Oracle still does the same thing. You can download their database (full enterprise edition) for free, for development use.

However, this does not grant you a license to use the database in a production environment (say, powering your Config Management software).

The new "free" versions grant you the license to use it in production environments.

I imagine IBM's new free version is sort of the same thing (I read the article, but have not yet reviewed the license).

I find the GUI designer part of the IDE to be very helpful. I agree that one should know that when they drag a text box onto their form/canvas/window/whatever it creates an instance of the textbox class in the form source file, and sets the properties, etc.

However, when you are building an application with many modules or hundreds of screens it would take so much more time to manually code the layout. Why spend all this extra time to manually type out the same code the tool will generate for you anyhow?

I do see your (and everyone else's) point. Again, I totally believe that you need to understand what's going on and what the tool is doing for you. Same way you should know how to do all the arithmetic and equations when you use the calculator.

Looking to go back and start doing it more. I much prefer to kill what I eat, and venison tastes so much better than cow, IMO. Plus, I know the meat isn't going to be wasted or thrown out because it sat around too long without being bought.

Most people just go to the grocery store and pick up a pound or two of hamburger, or a few steaks. Most have never probably even seen a cow except on television. I am not saying you should worship cows, but just a little smidgen of respect for the life it gave so you could eat isn't too much to ask.

    >>One database per server. Index creation gets logged and can fail (hanging indefintely) if the log fills up. The 'create database' command doesn't yield a functional database.

Oracle's concept of "databases" is different than some other vendors. You can have multiple databases per server. An oracle database is structured similar to:

    Database Server
    |-Instance 1
    |-User1's Schema
    |-Table 1
    |-Table 2
    |-User2's Schema
    |-Table A
    |-Procedure B
    |-Instance 2
    |-User 10's Schema

    etc..

Simply creating a new user gives you a "new database" so to speak. As each user can create his own tables, procedures, packages, views, sequences, indexes, etc.

-Can Sql Server run on a "grid"?
-Can Sql server let you write your triggers/procedures in Java?
-Does Sql Server support integrated debugging of Transact-SQL (watches, breakpoints, step into, over, out of code)?
-No Sequences in SQL Server? I guess select max(column) will have to do until your value gets too large for the column.
