    Second this.

I work for the Canadian branch of an international NGO, and MS almost throws software at us - we recently were donated $50 000 MSRP of software from MS. We paid $2300 in "administration fees" - which pay for two years of Software Assurance, downloads, customer service, tech support, etc.

Most software companies are generous to registered NGOs.

We do use *nix for many things, most of our network infrastructure is *nix. It just makes sense. But for the users, who know Office and Windows, we can't justify the lost time and training in switching to a something else when there is next to no price benefit - our software cost per workstation is ~$50 every 4 years.

I do feel bad for being a MS propagation machine, but they do make it pretty darn easy.

MBHkewl: 32-bit virus/firewall applications will not install on a 64-bit system. Maybe because they need more OS access, I don't know, but Norton, Mcacfee and a slew of others would not install because they do not support 64 bit systems..

And yes, this big drab-looking device is dog ugly - but this isn't a slick made-for-media concept phone, it's merely a functional prototype on which the developers and engineers can tinker (and we all know that as rule, they're not big on elegant design).

Actually, it looks a pretty efficient way of using gravity to move. It's not much different than how you learned to walk, except that the robot keeps two legs stable instead of your one. In fact, the talking video chick says "this novel tripedal gate is highly energy efficient."

It also has Fingerprint recognition to boot/decrypt files. The 740 isn't the first notebook that has that technology.

I think it works as a theft deterent (with me going to school and all), but there are problems with it.

The software to input and change your fingerprints will only run on windows 2000. (I haven't tried WINE though).

the software writes the fingerprints it "ok's" to the BIOS (or firmware somewhere) and then checks your prints against that on boot. so if you use win2000 (preinstalled) to input your prints, and then format install another OS, you can't change the fingerprints without reinstalling Win2k.

    it looks cool though.

Imagine If Bill Gates Watched you code and compile for a few days and had the nerve to tell you that you spent too much time on mundane and boring things like security and stability, and not enough time on research and GUI development....
