To avoid confusion, any organization that is on the Terror Watch List is a valid target. I'm not saying that they will necessarily be effective. Essentially it becomes one of those "We will not prosecute you for it" kind of things. If people want to assume the risk, that is their choice.
And you are right, terrorists aren't exactly worried about military v. civilian targets, as is evident by the fact that they are terrorists. As far as nation-state folks, that becomes a lot more of a gray area. Last class I had on the Geneva Conventions did not cover anything remotely related to cyber issues. But to be fair, how many Chinese hackers try to penetrate U.S. systems of a daily basis? Last time I heard a number from a government organization, it was in the thousands of attempts per day. I don't see China stopping their state-sponsored schools of cyber-espionage. Why should we handcuff ourselves?
On a side note, I mainly mention this because I know the leadership of the Army's section of US Cyber Command (not GEN Alexander, but his subordinates), and I also happen to know they are complete morons. It would take them 45 minutes to get out of a Chinese Finger Trap (pun intended).
Why can't the government just say "American computer scientists are welcome to penetrate any computer system being used by Al-Qaeda or other organizations on the Terror Watch List. Please feel free to intercept or disrupt any of their method of communication. You will not be prosecuted for any actions taken against Terrorist groups."
Instead of playing Diablo III, my buddies and I could have "Hack North Korea" parties.
Since you already have penetrated my life so fully, I also want you to have access to a list of my friends and their information too. I know you will never use this information in a bad way, or to profit off of me.
So RSA tokens can be broken if someone copies the RSA software token. It doesn't take a security researcher to figure this out. Any 7th grader knows that if you steal someone's key to their locker, you can open it.
If this is what "security researchers" get paid to do, sit around and state the obvious, I am in the wrong career field.
Treaties always work. Never has a country ignored a treaty to accomplish some sort of nefarious goal. You'd think the Russians would have learned their lesson in 1942.
Another faceless bureaucrat put in charge of something to which he has a vague comprehension. So if he worked national security for OMB, does that mean he is an accountant that finds terrorists?
I'm sure Al-Qaeda is shaking in their boots. "Please don't audit me!"
It's a simple choice really. They can upgrade and modernize the systems or they can go back to pen and paper. Just take away Parliament's salary for a month and that would pay for the upgrades.
Who said anything about lying? It's well beyond lying. News International are a criminal organisation. The best I can do? What, news organisations being criminal isn't enough for you?
I'd say the numerous assaults and beatings in which the perpetrators said something about "doing it for Treyvon" is enough. The media hyped the issue, turned it into a racial issue (white hispanic?! Seriously?) You want to blame Rupert Murdoch for what one of his subsidiary companies do, when there is no proof that Murdoch knew anything about? So do we blame Obama for everything stupid that the Federal government does? Do you blame Obama for the Soldier that killed 16 Afghanistan civilians? After all, Obama is his boss. No, because of the inherent media bias, your bias on the issue.
Truth is you'll give anything right-wing a free pass.
Wrong. I just apply the same standard to media, I don't care what their views are. Truth is you'll give anything left-wign a free pass.
You're right, I did miss the subtleties you were making, my mistake. Now that you explained it differently, it makes sense and I basically agree with you.
Is that the best you can do? NBC edited the Zimmerman tape to incite racial tensions. ABC claimed the surveillance tape of Zimmerman showed no injuries, but a forensics guy was able to show the blood running down the back of his head. How many Treyvon Martin-inspired beatings have there been in the U.S. since their fake journalism?
EVERY news organization lies to make money. Yet the only one getting attention on/. is the conservative one. The ABC story never even made it to/. , just like any story proving global warming as a farce never makes it to the front page. Hello 1984.
I've wiped my Windows machine countless times and have never had an issue. If someone is too stupid to know the difference between an "upgrade" and a full install version, then that is their loss. Stupidity is not a disability, they don't need special protection.
As a matter of fact, it does. The same people who bash Fox News and Rupert Murdoch are the ones swooning over [insert random liberal nutbag here], with little pictures of them surrounded by a heart. There's no difference between the two, except for their political beliefs. It's not about phone hacking, or "distorting" the truth, its about which political party you like more. That's why raging Liberals watch MSNBC, because Jeffrey Immelt is a raging liberal. Conservatives watch Fox News, because Murdoch is a conservative. CNN, I have no idea what they believe, but Ted Turner is just weird.
Apple: They let you do whatever you want with their software and hardware, with pretty much no lockdown. If you start attempting to make a profit selling their product (without them getting a piece), they sue you. iOS is a partial exception to this; where they do pretty much the opposite (just like Microsoft).
There is a reason why Mac OS X on non-Mac hardware is called a Hackintosh. If Apple was really ok with this, then why do you have to hack the hardware and MBR to get it to work?
Microsoft: If you buy their software, you need to go through a song and dance to get it installed. If you modify the hardware, you need to go through another song and dance. If someone else copies your code and uses it, it gets revoked. If MS kills off the license server, your software no longer works.
I find Windows installation no more tedious than OS X, Fedora, Ubuntu, RHEL, CentOS, etc. (assuming no kickstarter-type file). I press the "Next" button just was many times. And adding unsupported hardware is a pain in the ass, no matter what OS you us. Try using the 2008 version of NDIS wrapper. And speaking of unsupported software.... I spent a week upgrading all my Ubuntu 10.04 systems (I didn't build these systems) to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. EVERY operating systems drop supports eventually.
Let's just be fair. Microsoft locks down the OS, and Apple locks down the Hardware. There are ways around it, of course.
I find it interesting that after so many years, the "ridiculous prices" trope is still rolled out. Apple prices are pretty much where they should be. They cover costs, add a bit for R&D, and then the regular markup on top of that. They don't compete with whitebox houses on price (same components for cheaper prices without integration or support) but they make up for it with marketing.
I can build a Windows/Linux computer from parts for 35% less than Dell or any other manufacturer charges. I can build a Mac computer from parts for over 50% cheaper. So you're saying their increased price is so that I can watch stupid Apple commercials while watching my favorite TV shows? I don't care if Samuel L. Jackson uses Siri.
The biggest costs in selling something technical are QA and support. Both things Apple generally does a good job at, because they sell that -- the cheaper products don't.
There are more reasons people buy Apple products than because everyone's doing it -- Apple is really the new Sony (in more ways than one).
And I can get the same technical support from StackOverflow, forums, and O'reilly Books and it is either free or cheaper. Anyone that knows how to use Google doesn't need tech support.
Before the "you love Windows" flame comes on, I only use Windows to play video games. My laptop is Ubuntu. My work computers are all Linux or Apple (yuck).
I can't believe it took over 14 (or 13,12,11 depending on time zone) hours from the launch of Diablo III for an article to get on/. I guess all the gamers were busy trying to log in?
This is why smoking is bad.
The kid should have searched "Tor" while he was at it. That would have kept the FBI occupied for a few more weeks.
Ask the Alliance. They didn't like Malcolm Reynolds all that much.

The slightest mention of that name creates panic. Compare something to it, and you'll get a mass of hysterical people.
Panic = ratings = $$$$ . Media has been dead for years, they are not about honesty or integrity, but about making money.
At least he was buying the best toy in the world. Imagine if he was buying Justin Bieber lunch boxes or something else equally stupid.
Not so secret anymore....
Dear Mr. Microsoft.
Since you already have penetrated my life so fully, I also want you to have access to a list of my friends and their information too. I know you will never use this information in a bad way, or to profit off of me.

I believe everything I see on TV. Especially that "Ancient Aliens" show. Kurt Vonnegut is brilliant for figuring that out.
Treaties always work. Never has a country ignored a treaty to accomplish some sort of nefarious goal. You'd think the Russians would have learned their lesson in 1942.
Right. The moon only affects North America. Everyone else gets to ignore it.
In general if a faceless bureaucrat gets appointed to an important position I'd expect it's because they're damn good at it.
You obviously have not worked for the US government.
I'm sure Al-Qaeda is shaking in their boots. "Please don't audit me!"
