Our company is seriosuily looking at Modzilla for a variety business applications. Having total control of the product gives up the flexibility to create some really cool app. for our clients. I think Mozilla, if marketed correctly, could start regaining market share from MS. Honestly, technology trends start at the fortune 500 level (in my opinion) - start there and it may have a chance to succeed. Grass roots support is not enough to take it forward.
My name is Ryan Peterson and I live in Victoria, BC, Canada. I just wanted to let every American know that this has hit Canada hard. My entire office is in shocked and you have our good thoughts and prayers. As your neighbor, I know we will do anything you ask of us. Right now, all I can do is pray for you all.
I know I can honestly say - that my entire nation is grieving for your loss.
If AOL wins this case it will set a horrid precedent for forum sites like this. Imagine if you posted a comment (your opinion) and you got sued for it. Yikes, what about freedeom of speach. Big company's seem to be afraid of the truth, I think online communities scare BIG corps., because we are the future.
There seems to be many small projects going on of note that could use the support of many minds. The people should stop competing against each other (I am against the idea that competition spurs the advancement of technology) and these smaller teams should start working together. Better to have one succeed than all of them fail.
On that same note....
It would seem to me that NASA should open their arms to the brains of the world. A true international project, would be an opensource project, where all minds of can offer their guidence and help for free. Where getting more for your dollar seems to be something NASA is interested in, it would seem that they should look towards our community.
If the "Space Community (NASA...Smaller Projects)" start working together we might see real results a lot faster.
-Angreal
P.S. I just want to walk on the Moon before I die - a small vacation.:-)
I think microsoft is heading into tough times. It seems like they are moving away from their core business (operating systems and productivity software). This is a tell-tale sign of a company searching for other revenue areas. First the XBOX (gaming) now they want to build chips (that is a broad statement).
My point is, that I believe Microsoft has lost their vision. They have gone from been a monopolistic gorilla, to a monopolistic sea gull -- shitting on everything.
The problem is if they succeed they just might become the next General Electric of the world. Now there is a scary thought.
Couple of point.
1) Square and EA are seperate companies. EA just markets some of their software in the US.
2) I own a Dreamcast and PS2 and NFL 2K1 is a much better game - further I would say the graphics are pretty close. Given the PS2 has 10 times the horsepower, I expected more.
3) 989 sports is owned by Sony. Gameday does not touch either frachinse. - Just my opinion.
I think the new number one third party developers will be Sega and EA. Although Square releases great software, they cannot compete with their franshices. I looking forward to EA finally having some competition with their sports titles. As we all know NFL 2K1 ruled Madden!:-)
Honestly, I was getting tired of only seeing EA sports titles on the PC and other consoles. I wonder what should I do with my Dreamcast?
Does anyone know what Sega is planning to do with their Dreamcast technology? It would be cool if they threw it our way.
WOW - The gaming business is taking on a whole new look. With Sega moving towards developing for other platforms, it is going to be interesting to see whether or not the Hardware manufacture's (MS/Nintendo/Sony) next generation console do all that well. You are going to be able to get the SAME games on all the platforms. Most of the major publishers in Japan and America seem to be supporting all the new consoles.
However, if I was going to bet on one, I would choose the Gamecube. Nintendo proved they can reach a mass audience by ditributing their own game content. Sony may have Square....but beyond that their does not seem to be many Playstation/2exclusive titles anymore. For all the marketing Hype MS's Xbox content will be made up of PC Ports.
So who do you think will win the next console race? Who will win?
However, I am not a luddite. The expansion of biotechnology is the new frontier of modern science. But, in the wrong hands it could be the end of the human race as we know it.
I find the thought of cloning people unnerving. Just becuase you can do something does not make is correct. I am not even talking about the ethics of it. Once we start cloning, then we are going to start genically modifying are children - are we going to start growing our children vats? It just does not seem natural. I don't think any of us can stop it, as human are by nature - explorers. But, I do caution recklessness with such a powerful tool.
Obviousily, I agree we should pursue Science....but cloning just seems wrong.
I am only asking the questions. Do patents really protect the small guy. The big monopolies have huge legal budgets. How could a small guy enforce his patent. Just because you have one does not mean your idea is protected. Lots of people have thought of great ideas, only to have them solen because someone patentened part/whole of the idea.
-Angreal
You do have a valid point. I am just wondering if their are differing opinions on the subject.
Stuff like that scares big corporations. They invest a lot of money securing and enforcing their patents. I sometimes wonder if the world be better of if we followed some more opensource principles. Where as all information is available for the good of society. I think most of slashdot readers would agree that the opensource movement is a step in that direction. People still make money on the ideas, but their enhancements and the evolution of an concept(idea) is not left to stagnat because of a stupid patent.
I wonder what of world would be like if their was not such thing as patents? Your thoughts.
I own a software/engineering development company in Canada. Most of our work is done internationally and the going rate depends on where you are doing business.
For Instance:
Middle East: $2500-3000 USD per day
India: $400 USD per day
USA: $1000-2000 USD per day
England: $2000-2500 USD per day
Russia: $1000 USD per day (take the money in advance.
etc.
Contracting really has to do with how well your market yourself. I know some really shitty programmers who make a lot of money in foriegn countries. To be honest, I have worked abroad for the travelling experience, not for the money. Leaving home for money -- is a little weak.
Agreed...Although Kubrick has made many beautiful (if not disturbing) films, he has never managed to reach a large audience (the masses). Not to say that I am complaining, as you have usually never heard of the best films of the year.
Lets hope the Internet solves many of the distribution problems small film makers have. It is amazing to see how many GREAT film get made, but never get released because some BIG-WIG at Paramont decides the masses would like or see the movie.
This is just my opinion...not a flame. I think slashdot is about posting topics of interest to geeks (if you classify the people reading this as that). I for one think the relationship of violence and geeks is an interesting topic and it should be discussed more. If this stereo type is not discussed in forums like these, then we will not have the opportunity to defend ourselves.
Furthermore, it is the job of all journalists to report on what they feel would be of interest to their readers. I am personally not interested in all the topics, so I don't read them all. Anyway, just a thought.
I think MACOS X is going to save MAC's ass. I have seen it is action and I have never been so giddy about a GUI since....well I guess I have never been giddy about a gui. Anyway, I wouldn't count MAC out yet. Much like the L-community they sit outside of the BOX and are try to change the way we do thing rather than just improve on it.
To manny companies (MS comes to mind) stick on a linear path, never stepping outside of their legacy. With Aqua Apple has made their first big step since the introduction of their MAC line of computers.
Great point. However, this type of lawsuit seems to be a product of American culture. Most of America's fortune 500 comapanies have one if not more of these lawsuits pending.
I think this is a result of lawyers going for a cash grab and probably has nothing to do with racism. I saw one of the ladies on Television telling a story of how she was told she would never move up in the company. That story did not sound like her boss was being racist, just sounded like he was trying to motivate her.
Whatever happens, I think 99.9999 percent of of companies have a 0 tolerence of racism and if their is racism then it is usually a result of one or two bad apples.
Good point, but Nintedo does have 3+ billion dollars in the bank (I believe) and Sony is one of the largest corporations in the world. It should be an intesting battle. They all have the money to try again.
The question is, even if Microsoft gets it right will they succeed? A great console, marketing and games does not ensure success. Look at the Dreamcast; they have Shemue, Sonic, Jet Grind Radio, Soul Calibur (great fighting game of all time) and other games...but they are failing miserably in Japan.
If microsoft gets some kick ass first party games they may have a winner, however, I personally am placing my bets on Nintendo to win the next Console war. If they produce AAA products with their main franchinses there is no way Sony/Microsoft/Sega can compete.
I am not a nintendo loyiest...just a gaming freak. I own a PS2(SSX is the only great game for that console) and a Dreamcast, although they are both great consoles in their own right, none of them have had a phenom title like Zelda/Mario/Golden Eye/Pokeman (laugh, but it sold 3.5++ million copies.)
Good luck to you Microsoft (competition only brings better product), but you are entering a crowded market.
I own a small business and I can honestly say that I would rather hire someone with 4 years of experience than someone with a PHD. In fact, I pay more as well. That is not to say going to school is not helpful or a great experience....To be honest with you all, I miss the lifestyle associated with going to school....women....:-)
Seriousily, do what you want to do. If you are doing what you love, money and happiness (however you define it) will always follow. Life has a funny habit of taking care of those people who work hard.
What is worse, controlling the desktop environment or the media you see on it? I really think the future of our children will be shaped by the marketing departments of AOL if consolidation like this continues to happen.
Thoughts?

Flamebait??? That is interesting. Suppose if anyone is proMS on any point they must be baiting people. For shame! Anyway, work for a company that uses contracters....When there is work they are busy and when there is none they sit at home. Risk vs. Reward...it is how the world works.
