for my capstone coures at MSU (Michigan State) just this spring we were required to GPL our final project. The project was for a group outside of the university and my prof wanted to make damn sure that they couldn reuse our code for a propritary project. My geuss is it depends on the university.. check and see what the contracts/legal dept. has to say about it.
If "widely available" just means that a private citizen can buy it, could not authorities instruct the tech manufacturers to make it available to the public at ridiculous prices, so that authorities don't need a warrant, while keeping the tech out of the hands of almost all citizens?
whats really scary is that this is what will probably happen.. and the only other people who (can afford/will want) this stuff are rich drug dealers trying to protect themselfs.. Thus escalating the situation even more.
good luck to MS. its a smart move. but they better make it secure.. i can just see virtual anarchy when^M^M^M^Mif peoples passports start dissapearing and credid card bills get maxed out. i duno.. i think i see script kiddie heaven. and if anything will force the general public off of MS products/services it will be the feeling of vulnerability.
read this article from the NYT about the porn industry then read the salon article:). might just give gamers a reason to chuckle at how trollish the salon article really is.
I just looked it up in "Fundamentals of Software Engineering" by Carlo Ghezzi, Mehdi Jazayeri, and Dino Mandroli.
it is "Mean Time to Failure" (MTTF) and its defined as "the average time interval between two failures".
sorry no good links but MTTF is what your looking for.
software does have a similar concept. i remember it from my software engineering course last fall. i belive it is "Mean Time to Failure";) go figure...
nah..
the reason is that companies are not willing to upgrade hardware and give faster connections untill they have to in order to compete.
I know i was able to find lots to do when i was living on camups with 10mb/s.. even though 28.8 was all i 'needed'. Im sure it will be the case with 100mb/s connections.
A lot of this is because people have recklessly assumed that they have the right to introduce mind-altering substances into their systems. Clearly, this is immoral and should be illegal, unless the substance in question has a billion-dollar Congressional lobby, in which case consumption of the substance is to be celebrated and encouraged. After all, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer is the American Way, and those who think differently should pack up and move to Havana. (Just don't try to bring back any of those cigars when you come back to visit.)
last i knew america had much less smoking than many other countries (italy was an ash tray when i lived there 2 years ago). and drinking.... hm... contries with no drinking age (no strict US laws) have much less abuse of drinking then america. maby thats not the problem either.
i dont know what causes the high prison rates. but i would put my money on poor education and poor parenting.
way to take the moral highground and yell about all the "immoral" stuff that people do.
honestly though... thoughts like that scare me.
my rights end where yours begin.. and vice-versa.. lets try not to push all of our ideals and beliefs on other people.

> bull$#!^ like this, we'll get stuck with more

there is an effective way of fighting this. its freeware and open source projects.
This move by MS is just going to help the cause by giving consumers a real good reason to switch.
isnt this one of the things that Microsoft is trying to do with the whole.Net thing... compiling every application on distribution.
its the way things are going. get used to it:)
hrm.. your applying english rules to another language .. bad idea, usualy doesnt work.

"the compsci needs to know how to make use of the hardware through software"
software(languages) designed and written by? comp-sci.. its just the ones that know more about hardware.

software fails also... ever get a blue screen?
Average time between failure is a mean value.
Time1+Time2+Time3/3 = mean Time
