    Its funny reading through these threads and realizing that this is the same educational system that gave us our "fine" examples of business leadership we've been watching fall. One by rotten, dishonest one.

    The leaders of Microsoft, HP, Enron and Tyco and lets not forget about WorldCom were noted for their resourcefulness during their student years!

    This is unlikely to change while our economy and culture is measuredbe accumulated wealth - whatever the cost!

    You know I think what's really being lost here in all this blathering about MS and IBM and software patents is Xerox's original (prior art) for many if not ALL the foundational technologies that appear to have been "borrowed" by some many of the big patent holders of today.

    It seems to me that these same big players are doing all they can to position themselves to extract potentially HUGE sums of money from whomever they can when their monopolistic business models are in danger of falling.

    Just a humble thought from the fringe!

    Oh and what colour are the terrorists today? Yellow? Blue? Whatever!

    I have always felt that publically funded schools at all levels should be using as much Open Source software as possible.

    As a parent I'm always concerned when I see course desciptions like "Cisco Networking" and "Microsoft Business Applications". In fact we should be insisting on similar courses for Open Source software like Linux and Open Office.

    Public information should never be tied to any sort of proprietary software be it an OS and especially not a particular application like MS Word.

    And BTW... The Calgary Flames won the Stanley Cup on Saturday but appartently the Americans officials were too stupid to operate the "sophistamacated" video who jiggies! Then came up with some bullshit rule that seemed to be dreamed up on the fly to explain their obvious bias! Its our game and our cup and by god will have them back... send in Terrance and Philip :-)

    Sure, the largest bank in Canada didn't test a system upgrade long enogh to find that this type of massive failure would happen.

    BULLSHIT!

    Something is going on and my gut tells me it has nothing to do will a failed upgrade!

    But you know... maybe a failure of this size is a good thing, especially if RBC suffers significant losses and decides to lay blame else where!

    Maybe businesses will realize that any software company LIKE MICROSOFT - that doesn't offer any type of performance insurance isn't one to be trusted or do business with.

    Last I heard... and I'm Canadian, no dumby, a person not a beer, most RBC debit cards were being refused by merchants who have been told all accounts are currently frozen!

    Okay, I just finished reading most of the posts regarding RedHat's return to the desktop and this post just f@#$'n kills me.

    MS spurts and spouts about ROI and "real" costs yet nobody seems to be able to add up the real dollar impact of these almost daily security issues and breaches that are bring businesses to a screeching halt!

    Its almost like the current US administration. You know... if we say it often and loud enough they're bound to start believing us...unfortunately I think up until now MS has been successful at convincing most that its security woes are the falt of script kiddies, terrorists and the like and is probably reassuring the big ones that once their "Trusted Computing" solutions are implemented all will be right in the "free" world again.

    If Linux has a real chance it will be in the next 2 or so years so the "community" better get its ass in gear and start making a demonstrated effort to capture the hearts and minds of the desktop users who were one of the biggest reasons Windows 3.0 was adopted by the business mainstream... remember!

    So why then should a computer OS come with a license? What is the need for a ELUA with any software other then to set out VERY SIMPLE TERMS OF USE.

    Hey, wait... If MS and/or the computer companies are not shipping a fully user installable version of the OS then what is the consumer paying for?

    Essentially, MS and the computer resellers are lying to consumers when they say your computer purchase includes the OS when it really does not.

    So this leads to the question if you don't get a fully operational OS CD-ROM with your purchase who owns the "copy" that is on your shipped system? And is this covered under the EULA that EVERY HOME USER clicks through when they first start up their "new - OS included" PC>

    This would make for some interesting situations if MS every tried to accuse a home user of pirating software when in fact the home user never really owned a full version of the OS in the first place!

    I've been using PopUp Cop for some time now when I have to use IE and the first time this story was unleashed claiming then to be unblockable I dropped a line to my friends at PopUp Cop.

    The fine folks at PopUp Cop assured me that UniCast was NOT using any new and they would definitely be able to block any ads, especially those requiring a download. So there!

    Besides their is always Mozilla, Opera and Netscape. Besides if this "new" advertising method requires a client-side download how are they going to force users to download it if they don't want it? And it better not have any SpyWare included.

    Boy, these sites... ahh large greeding corps, have a lot of nerve trying to claim they are "losing" money of their websites?

    Hey man, I am Canadian and I pay for my capped bandwidth. So much per month. If I am going to start getting pop-under, silent downloads of f*#@'n tv style ads on the web then I'm going to have to ask my ISP to deduct the advertising total from my bandwidth before they bill be every month.

    ESPN and sites like them should have more then enough revenue from their tv operations and if they don't then CHARGE people to visit your website and watch how quickly the rednecks ditch INteractive TV and the online in-car camera.

    Please if you think its really that valuable then charge for it! Don't think you can steal my bandwidth to make money by playing ads. Maybe I should start billing these websites for using MY bandwidth.

    Here we go again with what will prove to be another failed attempt to bring TV style, interuptive advertising to the web. It will fail!

    Sure I'm all for anyone who wants to "use" these technologies but those who choose NOT to use these technologies should have alternatives that don't cost any MORE then the current "popular" offering. then its a real choice and not a choice driven by cost and/or user fees.

    A good example is the rapidly disappearing acceptance of personal cheques in Canada. In fact most big chains like WALMART don't accept cheques anymore.

    So if I chose NOT to use a debit card and I can't write a cheque, I guess I should start carrying my bag of loonie and toonies around with my bag of coal! (:-

    If technology is all about choice then lets be fair about the types of choices offered and how they are being offered.

    Hey, I've got an old RaQ2 MIPS that I've been looking for updates or more importnatly I new kernel but finding LINUX MIPS for the RaQ2 is next to impossible.

    I agree with most. These boxes were unbeatable back in the day. Truly plug and play and an unbelievably straight-forward user interface. Many companies today could learn from Cobalt's interface approach.

    taxed, user fee'd and surcharged to death!!!

    So what if this organization trys to target "uploaders"... the law, yes we still have laws, in this land doesn't allow for self-serve search warrants and while the details of P2P being legal in Canada are inaccurate the fact still remains that sharing music in Canada, even copying a friends CD is NOT ILLEGAL... so if I "connect" to a friends computer and "copy" a song for my use...technically this is NOT ILLEGAL! It all depends on your perspective as to whether or not you "uploading", "downloading" or "copying"... this will be a very interesting argument for a judge to hear. Yes we still have lucid judges in Canada too!

    These types of provisions are well known to the Canadian music industry because they allowed them into the relatively new laws that they hope to use against "file uploaders". You know the same ones who already pay a copying tax on their media and players.
