Are we still using QuakeIII as a benchmark? How about a little less worry about the hardware, and a little more renovation on the software. Seriously, what's new in the past couple of years?
How many people would push the button with no financial incentive at all, just for the visceral experience in and of itself. Think about it, a button, by the sidewalk with a sign that says, 'Push this and someone dies.' I wonder how many people would.
Take into account how many are still in operation, how many have been canabalized to make another new computer, (sold as new?) and how many have been 'sold' to retailers as opposed to homes. How about a better number like, 'X number of computers currently in operation worldwide.'
Or is this a hint of further slumps in the IT industry headed our way? "This just in: Slashdot posts stories about housing opportunities for sacked IT folks..."
..who sees this as a possible plant by RIAA execs themselves? They knew how highly anticipated this release was, they knew, in this day and age, if copies hit the net they'd be traded far and wide, they knew this would be the perfect way to say, "see! Piracy! this must stop!". Sort of seems like we may be playing into their hands doesn't it?
...and don't want to rehash the whole 'Jurassic Park' cliche'. I have to believe that a species is extinct for a reason. Yes, maybe it's because Man destroyed their habitat or hunted them to extinction, but the fact remains, they're extinct, they could not adapt for survival. Surely there's a reason for that? This can't end well.
In Birmingham, Al, they're pushing their 'services' really hard right now. If you listen to their radio ads, they're using a combination of FUD and 'keep up with the Jones' attitude', (everyone else is doing this). The scary thing is how everyone keeps coming up to me saying, 'you need to talk to these guys, they'll check all of your stuff for you, and tell you what you need to do.' Problem is, I'm a Linux coder, there's no M$oft software in my shop 'cept for my Ipaq. They seem to have taken a 'someone needs to fill this void, we'll be the self appointed police.' kind of attitude.
We've all seen pulp fucktion marketed through FUD before. Sensationalistic news sells. Look at the plethora of Jon Benet Ramsay books after the story broke. This is just supermarket tabloid trash.
Duh! As someone who's been running OSX since DP3 I think I have a little perspective on this. They've acheived what they wanted because now they have a product ready to ship, the only thing that begins on march 24th are a series of slipshod patches and knee-jerk reactions to media criticism. Yes, Darwin is the core of OSX, enough was developed on that platform to further the development of OSX itself. Look at Apple's history of sudden abandonment of their projects and then tell me to inform myself.

A new suit due to the fact that this'll make it even easier for more people to pirate even MORE content.
Shipping on the new iPods is--> 5 to 7 weeks! Fuck that!
Uncle Bill realizes that one copy of Windows hasn't been sold for each of those Billion PC's?

Slashdot posts polls to see how many readers actually read the articles in the form of an article itself....seriously people, read before you post...

R2-D2 was able to fetch beer in the early 80's. I don't see how this is new.

Steve Jobs states, "Just because it's a little faster, one must remember that Megahertz counts for nothing when experiencing the joy of using a Mac."

why keep Darwin around after it served it's purpose?
Is that you rarely read about cases like this on the front page, usually they're buried in the back pages. Media control is real people.
