    Actually there are *three* concurrent events. The third is Milliwatt FD, which has the same basic rules as ARRL FD, but power categories are 100 mW and less.

    1800 UTC Saturday to 1800 UTC Sunday, if you set up ahead of time. If you set up starting at 1800 Saturday, you can operate until 2100 UTC Sunday.

    I may have that last end time wrong, but you are allowed an extended operating period if you wait to set up until after FD starts.

    I'll second TigerDirect with a coupla of caveats. Get the order entry person to tell you if an item is in stock--stuff that goes on back order with them can take many weeks to get filled.

    The good thing about building your own is that you know *exactly* what you are getting--what the MoBo is capable of, the specifics of the drives, video cards, etc., everthing down to whether the power supply is approved for your CPU or not [thinking Athlon here].

    Build your own, find the newsgroups that support your hardware, and you won't regret it.

    . . .we've been talking about avoiding RF-fired bulbs in ham radio world for a couple of years now. This is news? Did anyone bother to get a spectrum analyzer near one of these bulbs? Will they really be putting out that much radiation at 2.4 GHz?

    Most of the concern in the past has been that they will interfere with the HF spectrum [2-30 *MHz*]. The article reads a bit like Chicken Little to me. . .

    . . .the obligatory "Ditch NT4 Server for *BSD" [which I know in reality won't happen], do something like this:

    - create individual folders on the server for all personnel who have logins.

    - tweak all induhvidual's programs so that they save everything on the server by default, and that they open the folder on the server by default.

    - Back up the server.

    Keeping everything server-centric has many advantages, most of which you already know. the others you will learn.

    Yup--check out www.nasa.gov, and go the story about the eclipse ["weird sunset" is the name, IIRC]. There is a table that covers some cities that might fall in the same general time zone as Iowa. But, being originally from Wisconsin, I know that most of Iowa is in the Twilight Zone. . .

    . . .that no one at the South Pole regularly sees the Aurora. AFAIK, what is seen as Aurora Borealis at the North Pole is mirrored at the South Pole. Therefore, what you see at the North Pole is a mirror image of what could be seen at the South Pole at the very same time.

    Although, after reading this site, it sounds more like it *can* happen, vs it *always* happens.

    laughable to put it in the same category as an
    actual scientific theory, which, while it may be
    incomplete, is a damned sight better than "a
    superhero from outer space did it".

    There's no doubt a good reason why Scientific Creationism is found in the Library of Congress classification system with the prefix of BS.

    True. Very true. I bought an AMD system because I like the underdog, and the product rocks. The thing is that Intel's not kosher either.

    So, in light of this, what the hell kinda platform shall I be using? I'm at a loss.

    Since the company I work for is going to merge with the company that bought DEC's alpha, I might be able to score a cheapo True-64 machine at home?
