  1. Re:its a fact... on Australian Commisssion Defends Playstation Mod-Chipping · · Score: 1

According to the Department of Justice, there are only 1,381,892 prisoners in the Federal Prison system.

    A Far cry from 5%.

I'll grant that the U.S. is turning into a police state at a rather disconcerting pace, but we're not yet a prison state, and we've certainly not reached 5% of incarceration.

That having been said, according to sentencingproject.org we do incarcerate more people than any other nation.

If you wanna look at interesting US Prison statistics, consider the disenfranchisement of African Americans and Hispanic Americans quoted in this Scientific American article.

As an Asian-American, the fact that the justice system is so racially skewed is truly frightening.

At the place that I work, we've been using (UGH!) AOL for corporate e-mail, cuz it's fairly easy to use, and they've got POPs everywhere.

Users manage to munge up thier software on a fairly regular basis. this isn't helped by the bloatware that aol calls a client.

In addition they're constantly losing the discs that we leave at the sites, so I go and grab a stack of 30 or so it seems about once every other month.

At the local Wawa (a Philadelphia area chain of conveinence stores) the GM won't let me take them.

At the CompUSA, they're just glad to be rid of the things.

When I couldn't find them at the OfficeMax, the clerk went into the back room, and gave me an entire sealed box of the discs. Of course, we do a lot of business with that office max, so I suppose YMMV.

Discounting your second paragraph, which falls under fair use clauses, what you're saying is that once something has been created once, that because we are capable of copying it, that the creator can not reasonably expect to be rewarded for his work.

    You sir are a LEECH.

It's precidely this sort of attitude that Copyright is designed to thwart. While we *CAN* infinately reproduce almost any work created, in the end, removing the incentives and rewards of creating will lead to a decline in creation. Intellectual Property is indeed an artifical coneccpt, one designed to foster and promote creation. It has a place in any society that decides that promoting creation is in it's economic and social interest.

I'll agree to the idea that the powers that be are abusing the concept of Copyright, (yes, the RIAA is trying to protect itself, and it's monopoly on the distribution of music, they're not attempting to foster the creation of music....) but that doesen't justify deliberately flaunting the law, nor taking away from the creators the rightful earnings.

When you say "I copy all my music CDs", you're comitting piracy plain and simple. You don't wanna give the RIAA or the artists your money? Fine. Then don't buy any CD's, see any movies, or consume any other media. If you don't PAY for it, and you don't get it via available LEGAL means, you're still not entitled to STEAL it."

Bought my S320 clie at $199.99. Sony's recently dropped the price to $169.99.

Had PalmOS4.0, 8mb internal, and the memory stick expansion slot.

Cheapest Palm I could find out there with an expandable memory slot was the M125 which is retailing in this area for $250.

And let's not forget about the DRM "features" of SD cards. Granted, the situation with the magicgate sticks insn't much better, but you can do what ever you like with the little purple MSA sticks.

The extra $50 I saved got me a nice case and a 16mb memory stick.

Bought a Visor NEO for my mother. Slightly bigger screen, but the thing feels huge in my hands compared to my clie.

That having been said, the springboard slot offers a lot more expandability than the little memory stick slot my clie has. But if I want to connect to the net, or make phone calls, or listen to MP3's, I've got a laptop, cellphone, and mp3 player for each of those.

In the end, at least for the low end S320 model, it seems to me that Sony's got the right idea. Best price for the features.

I've used them to get copies of music I own on VINLY or TAPE.

I've downloaded MP3 samples from TV show themes, funny commercials, speeches, and public domain recordings, all from Napster.

There are plenty of non-infinging, fair uses for these file sharing technologies. Don't lump all of us into the "Pirate" Category.

(FWIW: Yeah, I'll admit it. I've d/led tracks I don't own, mostly for albums not available here in the U.S.. Make of that what you will.)

The solution was simple, and low-tech.

Hacked a plastic drinking straw into 3 lengths of about 7cm. Shimmed/crushed them between the battery and the telephone.

This kept the battery from moving around on the back of the phone, thus fixing my mysterious power-off problems.

    And no unsightly tape! :)

I ended up quitting it in about 3 weeks.

The problem I ran across was the interface. All these wirless web WAP thingys use CPCD, right? (I'm W/ ATT Wireless). I've used CPCD on laptops before, and the speed wasn't too bad for browsing, especially if you disable image loading. On the other hand, surfing on my Ericcson RLX280 was an excruciatingly slow process.

Is there some sort of overhead associated w/ WAP or perhaps the WAP/Phone browsers? I can't see data transfers taking 15-20 seconds for less than 2k of text.
