What matters is whether the machine is cheaper when I order it without an OS
Well then you'll be glad to know that a Dell PE400SC can be configured to have "No OS" and the price drops by $499!

Is Windows Worth $45?

Have someone give you money that you can invest in a license I suppose. A bank maybe, if you think you could start a business with your software. The Trolltech guys need to eat too. And they're correct...development software for Linux costs nothing, but they have to pay for Windows, Visual Studio, etc. to support Windows.
It is true that in high school and college you are told what are reliable sources. But something interesting...most of the "reliable" sources (for a college anyway) are PAY services. They can't afford to have customers running away, so the librarians tell you these sites are the best.
What? The reason Windows is so popular is because of everyone who develops software for it. Microsoft is using inertia (and the difficulty and cost of porting to software to lower-cost platforms) as a way of charging developers more money. Developers are what make a platform successful, not the technology. Look at how popular Win95 was, and from a technical standpoint it *sucked*, but it had applications!
But they don't really make any money on it now. I can download all the tools I need straight from Sun's website.
The point of opening Java up is to let it become an official standard (much like ECMAScript or C#). Then other organizations (IBM, Eclipse, etc.) will be able to have more input on what goes into the official version of Java.
I do this already with Kerio Personal Firewall (and use ipchains on my Linux systems). No application is allowed out, but I am warned about it and can say yea or nay.
Question about the disposal of native resources: do I have to dispose widgets, or are they destroyed when their parent is? Because I haven't been calling.dispose() on all my text fields, tables, etc. I thought you only had to call dispose() when you wanted to, say, paint directly on an object (like with a Windows Device Context).
Eclipse is not deviating from the standard. They are simply adding choices. An MS J# application depends on.NET. An SWT application is still a regular Java app.
I'm glad those are the graphics for the PS2 version. Hopefully the GC/Xbox versions will look a lot better. The characters are way too blocky. The show's animation is very smooth, without lots of sharp angles.
It looks like the game is rendered normally, only with cheesy looking textures on the characters, instead of a good cel-shaded look like Legend of Zelda: Windwaker, or Viewtiful Joe.
These screenshots are very disappointing. Hopefully the gameplay will make up for it.
The contigency plan of OSS is that, *you have the source*. So if you use my OSS package, and I die the next day *someone else can support it*

Uhoh. Azureus is written in Java. Does that mean all Java apps will stop working?
No, she's using decimals as commas, the way they do in Europe
Or maybe a Plagiarism Detector!
Vice City was a PS2 exclusive for a *limited time*. Hopefully it will be the same with San Andreas.
Nivenh, I hope you follow up on this with the Patent Office. This is a real shame if it's all true.
Sweet! I haven't gotten to that part yet, thanks :)
Windows 9x/Me drivers don't work at all on Windows XP. What the hell are you smoking?
EXEs are completely different from drivers, and drivers do NOT migrate from 9x to NT kernels.
I was thinking truckers. This is Repugnant Shit out of Atlanta, there's a bear in the air on northbound 82
I wish there was a "-1 Asking for mod points" mod.
Microsoft already does this with J#. The issue here is Java being an open standard, just like C#, and not the soruce.

One time our dog came down with a bad case of bounty hunters, but we had him defetted and all was well.

Ah, thank you.

LOL. I guess that's the same for every game :)
I have a button like that on my MP3 player, it's labeled "pause."
