I think this was Sun's attempt to link the web or interNET to their DOT in Dot Com marketing.
Of course Sun could say that they were thinking way ahead of the curve and now it refers to GRID computing or their Sun ONE strategy... RIGHT!:-)
Either way... you're right SUN's marketing bites really big and their corporate marketing efforts will fly completely over the head's of WalMart consumers.
I AM CANADIAN and I and so f@#$'n tired of these poor starving artists who claim to be suffering so much because people are downloading and/or sharing their music...PLEASE get over yourselves
I have a hard time believing that all but the very best... maybe 10% of Canadian artists are being traded, even moderately.
And this tax the ISP for others is truly Canadian and just as f@#$'n stupid.
Canadians pay more taxes to "protect" Canadian businesses that peddled in international television signals, music distribution and now possibly internet access... talk about a racket!
Reading the comments made by RedHat really make me wonder just where they think their market will grow after the business and enterprise markets become saturated with RedHat, Novell and MS solutions.
RedHat forgets that MS DID NOT gain any significant foothold in Business markets until workers starting going to work singing the praises of this software called Windows.
Ignoring the consumer market will inevitably cost RedHat more in the long run. IMHO
It sounds to me the RedHat will eventually be a proprietary services solution for an Open Source OS and/or product... now doesn't that make those investors wiggle!
Yup... next we'll just allow any old corporation to come crashing through the door with a half baked, sorta legal document and extort money from you because "THEY" claim you broke the law... according to them.
Very dangerous when we allow corporations and associations to become, judge, jury and executioner.
This could be an excellent business strategy if properly executed.
Novell clients are usually pretty slow to move into new products and spaces because of their current Novell comfort level.
Bring that comfort level along with the stability of the Linux platform and NetWare's reliability and you've got a pretty solid and very competitive platform. PERIOD.
Proven File and Print Services
Proven Directory Services
Solid Groupware/Email Services
Solid out-of-the-box web server/services solution
and now built on top of a rock solid Linux foundation... this is going to get very interesting... very fast!
Face/.ers we're never going to see the demand for technology that we did before and during the bubble.
Fact is that most businesses will be able to make hardware go further using Linux and Open Source and software spending will IMHO eventually flatten out again.
The real test will be when MS's Licences come due in a year or two... then we'll see how much business is willing to spend of software, etc.
A good barometer to watch might be the sales of Office 2003... and NOT the sales included in new PCs but the sales to businesses and off the shelf.
These sales figures should give an indication of how strong of demand and/or a willingness there is to upgrade and spend money on software.
My guts says more and more businesses will be turning to OSS solutions quicker in the next 18 months in an effort to control costs and break out of the MS upgrade treadmill.
I don't understand how the US courts can abandon the US and world consumers by handing M$ such a pitiful excuse for a fine... if you will.
Here is a company that has made BILLIONS, most of which it sits on to thwart competitors and invest in anti-open source companies like SCO, and the courts only see fit to fine them 0.44% of the profits they illegally gained.
Ok maybe I missed something but when Microsoft LOST the "trial of the century" and was declared a monopoly, one of the restrictions placed on Microsoft was that they could not require the use of one application/service to promote another application or service.
So, if now certain functionality of new applications requires Passport, a separate service/application, then isn't Microsoft in violation of the judgement?
Seems top me that MS has adopted this bury the requirements for other products and/or services within the application's functionality and this trend seems to be appearing throughout their product and service lines.
Ok the following quote is from a Microsoft executive that is trying to explain with Open Source is bad... Does anyone see the humour in this quote!:-)
Microsoft says it knows it won't win every contract, but it opposes any type of mandate preventing proprietary software from even being considered. It says that's bad for technology companies and bad for taxpayers, who may get stuck paying for inferior, more expensive products.
You have to smile when the big guy is trolled out to reiterate MS's position on the very topic that they thought their were going to re-intrench their monopoly... a.k.a. Trusted Computing.
I wish the media would stop biting on these absolutely useless PR stunts that MS is saying are real information sessions or interviews.
The media is just as much to blame as MS is for spreading the FUD!
One post asks this question and it is a question that the broader technology and software industry should face sooner then later.
- Why do software developers get a free pass on reliability? - Why can software makers force consumers into unbreakable contracts with a mere click of a mouse button? - Why should software have to be licensed and not purchased outright? - Is software a product or service or both? - Why are printer cartridges now covered by the DMCA?
These and many more questions will have to be addressed by legislators in the very near future or they will be clarified in the courts.
Valve claims the hacker(s) gained access to the source code via Gabe's email account...wink, wink.
I think Valve is having serious second thoughts about Steam and their whole game strategy regarding Steam.
I've seen the Steam BETA in action and I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to run their games remotely or in any way tied to this brutal piece of code.
So M$ has the courts of the United States at it knees willing to suck or blow Bill or Ballmer whenever required as long as it appears that justice is being "presented ala Survivors" certainly not servered.
Give me a break. Only the real artists are starving. Not the record companies or their stable of play it again...the same way you did before... roster of musical acts!
Christ all mighty... as if us Canadians aren't taxed enough. Now we're going to have to pay a tax for our crappy f@#kin' music artists too!
Really now, I bet you can count on two hands the number of "great" Canadian music artists being "heavily" traded on Kazaa! PLEASE!
This is just another infair and unwarranted tax that is being implemented to "protect" interests other then those of the consumer.
The solution is simple... stop consumering!
Did I mention terrirsts... ok good!
"The network is the computer"

Did we say terrorists... good ok then.
What the fuck is that...Pleeeeeease!
Losers spend endless hours online pretending to be someone they're not and get to share their useless lives with others of their kind.
Might keep suicides down but it is definitely NOT Social Networking Software!
(:- !
Lets face it... Disney has largely become the drive-thru for low budget, afternoon babysitter movies.
Eisner may be a smart business man but he isn't a filmaker, story-teller or dreamer... just a high priced media pimp.
This could be an excellent business strategy if properly executed.

I don't get it?!
Maybe its the Canadian in me eh! (:-
Think of it... its the next BIG THING! Voice SPAM... holy f*%# I've got to patent this before anyone else gets their grubby hands on it.

Valve was looking for an excuse... however lame!
And the one they decided to use is BEYOND lame!
Good point!
So will the studios be declaring these altered files like they do with the wide verus panscan versions?
I doubt it!
Everyone has failed to recognize that as the admin market has been flooded to the ninth with MS Certified everybody since the late 90's.
That means it is far more likely for a younger admin to recommend a MS or Linux system then it is to recommend Sun.
The last time I checked I did not see any Sun Certified traiing available at me local career or community college! (:-
SCO: Did we mention that terrorists use Linux?
GOV: Yes
SCO: Oh ok good.
So typically American... everything is for sale and nothing is off limits.
And you are still wondering why people are driving airplanes into your buidlings and blowing up your troops overseas...
Maybe you could buy them off... oh wait you tried that already and they just bought better guns to shoot at you with!
Did we mention terrorists... ok good.
My car doesn't fall over if it runs out of gas.! :-)
If this thing is supposed to revolutionize the way entire cities are built I guess that means they're going to have padded sidewalks!
Clearly this problem should have come up during the design and prortype phase? Shouldn't it have?
LOL!

What's next... honest policitian!
Give me a break. Only the real artists are starving. Not the record companies or their stable of play it again...the same way you did before... roster of musical acts!
This rubbish has NOT place in the classroom.
Did we mention terrorists... oh ok we did, good.
This is probably one of the sickest fuckin' attempts to cash in on the events of 911 yet.
So is this in case the current piss off the world strategy doesn't work and we need accurate body counts and identifications for CNN!
Fuckin' sick!
Cut the chat rooms for the security of our children...
/. masturbation over this story...
...sigh...
Instead give them all MS Messenger cause we all know they can't get hurt using that piece communication software!?
Block all their terrorist friends...Did we (MS) mention terrorists... Oh ok we did
Anyway its for the kids...Did we (MS) say kids... oh ok good.
Fuck this is getting almost too stupid to comment on but I'm sure there be plenty more
