D-Wave sounds like a classic scam to lure investors. IF they really had a working QC, they could patent the tech and license the patents for Billions of dollars.
All they're doing is saying 'Trust me, it works, ignore the man under the table'.
Randi's pretty cool. I've seen his lectures live a couple of times; very entertaining. He contributes a segment to the SGU podcast each week. The SGU rocks! http://www.theskepticsguide.org/
I haven't seen any 'independent' tests yet where the machines contained identical hardware besides the MB and CPU. With that said, the Core Duo looks like a winner, and it looks like Intel will have the performance crown for the first time in a few years. It will be interesting to see how AMD's K8L part on 65NM will do, but that thing won't ship until next year.
Still, IMHO, Intel will never recover to its pre P4 glory days. Before the K8 chips became smash hits in the enterprise, NO ONE seriousely considered AMD for a business app. That mind share has shifted. AMD is now viewed as at least Intel's Equal in terms of performance and stability.
Your analogy with Microsoft is a bit flawed. MSFT was able to leverage its OS monopoly to crowd Netscape out. CPUs are Intel's cash cow. Intel can't give them away for free to crush AMD.
It's great to see Intel back in the game, it should drive down the prices of the high end desktop CPUs and force AMD to innovate more quickly. They've been napping for the past couple of years as well...
AMD doesn't need ATI's tech or headaches. The best chipsets for AMD's systems currently come from Nvidia; why would AMD want to piss them off? Nvidia's founder worked at AMD in the 80s and the 2 companies have a pretty close relationship. I can see a merger with Nvidia making sense, but buying ATI would be a blunder.
When I started www.bentley.edu in 1993, all freshman were required to have laptops. The college had reasonable lease rates for people who couldn't afford to buy one. All dorm rooms were also wired with ethernet.
Yeah, that's one hell of a slippery slope (video card bandit -> rapist and murderer).
I'd rat him out if he was stealing from individuals, not multi billion dollar corps who already price in such thefts.
I'd also have the balls to talk to him first and give him a chane to stop doing what he's doing.
There's less obligation to a 'fellow student' than to a 'friend'. And it sounds like this was a habbit with this person. I don't equate what you did with what the OP did.
He sounds like he'd be one of those RAs in college who'd sniff under the door to see is kids were smoking pot just so he could bust them?
The poster appantly didn't try talking to his 'friend' and just turned him in. If you don't see anything wrong with that, then you're a person that I wouldn't want as a friend.
I've been friends with some people for 15+ years, and I know that they have my back, and I have theirs. I sure as hell wouldn't turn them in because they ripped off a BB or CC for $450.00
AFAIK, the only thing that the placebo effect changes is the way that people feel. If you run objective, quantifiable tests, the placebo effect vanishes. But yeah, it's better to drink some 'homeopathic' water than insist that a doctor prescribe an antibiotic for a viral disease.
Although there are some Christian cults that won't use traditional medicine, the largest users of alternative 'medicines' are members of the 'woo woo' crowd. People who believe in psychics, people believe that if it's 'all natural' then it's good for you, people who believe that spells and talismans will cure them, etc. The thing that they have in common is that they're pretty damn gullible. Then there's the paranoid crowd who thinks that there's a huge conspiracy between doctors and drug companies to not cure people, etc. I think that some people just like to believe is weird sh!t. Of course it doesn't help when CVS is selling 'homeopathic medicines.'
At least while the lawsuit is ongoing, Intel will likely be more careful about its practices, so vendors might offer more AMD systems. I doubt that Dell will jump on board, but it's be nice to see some Thinkpad or Viao A64 based systems.
In the end, Intel will pay a fine and agree to not do anymore what they never admitted to doing in the first place.

I bet that in 2 or 3 years we'll be reading a story like this about D-Wave.

It's very entertaining and a great way to sharpen those critical thinking skills.

Currently, at higher levels, a fight between the party and a group of enemies can easily last a couple of hours.
How has combat been streamlined?
"Name this continent"
"Asia"
Skeptic(ism) is not a religion or a cult; it's a way of looking at the world and applying critical thinking.

Given what happpend in the season 3 finale, it's obvious that the Cylons have had contact with Earth already.
It's during the Fraser Cain and Pamela Gay interview segment.c astinfo.asp?pid=95

This bill was as much about making it an hour brighter on Halloween, so that more candy would be sold, than it was about saving power...

Looks like the analyst needed to justify his price upgrade so he started the rumor.

Looks like it's still available for sale from this place. Great for running.
I agree 100%
But it's not like his friend was asking him to cover for him or hide the loot.
He wasn't asking him to become an accessory to this.
Yeah, the lesson learned is not to be very careful about the friends you keep.
Would you turn him in for lifing a $.25 pack of gum?
Personally,
Yeah, that's one hell of a slippery slope (video card bandit -> rapist and murderer).
I'd rat him out if he was stealing from individuals, not multi billion dollar corps who already price in such thefts.

Is that like posting anonynously ;-) ?
Please explain to me how narcing on your friends is considered 'personal responsibility'?
You're a fair weather friend at best.
The poster appantly didn't try talking to his 'friend' and just turned him in.

You went to the store and snitched on your 'friend'?
Did you talk to him about it before you ratted him out?
Did you lose any money because of what he did?
I'm not condoning what your friend did, but IMHO, what you did is MUCH worse. I hope that he kicked your ass.

It hasn't been uploaded to alt.binaries.e-books.rpg yet.
The case will be thrown out of court, but she'll have thousands of new clients.
/. is of course duing its part in this promotion.
