Hong Kong is crazy expensive, as are Beijing, Shanghai, etc. But China has much more to offer. In 2nd-tier cities it's still possible to get a decent >60m2 apartment for less than RMB 1000. That's with airco, furnished and often less than an hour by train from HK/SH/BJ if you really feel you want to go there.

  4. China on How a Programmer Gets By On $16K/Yr: He Moves to Malaysia · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've been doing this in China for the last 7 years. The good thing here is that live is very scalable. If income is low you relocate to the countryside where you get by quite decently on $100/month and 4M Internet. If income rises you move towards bigger cities where you can spend over $10.000/month and have FTTH if you must.

And by scalability I don't just mean the living expenses. Also moving from place to place is dead easy. I arrive in a place and spend a day if not just a few hours on finding and renting a flat. I'll move in that same night or the next day and have my stuff arrive by truck a few days later.

If you're a remotely political person or care mildly about human rights, China may not be for you. For the average person however who just wants to work the least amount possible and yet have her/his dinner cooked, house cleaned and pussy licked/dick sucked as if she/he were queen/king, it's an awesome place.

1-3? Living in China for 7+ years now I can tell you that probably more than 90% of them support the government. Sure they'll bitch and moan about their leades, but if you ask them which system they would prefer (China, US or something European) they're sticking to the Chinese system.

IMHO, this is no different from most western countries. We complain about our governments but very few of us would opt for the system of another country, even if that system is fairly similar to ours.

There's government and then there's government. The same thing happens in the US and elsewhere.

It's very possible that lower level government officials are pulling this off. Whether that's for their own misguided ideas or as a favor to a business friend doesn't really matter.

Don't forget the CCP has over 80 million members. That's a lot of people pulling strings and effecting actions that aren't necessarily following guidelines of whatever you would see as the central government.

The only reason I was able to switch from Linux to OS/X on my desktop is exactly because it has a decent command-line.

From a customer support perspective I can tell you it's significantly easier to support an OS/X user than a Windows user as well. Why? Because I can send someone a string of commands and the can copy&paste the result back to. On Windows you have to enter each command one, often can't find a suitable command and, probably the worst, it's non-trivial for a regular use to copy&paste the output.

He started mixing up different train classes on the same track. This meant that slower tracks had to be tacking off track at specific locations to let faster trains pass.
