I normally do not reply to ACs,but:

    2011 EPS 2.39
    2012 EPS 2.13
    2013 EPS 1.87 (est)

EPS growth rate -4% vs. the semiconductor industry 6.9%

I'd say that is sagging - not a collapse, but sagging, especially for long term investors who are used to double digit gains from the Wintel days

  2. Re:Intel was not an option on Opinion: Apple Should Have Gone With Intel Instead of TSMC · · Score: 1

Of course it is an option.

Intel's profits have been sagging for a few years due to the drop in PC sales, which is their core business. They have been unsuccessful for the most part in cracking the mobile device marker despite a lot of effort.

Investors have been pushing management to take some of their world class factories and make money fabbing chips for other companies, something that would have a big impact on their bottom line since their manufacturing technology is a generation ahead of everyone else and therefor would command a premium.

Intel has already signed fab agreements with other companies and it has been common knowledge for a while that Intel and Apple were in talks about just such a deal: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Foundry-manufacturing-Apple-Intel-14nm,21400.html

Not heading in this direction would have caused shareholder revolt.

I starting seeing this problem around 8:30 am est and tried to search the web for information about it, to see if it was something specific to my computer/isp/settings.

I guess that is a big limitation of the internet - it's very hard to find information about events as they happen since:
    1. Search indexes need to be updated, which takes time
    2. Community sites need to wait for stories to be submitted and edited or dug up
    3. Major news organizations only rush stories with mass appeal.

I haven't used IRC in a while - maybe it would be better for disseminating breaking tech news? (or I should check out twitter)

  6. Book Price is not the problem on No, David Pogue, Ebook Piracy Is Not a Given · · Score: 1

I love to read - especially SciFi, but I would never buy an electronic book.

I have a stack of about 10 books I want to get to right now and I don't think I'm unusual.

The cost of the books is not the issue - I don't think I've ever passed over a book that looked interesting due to cost - it's time that is the scarcity.

The main benefit that eReaders provide - the ability to store many books - is not a problem for most people and they add the issues of poor readability and a fragile/expensive device.

I think audiobooks are the only technology that addresses reader's actual problem - trying to fit in more books in less and less free time. (If you are willing to give up the actual reading part).

I think eBooks are and will always be a solution looking for a problem.

One thing I have to point out, however. It has been my experience that most companies to not outsource their leading edge, business advantage software. They outsource the routine maintenance and standard operations software. For these systems, "creativity" is not as important as process, so the outsourcing process works well.

The thing western software developers need to recognize is this: there will always be jobs for great programmers. What you have to ask yourself is "am I a great programmer?". If the answer is yes, you having nothing to fear from outsourcing. If the answer is no, you need to develop other skills (system design, customer liaison, etc) or maybe change careers.

The writing is on the wall. If you are a mediocre programmer and have no ambition to move up the technical ladder, you job will disappear.

Bawhhahhahha! If only this were true! Let me tell you my tale of woe.

My AMEX card number was obtained by someone, somehow and they used it to sign up for 2 AOL accounts.

When I received the bill, I called AMEX and they gave me the same line they gave you. Next month, charges again - called AMEX again (30 min hold) - said they would take care of the fraud, but I asked for a new card number to be sure. OK - they sent me a new card.

Next month - more charges! I called again - how can they get my new card number? The AMEX operator told me that AOL subscribes to a service that UPDATES THEM WITH THE NEW CARD NUMBER when a "subscriber" changes the number.

Six months of this and I was finally told by AMEX that I had to call AOL (who I have never dealt with) and cancel the account and see if I can find out the screen name and phone number of the unauthorized user. I called AOL and was hung up on three times and spent 30 minutes on hold to be told they could not give me any information on the account they were charging me for for "privacy reasons", but they could cancel it and I would only be liable for the charges up to that day!

AMEX said - we will see what we can do but AOL is hard to deal with. That is the story so far - see how well your CC takes care of fraudulant charges for you!

A more realistic approach for most people would be to:
    1) Stop buying items you don't really need.
    2) Get out of debt ASAP
    3) Live on half your pay and invest the rest. It's easier than it seems once you do 1 and 2.
    4) Keep your job until you can live off your investments. If you follow steps 1,2 and 3, it will happen faster than you expect.
Knowing the day is coming soon can help reduce the stress of your current job.

One technique that works well to get the whole family on board for step 1:
3 months after all purchases over some amount (e.g. $50), re-assess the value of the item.
Ask yourself, am I happy with the item or would I rather have my money back?
You'd be surprised how this can adjust your purchasing decisions.
