If there is life there, and it's not of Earth origin, will it have DNA at all? Just because all life here has it doesn't mean that Martian-origin life will.
TimeWarner RoadRunner sent a letter out this week to all subscribers informing us that as of October 1, 2001, our monthly bill is going up from $39.95/month to $44.95/month. They go on to tell us what great guys they are because this is the first ever rate increase (in probably 4 years of service locally) and that this is money to fund infrastructure improvements.
However, there haven't been any infrastructure improvements that anyone's seen, bandwidth is now pretty harshly capped, especially on the upstream, and mail service gets flaky for some people on a regular basis.
I have a co-worker who hasn't had a RR connection for a month! They keep sending techs out, they've replaced everything in her house and it still flakes out an hour after the tech leaves! More than once they've been told "we'll send our top person out here to look at it" and that never happens. RR refuses to check anything beyond the walls of their house, but now that everything's been replaced with known good equipment, it's fairly obvious the problem isn't there.
Meanwhile, they're dropping the price of a second IP from $10/month to $5/month - so if you had already bought one, you won't see any price change in your bill. I think they know a very large number of people are running NAT boxes & routers and want to push them away from it.
Everything they're doing these days they claim to be a result of lost ad revenue, and in their cost-cutting desperation, they are doing things that...further reduce ad revenue!. Their management has no clue about how to service what people truly want, and pay only lip service to those who spell out very clearly what would make their services better.
I've never even heard of this site/service, and I'm on ZDNet constantly. More stupidity...they apparently don't market it or they ruined it to the point where it's not worth mentioning. Maybe they need to look within to find out why it's not doing well.
How about in a battery that won't break your back lugging it through the airport. I want 8-10 hours out of something I can carry!. Keep the total system weight under 8 pounds, give me that battery life, and I'll think about it.
Those who do not understand history are condemned to repeat it
I think IBM knows MCA was a mistake and hindsight is always 20/20. While I agree that we have to temper our enthusiasm for IBM's efforts with this history, I believe this is a very different organization that's learned a lot in the last 15 years.
I'm fairly sure there aren't many users on my local loop - I'm always seeing the max allowed upload speed and often get the max or close to it while downloading. My parents, who have more users on their node, see lower speeds, but not 56K-modem speeds.
People are already distracted in the same way while listening to Howard Stern in the morning on the way to work. Especially lately. He's had some great material lately! Anyone hear the show with those 2 girls who...:)
A number of the Japanese automakers have partnerships with US makers (like Mitsu & Chrysler). Mitsubishi no longer offers a turbocharged version, nor an AWD version, of the Eclipse, which it did until recently. Why? Partly because (I believe) it directly competed with the sporty 2-doors Chrysler built or even shared with Mitsu but didn't offer the high-end goodies. They offered rebadged Eclipses as Eagle Talons, complete with turbo and AWD, but once Eagle was dropped from the landscape the Eclipses got weaker. Why they wouldn't offer the hi-po Eclipse as a Dodge model is beyond me.
Does Mitsu still make the 3000 GT VR4, or a descendant thereof, and offer it in Japan? Axed in the US in 1997. Maybe it was too close in performance, and way cheaper than, a Viper?
As for your general question of capping the HP, probably insurance, but maybe EPA as well? A small difference in a car makes a big difference in insurance. When I went to insure my Dakota, they asked if it was an R/T or not. No huge HP difference (15 ponies) but jsut the "image" is enough to increase insurance rates.
RC5-64 started 3 1/2 years ago. In that time, more people have joined and computers have gotten much, much more powerful. Even if the number of participants remains steady and 100% of the keyspace has to be searched, the second half will take less than 3 1/2 years.
Make your filesystem code as fast as you want it, you still have to deal with the speed of the physical device. Aside from "cache the whole disk in RAM," isn't there a limit to how fast a FS can get, because of the drive? Aren't we really just trying to find out who can write the best drive caching algorithm?
The latest Hennessey project viper will hang with this bike. Not even fully dialed-in and tuned, on a bad day (weather-wise), they turned 9.9 in the 1/4 and 0-60 in 2.43 seconds.
If you can crunch the system down small enough, it'll fit, along with the various cables & accessories, into a reasonably-sized backpack. Then you can carry it while carrying your monitor, and only have to lug around two things (backpack & monitor).
I bought my TV in July '99 here in the US and it has a V-Chip in it (I haven't figured out how to use it, nor do I intend to). The big news here isn't that the V-Chip is in TVs - it's that the TV stations are sending the signals needed to fully use it.
Local primaries were supposed to be today, but cancelled due to the incidents.
It's running fine with 1.4b2 for me.

There's no mention of any customer at all. Are we taking potshots at MS for absolutely no reason now? There's no connection here at all.

Well, they could just stop selling 9x/ME and let everyone move to 2000. Same effect.

The group doesn't "resemble their own" and that makes it more entertaining and an escape from reality.
When, exactly, did he have time to drink?

RC5-64 is safe today. But maybe not tomorrow.

Comparable price, as well.
Offer them on a CD for the price of shipping & handling. They've been doing that with IE for years.
They had to call Novell to help them follow a wire into a wall? I have got to get into consulting.
But a rocket isn't a jet

It still taints the survey data itself.
No wonder our educational system is in so much trouble.

If AOL were concerned about "freeloaders" they wouldn't have released AIM for free. No, this is about control.
