Well unfortunately, until my credit union updated their website, it was only compatible with IE for online banking. Now it works with NS 4.7x + 6.2. It conveniently ignores 6.0 through 6.1:)
MD portables are 1/3 - 1/6th the cost of a DAT recorder, and the media is the same price.
And for interviews where it's just voice, the compression isn't an issue...voice is right in the middle, and compression only affects the highest and lowest ends (on MD, the highest more than the low, the low is near-perfect).
Regardless of what that says, all the links and files are still there. Listen for yourself. Don't recommend using the encoder unless you have 400 PII or better.
VQF at 96kbps kills both Ogg and mp3 quality-wise at 128kbps, and mp3 a run for it's money at 256kbps (though it's very system-intensive). It's a shame it never caught on. Open source too!
I remember reading somewhere that DVD players often are unable to read CD-R's, but are able to read CD-RW's just fine, due to the specifications of the laser. Also, standalone CD players usually have no trouble with CD-R's, but the fact that this is a DVD might explain the CD-R difficulty. Hopefully someone has more technical information on the issue than I do.

Stay away from their consumer electronics though...take it from a former tech support rep (me).

Someone please meta-mod this. Tis no troll!
Chris
Or more simply (and more encompasing), in the worlds of Jello Biafra:
"Outlaw evolution, and only outlaws will evolve."
Why is this modded as flamebait? I happen to agree, going to mod me down?
