  1. My uptime stats differ on Unreliable Linux Dumped from Crest Electronics · · Score: 1

    My current current uptimes:
    Linux Redhat ES 2.1 = 330 days
    Mandrake 9.2 = 192 days, 245 days
    Windows Server 2000 = 23 days, 40 days, 33 days, 70 days

Although Linux may not be the right choice for every job, it certainly seems that way to me.

Speaking as someone who administers a small company that has been standardized on first Netscape then the Mozilla suite for many years, it will take some time for me to learn whatever I will need to in order to replace the suite with the separate components of FF and TB. Then after all the machines are set up, (I'm assuming I will be able to find a way to push the install through Active Directory), I'll have to deal with the training issues: "where's this, where's that?". Then don't even start the discussion about plugins - there's folks in every building with some kind of plugin that will need to be set up (Web developer, enigmail, etc.) Although I'm excited about FF/TB, my personal experience with FF has been lackluster - mysterious crashes and such while the Mozilla suite has been rock solid (if a little slow).

I'm in the same boat. Believe it or not we're up to almost 100 employees and there's still no budget! (Perhaps 45 machines now?). I work very closely with the owners to plan expansion and upgrade, and what we all decide is needed to keep ahead - we get. I've got a few spreadsheets I keep track of hardware in and every year I upgrade one department or another. One key for me was getting a networking firm we could count on for advice and wiring work, this way I can concentrate on the bigger issues (database and integration) and not be up in the cielings during upgrades.

Your 'answer' doesn't work in my company. We've standardized on Mozilla - for the people who were really stubborn about using IE, ever since I changed the desktop icon for Mozilla to the little blue IE icon instead, there haven't been many complaints. One guy insists IE is faster (which I confirmed on his box), but I can't use Firefox since I need the full suite (to replace Outlook also :)

Um, what am I missing here? I don't see any video inputs on the Mac mini. How do you do digital video recording (DVR) if you can't input the video? Are there firewire/USB devices that will allow this? Somebody enlighten me here, I am still trying to decide between the Mac mini and build-my-own Freevo/MythTV linux box for the living room!

Firefox's search bar has a dropdown (at least in my 1.0 preview release) to allow you to change the search engine to Amazon, dictionary.com, ebay, Yahoo *and* add engines of your choice. They're all "specially branded" in my install if you can call it that - its just a "favicon.ico" file.

  9. Re:Bug fixes on AbiWord 2.2 Unleashed · · Score: 3, Interesting

This much is true. The response from the team was immediate. I had downloaded a release from the site, found an issue with text selection highlighting not working as expected and reported it that night through their Bugzilla reporting system. Turns out they had fixed the issue in 2.1.99 but it wasn't available on the site for download for OSX so they sent me a link to 2.2.0 which did indeed fix that issue for me. So to be fair, they had already identified and corrected the issue I logged before I logged it. Still, Abiword rocks all over running OO in X Windows on my iBook (the bloat!), looks good, runs fast and shows real promise. I'm not a big fan of office "suites", I just need a decent word processor and a spreadsheet as easy to use as Excel. As a confirmed anti-MS person, I have to admit that Excel is a damn good product.

I've been using 2.2.0 for a few weeks after receiving a link to it from the Abisource team (I reported a problem which the new version fixed) and I've been comparing it with MS Office v.X Word on my 700MHz iBook. I've had troubles with images in AbiWord. I won't go into it but suffice to say I haven't had good luck opening doc files with images. It also seems to have problems with long documents - it really bogs down compared to Word. The fonts are really nice and crisp though on my machine, nicer than my version of Word (admitedly not the latest version of Word). Abiword does still crash occassionally on my OSX10.3.6 though less than in past versions. I will continue to follow AbiWord as it clearly has promise, but its still not replacing Word for me yet.

As a LAN admin of a small 50+ machine network in the manufacturing sector (yes, there still are manufacturers in the USA). I have speak up to say that I for one have not locked everyone down as the "network nazis" above have done. Our firm is very creative (engineering heavy) and using and playing with new software is just too much fun. It was far easier to standardize on Mozilla (we started with Netscape back in 1996 but I've stayed on the bleeding edge). We have had only two compromised machines in all this time and both were due to users who *refused* to use Mozilla and went out of their way to install and use IE over my objections. I explained the situation to the boss and its now official company policy to use Mozilla only! (we use it for web/email/in-house IRC). In fact, you can be reprimanded for using IE!

It doesn't function as a "removeable" drive or provide that kind of functionality on XP either as far as i can tell you need the Canon software to transfer to and from XP. Can someone set me straight there?

We used to use Netscape, but migrated to Mozilla at 1.2 and are currently at 1.31. The email client is GREAT, I prefer it to Outlook. Most users don't know anything else since we have always used a Mozilla-like client. One user complained after switching from Outlook (I think it was a case of being used to it, and not having enough compu-savvy to be comfortable with the switch) and that person uses Outlook to this day. Interestingly enough, he is the only one who ever gets hit with email viruses ;-) The Junk filter is nice, and we use a web based calendaring solution from http://brownbearsw.com and a Perl based message board (Yabb) for sharing notes on stuff.

The real strength of linux is that every box is so different! I don't necessarily use sendmail, or pine, or fetchmail, or balsa or netscape or a zillion other variants of email related software so I am less likely to be targeted than the Outlook using drone. Why? Cuz its just not as much fun to write a virus that targets only 0.05% of a community of users. Microsoft's sameness is what makes it dominant (for now?) but it is an achilles heel.
