you.
