  1. Re:Two button mouse my... on Apple Developing Two-Button Mouse · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why would Apple design a 2 button mouse? Is that not insane? Wouldn't it make more sense to design at least a 3 button mouse with a wheel? What would really be gained by simply adding a second button?

In my opinion, yes. I have a 3 button logitech mouse with a scroll wheel, and it has worked flawlessly since the first time I plugged it in.

Aside from the lack of buttons and wheels, INMHO, I believe Apple has been downright stupid in their mice design for years. The hockey puck mice from the late 90s were a design nightmare. You could not easily tell tactilely or visually which way was up, literally. They were awkward to click, and just funny looking. To the left of me I have an "Apple Pro Mouse" that is a current offering from them. Someone gave it to me when I first got my powerbook, and its pretty horrible as well. Being that it is oblong, its easier to orient than the hockey puck guy, but instead of having 1, 2, or 3 buttons, they decided to have 0, and in some awkward motion your supposed to click with the whole forward half of the mouse. Another feature of this design is that the few times that I used it, it was not uncommon for the cable to get stuck underneath of the forward part that moved, and you could not click until you moved the cable away. Not to mention that none of the Apple mice have a scroll wheel. To be honest, I could care less about a scroll wheel. Scrolling by page either by the space bar or page up/down is fine, if not preferable at times. I use the scroll wheel because it is there under my finger, but I find it gets uncomfortable on my tendons with much use. The scroll thingy is handy for things like slashdot comment submission so that I can scroll down past the tacky ad while I'm trying to think and type.

What kills me about Apple's resistance for multibutton and scroll mice, is that they work so flawlessly and intuitively software wise in their OS. For example, the scroll wheel works very nicely in framed webpages. The right or secondary button is basically mapped to "Control+left click", which opens up a world of options. For example, if I right click on a downloaded item in the "Downloads" window in the Safari web browser, I have the options to open, show the file in the finder (file manager), copy the address or URL that the download came from (handy), and remove the download from the list. In GUI design, this is called "direct manipulation", like drag and drop, double clicking, etc. Its a good thing. I do wish that Apple would extend this further and add hooks to the context or "right click" menu in the finder like Windows does. Again, this adds to direct manipulation of the files. I love the fact that you can choose to enqueue a media file or play the file via the context menu in Windows. There is no such thing in Apple land.

Apple could get with the times and at least ship a multibuttion mouse, possibly with a scroll wheel, and simply have both buttons by default act as a normal "click" and the scroll wheel do nothing until the user changes the behavior in the preference panel. Its not that big of a deal, and it would work the same out of the box.

Apple gets a lot of grief here and I guess elsewhere for their 1970s or 1980s attitude towards mice design and usage, and I think they deserve every bit of it. Again, aside from design limitations in the finder, multibutton mice work flawlessly in the Mac OS. Having no official Apple hardware option whatsoever for this basic and time proven technology is stupid. However, Apple has held to their guns so long with their decision to keep the one button wonder alive, that an announcement from them to have multibutton will pretty much be taken as a joke by every computer user besides a current Mac user (if not them too).

Personally, I believe that they have waited so long, it really doesn't matter anymore. Its one of those things that Mac users have come to accept, and they simply know that they have to go to a 3rd party for a decent pointing device, and just put up with it when using someone else's Mac or a public machine.

What kind of torrents are allowed with this tracker?

    - All torrents must have music related content.

    - No torrent may distribute any official material. This includes, of course, OOP material and the separated audio part of VHS videos, Laserdisc videos, and DVD videos, too -- even if the recording is from a different source than the officially available material. Also not allowed are remixes/remasters of any officially available material and so called "bastard" mixes. One exception: The recording represents a complete show of which only minor parts are (or have been) officially available. In this case it's ok to keep those minor parts included to the recording. This applies not to compilations. No compilation may contain any officially available material!

    - No torrent may distribute any material of artists respectively bands who do not agree to the electronic distribution of their inofficially recorded live shows. For a list of bands/artists see here.

    - No torrent may distribute any lossy compressed music, i.e. MP3, VQF, OGG, so long as the material is known or expected to be available to the trading community in better quality.

    - No torrent may contain compressed archive files, i.e. RAR, ZIP, GZ. For content allowed with this tracker it doesn't make much sense to pack it in compressed archives. Thus, we assume that the torrent uploader wants to hide impermissible content in case a torrent contains such files.

    - No torrent may contain losseless compressed but platform dependent files like MKW. It's contra bonos mores of live music trading to exclude users of other platforms from the download!

    - No torrent may contain uncompressed PCM audio files like WAV, AIFF. Including such files to a torrent is a huge waste of bandwidth -- both, on seeder's side and downloader's side.

    - Microsoft Windows executables like EXE, COM are not allowed in a torrent because of the risk of carrying viruses.

    - Torrents without a self-explanatory title or detailed description indicating the contents, as well as torrented data not containing an info-file in plain text format (file extensions .txt or .asc) with a content's description will be considered as contra bonos mores of live music trading and are not allowed on EZT.

If you are not sure if your torrent will adhere to these rules, please ask the moderators first. Torrents violating the rules or contra bonos mores of live music trading will be banned without further notice.

Many bands are very clear in their support of taping and trading: Grateful Dead, Phish and Dave Matthews Band, for example, all have written policies on taping and trading. http://www.etree.org/thebands.html has information on many other taper-friendly bands. There are also links on that page to other information on bands that allow taping and trading. If your able to be happy and eat and have a place to stay and MUD for 23 hours a day. Go for it. If there are other things that you want to do and achieve (hence unhappiness) then go for that.

I think "addiction"s are so blown out of proportion. So much effort is wasted treating the addiction, that the real problems never get addressed. Addictions are merely symptoms of problems. They are rarely ever serious problems except when one is physically in danger. Its common for people to have an addiction at some point of time in their lives. Even for the middle school girl that obsessively writes the boy's name that she is "going with" over and over again on her notebook. Its fairly normal.

I could also store an 8MB bz2 version of the same thing, and if half of the people get that one instead of the 10MB version, that's only 9GB transfer. Since storage is cheap versus transfer, and since my storage:transfer ratio is going to be low, it makes much more sense to "waste" some extra disk space to save myself as much bandwidth as possible. Also from a server-load point of view, I can serve 111 more files in the same amount of time if I make both available, since i'm essentially saving 10% of transfer time too.

I agree. I thought about that as I was typing my response, but my advice is to make available .zip's if the target is for windows or macs, a tar.gz for the other people.

Being that you cannot predict if anyone on this planet will even want to download your content, its premature to grobble about 2-10% savings in bandwidth. Also, if it becomes popular, then you should be able to find someone to help with the bandwidth. Its akin to that "premature optimization" quote.

If worse comes to worse, you could just dump the file on sourceforge. They seem to have OK bandwidth, and they don't even charge (for now). Thats what I do.

But stick to something sane like zip or gzip (or possibly bzip if your into it). Using 7zip, being that today is the first time I've heard of it, is pointless. There are more than enough compression types as it is, just pick one.

There is something more rewarding about having an LP or a CD as opposed to pointing to a folder which represents a a few sectors of your hard drive...

Granted, there is value of a physical LP, but I would believe that fewer than 1% of the US population believes there is some kind of value to a CD.

For LPs, things are different. You have a large 12"x12" cover with good artwork. There are different colored vinyl releases. Typically, the quality of both the physical record and sleeve degrades with time and misuse, so older records that are in better shape have more value. Sometimes there are posters or other goodies in records.

CDs have none of these features. Most people I know don't even keep the cases and "artwork" that come with the CDs. They put the CDs in CD cases, and thats it. The only CDs that I know of that were tried to be collector items were the first issues of the Beatle's White Album where they stamped some number on them. I have not heard that these are any kind of collector item at all. I have seen an imported White Album from Russia that was on white vinyl that sold for $30 to $50 10 or 15 years ago, that was cool. Personally, I sold my While Album CD to someone when I was broke so that I could get some money to see the Grateful Dead.

I no longer own any vinyl. As far as a collector item, I think vinyl is cool. As far as a musical reproduction item, I think vinyl sucks. Yeah, there are arguments that vinyl can sound better than CD. I'll give you that much with no rebuttal. However, vinyl has so many things against it for playback, I don't find its worth the time or effort. Records do not fit into my car stereo, they do not fit in my boom box, they do not fit into my other portable items like a CD does. A record at most has like 25 or so minutes of music on one side before you have to physically get up off of the couch and flip the thing over. Want to skip a track on an album? Again you have to get off the couch and carefully lift the needle and go to the next track (yes, I know there are a minority of turntables that can almost always skip to the next track, I've owned one). Want to copy the record so that you can put it on your computer or another portable device or make a mix? Its not easy. At the very minimum it will take realtime to achieve the transcription to another medium. Vinyl and children do not mix.

I could probably give another half dozen or so reasons.

Don't get me wrong LPs are cool, and I love looking at someone's record collection and go to record shops and whatnot. I doubt I will ever love looking at someone's CD collection. I doubt that it was ever thought of with the advent of CDs that they were going to be basically worthless pieces of aluminum and plastic, but this has happened. I have probably bought maybe 5 CDs in the past 3 years. Most if not all of them were gifts for my father. I download live (legal) shows off of the internet and burn them to CD at a rate higher than I can afford disk space for. Sometimes I would like to have studio quality recordings for a change. But I cannot afford to buy CDs at my rate of appetite, nor is there enough material out there. I am much more likely to buy a music DVD than an audio CD. That is worth my time and money, and I get more value from it.

    CDs are dead.

That is amusing. I've thought about having a .sig that says "bzip2, saving disk space on servers by using twice the disk space". Yes, bzip2 is a better compressor, but is it really significant today? I rarely if ever come across bandwidth problems. Disk space on my end is cheap. Bandwidth on my end is cheap. In fact, I don't keep commonly available archives on my computer any more in any compression format. Odds are if I need the copy again, I can download and have it on my harddisk in less than 5 minutes either at home or work. Many times the copy will be updated and new and improved.

Back to the original question. It depends on the target audience. If its windows land predominately or even significantly use zip. If its pretty much a *NIX land, use tar.gz.
