http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unix.html - command line seti@home download page. The Windows version works with all versions 95 (95 with winsock 2 upgrade) and greater. And there are versions for just about every flavor of Unix under the Sun (haw haw, I made a funny!), along with Mac.
Everyone who wants to get packets done fast should run this version. I upgraded from a 400mhz PII/128MB RAM/Voodoo Banshee 16mb/Win 98 to Athlon XP 1700+/256MB RAM/Geforce 2 MX 400 64 MB/Win 2k and saw no significant improvement. I tried the command line version and cut time per packet down by 83%.
Maybe you won't see as much improvement as me, but you'll definitely see some, I guarantee.
I would even sign a contract with early termination fees! I am a Mandrake User. I want to support them. I would like to have Star Office (thought Open Office and KOffice suit my needs). I can't afford a 60/120 lump sum payment right now. If they want to make me sign a contract stating that I owe them 50 or 100% of the year's remaining balance if I terminate early, so be it because I have no intentions of terminating early!
I'm in the same boat as you. I pleaded with them to institute such a monthly payment system (I could even afford the silver membership if it was broken down monthly, especially since it would get me a download of Star Office) but to no avail thusfar...
Well, my experience building my own machines is limited (just built my first), but judging from my own and associates' experiences (including my 1 1/2 years in telephone tech support), I would disagree. I have owned 2 different boxed systems and when comparing them to others, even the same model numbers, it seems that most manufacturers put in whatever components they can get the cheapest at the time of building the machine, and I have certainly had my problems with the prebuilt machines. On the other hand, I picked all top-quality components for the system I built, if not bleeding edge (Athalon XP 1700+, Soyo Dragon Plus, Yamaha CD-RW, Sony DVD, Western Digital HD w/8MB Cache, eVGA GeForce 2 MX 400 64 MB, Teac FDD, Lian Li case, Enermax power supply, rounded IDE + floppy cables) and I haven't had one problem that wasn't a configuration issue. Once I got everything configured properly it's been smooth sailing...now, I'd expect that if I used cheaper shit, I would probably have more problems.
In reality, if you've got an ATA66/AGP4X (for example) mobo and ATA66 drives and AGP4X vid card that are of good quality, you shouldn't have any problems.
Actually, mini-series adaptations aren't ALWAYS bad. My fiance got me into the 6 part, 5 hour Pride and Prejudice mini-series, which apparently does the whole book word-for-word. She has loved Jane Austen since she was a kid and she loves the mini-series (I just bought her the DVD. Yay MPAA!), and I must admit that I find it quite enjoyable too.
I'm sure there must be some others that aren't all bad. Of course, as opposed to LOTR, Jane Austen novels don't require a lot of special effects:)
I believe I have the same "Linux Complete" book you have (Sybex), though I purchased it new for $20, also at B+N. Great reference for the price. And I am disappointed by the lack of Mandrake books not because it limits my functionality (at least now), but because a reference book can be a great way to get people into Linux, since you don't have to d/l ISO's (or find a site)...you just have to be in a bookstore, pick up the book, and whammo! It comes with the OS too. This reason alone is why I ALMOST went Red Hat as opposed to Mandrake, but in the end I chose Mandrake because of their extensive online support, and the fact that the components they use are more up-to-date.
I wondered the same thing. It also doesn't make sense because they have been gravitating towards Open Office as of late, and it seems a bit redundant to me to include both.
Of course, I'm running Mozilla 0.9.9 as my default browser and Netscape 6.2.1 as a backup in case the former crashes, so maybe it's not too redundant!

I would tend to agree, based on my own experiences. Of course, perhaps he's running something "exotic" (or extremely old/new). I have an HP DJ932c and installing it to LM 8.1 was easier than in Win 98 SE, the OS it was created for!
Of course, it's just as easy now that I'm running Win 2k pro, but I was mucho impressed running LM 8.1 on my PII 400/128MB PC100 RAM/16.6GB HD system, and the only reason I haven't installed it on my new box is because I knew that 8.2 was imminent and it would save me the hassle of installing 2x. My plans are to run a tri-boot Win 2k pro/XP pro/LM 8.2 on my Soyo Dragon+/Athalon 1700+/256MB DDR RAM/WD 120GB HD w/8MB cache system (only running XP because my telephone tech support job requires me to be familiar with it).
Mandrake rocks. Wish there could be some Mandrake-centric books though. (EVERYTHING is Red Hat!!!)
"Saying that 'the Germans were hardly the best skaters in the Olympics' would not be the same as saying 'the German skaters were amoung the worst in the Olympics.'"
Bad example if you're trying to prove your point, because if the Germans are not among the best, then, based from that generalization (they're not the best, nor are they among the best), most of the non-Germans are better, right (the best is inherantly better than the non-best, by definition of the word)? Which means, used in comparison like you did, if rich people are hardly the most hard working, then most of the non-rich therefore are harder working than the rich:)
I'm nit-picking, but I know I'm right.
"My writing skills seem fine even when I review what I wrote. That you misinterpreted what I wrote is not a reflection on me."
If it was just me, I would agree. But looking at all the posts below your original and above this, indicate that it's not just me, and many reacted the same way as I did.
*snipped article showing that white collar makes more than blue collar* "P.S. $50K/ year is not my idea of being paid "quite well" for hard work."
Are you socialist? Not that it matters, I'm just curious because socialists (in general, yes I'm generalizing) often try to further their agenda by pointing out how much more CEO's and such make than the blue collar workers and what an injustice that is. I have read much of the socialist propaganda spread around on large campuses and they always make that point. The point was made in previous posts about supply and demand. Good CEO's, especially ones with "name power" (like Jack Welch, for instance) are low in supply (1) and high in demand (just about any company would love to have him as an executive). This drives his price up. However, "coal mine worker" or "construction" is an entry-level job that anyone who is physically able can receive on-the-job training for and perform, therefore the supply (thousands) roughly equals the demand, creating a lower price. It's basic economics.
And $50k/year is over $24/hr for a 40 hour work week. I think that's pretty damn good pay for anything that doesn't require 4 years of school to be hired for. What do you think when put into perspective like that? I'll bet you never made anywhere close to 24/hr before you got your degree, if you even do now (don't know if you have a degree/don't know your line of work/don't know your pay/don't want to).
If you want to talk unfairness in wages, lets talk about racism/sexism, or how the people responsible for the future of our country (teachers) are paid next to nothing. I think we can both agree on those two issues.
But griping about white collar vs. blue collar is totally ignorant and irrelevant.
My reading skills are fine, your communications ones are off. This is what you said:
"The wealthiest people in the world are hardly the most hard-working."
To me, and many others that have replied, you were implying that those who are wealthy have not worked as hard as those who are not, using the examples of coal miners and construction workers (both of which are not really "low paying" because of the risk, they actually pay quite well) as "hard working non-rich" people.
So before insulting my reading skills, you may want to reread your own posts before hitting that submit button, and thinking about how your ideas may be viewed by others.
This post is not flamebait, the parent (modded at +5 insightful as of writing) is. To say that any one industry collectively works harder than another is beyond ignorant...I can't even come up with a word for that person.
Some "work" is physical, some "work" is mental, some is a little of both, some is repetitious, some isn't...there's no "work level scale" and physical laborers are not the only hard workers of the world!

Yes, damn that regulation. Ever heard the old adage "You can take a horse to water, but you can't make him drink"? They forced car manufacturers to put seat belts in cars. Did that mean that everyone started wearing seatbelts? Apparently not, because then legislation was created to force people to wear seatbelts, and now we have the situation where cops are doing mandatory checkpoints to see if people are wearing seatbelts, and ticketing them if they aren't. Seatbelts have been known to cause death as well, though it is certainly not as common as its ability to save lives.
So under that thinking, why doesn't government force EVERYBODY to do the right thing? Why don't they force people to take any homeless man in the street into their home? Why don't they force you to give your pocket change to the Salvation Army? Why don't they force you to spend an hour per week doing volunteer work? Because free will of people is a GOOD THING.
Legislation wasn't needed to put a seatbelt in every car...money spent by consumers could easily have done that. Just as people purchase cars with airbags over those that don't today, the same thing would have happened with seatbelts given the chance.
